Doesn't questions like these only re-enforce stereotyping? Yes, it does, because as long as races are singled out by their color, there will be racism. At 6 or 7, the child is old enough to reflect back & wonder why they were asked to chose between colors. How did that make them feel?
I can't help but wonder if the choices may have been different if the interviewer asking the questions was Black. IMO, I saw several, quite cute, bright children that did not act as though they were withdrawn or unsure of themselves. I thought it was awfully sweet they picked the one they thought their interviewer would be pleased with. Moral of the day, leave the kids alone! Shameful to frame a question, "which is the bad one"? I think this is very very disturbing...as a white person this makes me feel terrible. That I never considered this as even a possibility. It's very heartbreaking to me. When i gave birth to my daughter, my husbands friends arrived at the hospital with gifts. They brought white bay dolls, so i asked "why did you buy white baby dolls?" to which they replied "because they are better looking" lol i threw the dolls in the bin and bought black ones. Black self hatred is mainly down to the media and the racists. You rarely see black girls in commercials about beauty products unless they're light skinned . I have 30% black ancestry and am proud of it. I once dated a black guy who said he didn't want "dark children." If we'd had a kid and they had come out as dark as him, he would have passed on this self hate to them. My nieces and nephews have been raised to be proud black people and would have picked the black doll everytime.

I am Italian and when I was a child I had a black baby doll, even if the only blacks I had seen were the Robinsons on TV.

Maybe if there were popular black dolls,then there would be a viable argument. But it takes a long time to even find a decent looking black doll. There also is the alternative experience, why have the same color doll when you can experience a different color doll? To only like the black dolls would mean they are self centered usually struggle from physical or emotional detachment from whites or other races.

We all know that children's eyes tend to catch brighter colors. You see that with a child early on in life .If you had a dark color truck and a lighter color truck....The child would have pick the brighter truck.. Doesn't questions like these only re-enforce stereotyping? Yes, it does, because as long as races are singled out by their color, there will be racism. At 6 or 7, the child is old enough to reflect back & wonder why they were asked to chose between colors. How did that make them feel?

I can't help but wonder if the choices may have been different if the interviewer asking the questions was Black. IMO, I saw several, quite cute, bright children that did not act as though they were withdrawn or unsure of themselves. I thought it was awfully sweet they picked the one they thought their interviewer would be pleased with. Moral of the day, leave the kids alone! Shameful to frame a question, "which is the bad one"? What did these children take away from this interview?

It would be interesting to see this experiment designed in such a way that the children could in no way be exposed to an interviewer.

But the experiment should be conducted with a Black interviewer as well.. perhaps with a different group of children, just as a test to eliminate all possible bias ;bias regarding race and the subconscious power of suggestion at least.

Racism and racial discrimination are NOT the same thing. EVERYONE is ego/ethnocentric in some way. It just happens that white people had the power to impose their ideas on the world. We only have to look at the corruption of the Panthers or genocide in Africa to see that blacks can ALSO be corrupted by power/money. And the phrase "are racist" is PRESENT tense. And we shouldn't take historical racism out of context -- certain races/countries/people did those things to others, but it isn't as though they were all what we would call white today, or were considered to be white in their time.

My ex (who is pakistani) used to hate his skin and he used to wish he was white but now he is proud. I also know a mixed race (black and white) girl who hates her nose, she wants a more european nose but I told the mum its just because she is young, when she is older she will be proud of her herritage and skin. She is a beautiful girl!

I think this is very very disturbing...as a white person this makes me feel terrible. That I never considered this as even a possibility. It's very heartbreaking to me. Even though I didn't create the system, I feel responsible for being a part of it and what role have I played in this. I think we should all ask ourselves that question. My God...its awful for a little child to feel this way. its about personal responsibility, ask ourselves what change could I make.

You not too far off the mark. Surprising I would agree with you. But you missed a few things. The Black kids need to turn off the TV, Stop reading those Entertainment magazines, and basically pick up a history book and learn of the long proud history of Black people. Instead of spending that money on Goods Blacks need to invest that money and save that money. So yeah Tanio12 you got a point. Less TV more reading about science, math, literature, and Black history.

thing that bothers me is that racial hatred can be found in our very language. Black=evil, white=pure. So what does the evil guy in the movie wear? Black and MAYBE red. What does the good guy wear? Prob. white or a pastel type color. What color is heaven or angle wings? White. What color is hell or fallen angel wings? Black. Its hard to keep this media rubbish from ur kids or urself when the language you speak is doing the damnage as well. Its sad, I dont kno why people think hatred is alright.

When i gave birth to my daughter, my husbands friends arrived at the hospital with gifts. They brought white bay dolls, so i asked "why did you buy white baby dolls?" to which they replied "because they are better looking" lol i threw the dolls in the bin and bought black ones. Recently, my daughter asked me if Jesus was white, to which i replied "who cares", she said "everyone at school says Jesus is a white man" lol oh dear. Raising a black child in Western society aint easy.

Black self hatred is mainly down to the media and the racists. You rarely see black girls in commercials about beauty products unless they're light skinned . I have 30% black ancestry and am proud of it. I once dated a black guy who said he didn't want "dark children." If we'd had a kid and they had come out as dark as him, he would have passed on this self hate to them. My nieces and nephews have been raised to be proud black people and would have picked the black doll everytime.

In my opinion, Vogue and Essence are equally responsible, so is Maybeline and Fashion Fair, because race is no different than class, they're both constructs that serve a very real purpose, and when they are no longer effective, there will be many other to fall on.

I wish there weren't the discomfort factor based on the mistreatment of blacks, though we weren't the only ones, but other groups have made good, despite oppression. Success over oppression builds character and we White people have gotten lazy, feeling so entitled, if not dirt-poor. The other ones the whites of the Dem. Party have tried to control with handouts, eugenics, drugs&weapons will be the most populous before long. We're phasing us out.

This is all very dated. This is 2009 and my white daughter (now 25) loved her black doll best. Why not try this text with children from all racial groups? What about Chinese dolls? And Indian Children? The world we live in aint just black and white. And in answer to the questions below - yes you can buy black dolls in shops - just as you can buy dolls that look Chinese and most mothers today surely buy their children (boys and girls?) dolls of a range of colours.
