This guy did not have to stoop so low as to break someones leg, crosscheck, elbow, or run people over to win. All those things were done to him by those who considered themselves hockey players, but actually would not have the right or the worth to carry his gear.
However the Russians did win the "Big One" in 79, with out him or Tret, which i guess proves that the rest of them were no slouches either. N/A's could only dream of such talent, & continue to pulverize, if you call that hockey....

Sometimes it's easier to get blindfolded and point the man at your right for your errors.
I am aware that because of the choice piece of land the U.S. has it is so good that everyone can get a taster and be happy. But once the happiness goes away, what then? I am aware of this, I am aware that govt. is Human, run by Humans and that the ink on paper is just what it is.
You can defend capitalism, you can defend your ideals, but be careful not to contradict yourself in words or actions. This is inevitably what will happen to a flawed logic and ot a person trying to be right at any cost, even the one of truth.
Laugh, laugh, you are still a sheep and act on demand and enjoy doing it. But, do not get any excuses for you, nor for your peers; bad actions are still just as bad when one is advised to do them. Be careful not to be led into a wall.
@Stevenbadman Kharlamov didn't have a broken ankle, he never missed a damned shift in that game and played in game 8. It was all propoganda that came up when he was being benched for poor play in the games in Europe (including those played between games 4 and 5 in the series) Look it up, he was out there on the powerplay from the Clarke slash even.
@Stevenbadman Thanks you for the kind words. Moreover, in Russia's national team no one wears #17 in respect of Kharlamov, although it was never officially retired.
Never preferred any player in any time and still believ he's the greatest or at least your favorite?
I know how magical where these Players; some 15-20 years before their time for sure! I usually see old replays as boring or easy pieces, but I have to recognize the Soviet team showed me somethign I didn't expected and thsi is why I state them to have been better than their time.
What an incredible talent! I remember the Summit Series in 1972 and everybody was in awe of Kharlamov. Too bad Bobby Clarke had to bust his ankle because Valeri was unbelievable.
Yes, he died in a car crash in 1981 after the coach Tikhonov didn't let him go to play in the Canadian Cup. That's why our team crushed team Canada in the finals. That victory was dedicated to Valeri Kharlamov.
Not so sure about that. Kharlamov played in a league that played half the amount of games that the NHL did and although his best season in the RSL he averaged 1.25 goals a game (that would bring him to 102 in a 82 game schedule) he did that in 1971, while Gretzky hit his 92 goals in 1982. By that time the NHL had adapted parts of the European game and it's safe to say that it was much harder to play 80 games in the NHL than to play 34 in the RSL. Also, imagine if Orr was shutting him down in 72.
You conveniently (or unknowingly) forget that top Soviet hockey players also played games for the National team, participated in in European cup competitions, national cup and friendly games. This will bring the total number of games played per season to about 80 as well.
Well, Orr was there in the 1974 series, that didn't help, USSR won the series. So, stop making lame excuses. :)
I guess I overlooked the Orr part. But friendly games and games being played against the other European nations would not nearly be on the same level as an nhl game. The style of play in the 60-70's in Russia was also much different than that of the 80's North American game. By that time the european influence was beginning to show and it was, arguably, a much harder league to play in.
Oh, please, nobody gives a shit about that loss in 1980, besides the americans for whom it's their only achievement in hockey. It was a one time fluke that can happen to anyone. Example: Belarus vs Sweden in 2002 olympics.
If you're going to use the Bobby Orr excuse, may I remind you that Kharlamov didn't play in 1976 after being involved in a car accident and in 1972 it was Clarke's cheapshot that gave Canada the eventual victory.
1974, 1979, 1981, 2006, 2008... You get the idea :)
We beat Canada more times than we lost to them in all competitions, period. Canada has and always had a lot of talented individual players but it's a team sport and as a team Canada found itself on a losing side many-many times against USSR and Russia.
i suggest you smarten up. now since ive basically tore you a new one with the fact that you said bobby orr played in 74 which he didnt. but when he played he beat you.
and good for you you beat us so many times. i go back to the fact that the usa beat russia. big upset when they are college kids of lesser talent and basically rookies compared to the great soviets. keep going back and forth you obviously are a homer.
i go back to the junior level of hockey btw 5 strait years in a row of gold medals. thats team work for you especially this year when our team wasnt even that good ;) you guys have great players they just arent the best. (now 60's- 1980 you guys had the best and it would have been great to see in the nhl)
"you guys have great players they just aren't the best." Hmm, have you checked the stats on the two leading scorers in the NHL? Their names are Malkin and Ovechkin. 'Nuff said.
so are you talking about the best or top 20? Are you talking about now or the past? You can claim the second strings, no problems there.
By the way, here is the top 10 scorers as of now: 1. Malkin, 2. Ovechkin, 3. Crosby, 4. Datsyuk, 5. Parise, 6. Getzlaf, 7. Kovalchuk, 8. Iginla, 9. Thornton, 10. Backstrom. 4 Russians, 4 Canadians, 1 American, 1 Swede. Would you rather have 1, 2, 4 and 7 (Russians) or 3, 6, 8 and 9 (Canadians). ' Nuff said. Boo-yeah.
Only issue is that the hall was set up by canadians for canadians. Harlamov was indited as an exception. By the way, you won't find a canadian in russian hall of fame. :)
lol? irrelevant? i was replying to the leadership comment... something about there not being a russian captain to win the stanley cup... your reply doesn't have anything to do with the names that i wrote as i was talking about current players. MM and SY were NHL legends and deserve their respect... however, there were many soviet players that do also... you're strange.
One European Captain wrote his name last year and he was the first one.
But, it's not really fair as soviet players simply couldn't play in the NHL, at least legally as Soviet citizen.
To have saw many things aroudn the 70s and 80s, I have to admit nothing can be compared to the Soviet team. No player of that time could pretend to be better than the soviets' champion or best player if you prefer.
The IIHF's century team isn't the Hockey team of the century, it's the INTERNATIONAL ICE HOCKEY FEDERATIONS ice hockey team. Meaning these players were ranked the best players to play internationally.
WIll be cool to see USA win the olympics again, or better yet, have a player that is top 20 in the world material... Russians are taught to play strategic hockey (to this day), the physicality of north american hockey requires more pump-pep-talk type of leadership. Whether it's the lack of language skills or team enthusiasm, russians, much like other european players lead by example... google alexander ovechkin, evgeni malkin, pavel datsyuk, ilya kovalchuk.. see what comes up and then reply...
Once again, I don't care about the 1980 game against USA. We beat them so many times before and after, it's boring. But it's typical of americans to make a giant triumph out of nothing, so they cherish this lonely victory as the Ark of Covenant. And you, being from North America, are obviously affected by this hollow noise and a cheesy movie with Kurt Russell.
acutllay im not. youre just acting as if the russian teams were invincible which they were not. and since a COLLEGE TEAM BASICALLY beat a team of great veterans it is a big deal. you still lost you didnt get gold and it will live in the history books as the bigest upset in sports history.
being from canada i know good hockey and love the sport.
also i seem to remember stating 5 gold medals in a row at the world juniors. we own that tournament and your country in it. please keep remembering those 7 gold medals tthat could have been 8 if not for an american team made up of college players.
Just like last year you won it, ha? After the tournament start was postponed at your request, everyone was ready to celebrate a Canadian gold... except the Russians :)
No worry, we'll bring the 8th gold from Vancouver :-þ
its because we are the best:) haha in all seriousness i cant wait it should be a good showing between the russians the usa ( who i think will have a better team then people will give them credit for) and of course canada.
im hoping to see filatov play hes something to watch, a buddy of mine from juniors is played with him on the syracuse crunch, said he was just insane.
it was fun man i got to go back to work now though power skating class showed up.
yeh, right, college team... all of those collegers were not allowed to play in NHL for an year just to participate in Olympics. Right after the game all of them except for 2 started their professional careers. Also few people remember that USSR team had internal problems itself at that time.
@mitya Actually when it's been Canada's best players vs Russia's best players in 72, 76, 81, 84, 87, 91, 96, 98, 02,04,06,10 Canada has won gold 8 times, USA 1, Czech 1, Sweden 1 and Russia 1. It's pretty obvious who the best is..
@RigaFraction -Hey man, you conveniently left out the most memorable series of them ALL!!
It was tagged the "Series of The Century"....Just take a second & see if you can remember..OK take a little longer.
OK, back in 1979, the NHL & the USSR held a 3 game series in NY,(first odd # series between them). The NHL shut down for 2 wks, had the pick of the whole world, & used that privilege to use 2 Swedes& top N/A's.
after splitting 1&2, the Russians were 6-0 WINNERS OF GAME 3, with no "K" or "T"!
No, as far as I know. When Kovalchuk played for Russian team in 2008, he had number 71, but only because someone else already had 17, not because Kharlamov's number is retired.
In fact, great playmakers like Gretzky, Lemieux, and Oates appeared in the NHL after the series with the USSR showed them how limited dump and chase hockey is. Before, there were plenty of scorers, such as Esposito, Richard, Bossy, etc., but very few playmakers on the level of Soviet players.
my idol and one of my heroes..If i were a player i would be like him 25+30-55 goals.17 assists.1 mjs and 152 pims.and as famous line kortelainen-lehto-tuominen < who was some sort of petrov-harlamov-mihailov
Howe was amazing, Gretzkey was unreal, and Lemieux was just plain sick, but no one in the history of any sport anywhere anytime could fill you with that feeling you got when you watch Bure fly down the wing, cuz you know something is happening, he is one of the best players in history and i hate that not many people feel the same way!
What about a good ol Canadian boy like Lindros, are you saying his many concussion problems just like Moginly's many back problems aren't to blame for their lack of production in their later years?
and sure, talk about Bure being a bad apple.
sorry, they don't give you a nickname matching Maurice Richard in hockey for nothing.
Last time i checked Federov has more playoff points then Gordie Howe, does that mean good ol' Mr. Hockey tries less in the playoffs, has less heart then Federov?
Moginly has had a horrible back for the last god know how many years. I'm guessing much like Ed Belfour, but goalies don't get hit. on top of that, Belfour hasn't "stopped trying" has he now? now that he's so old? just like Moginly?
I'm Canadian, I 've always hated what Clarke did to Kharlamov. It really took a lot of the joy out of the series for me. I think Canada was shirt a lot of great tallent though. If they had Bobby Orr, it would have been a lot different.
j ferguson sr ordered him to . it was such a despical act that showed the mindset of people like ferguson. rather than have artists painting a beautiful pic on the ice bring thugs to spill blood on it.. no wonder so many russians are superior hockey players.
true, there are many great russian hockey players, but look at the Canada vs Russia Jr tourny. Canada is up 4-0. And name one russian NHL superstar that plays with heart like Yzerman, Orr, Howe, Sakic? they have talent, but many string together some 100 pt seasons, make big money and then stop trying like P.Bure, Mogilny, Federov, Krutov, just to name a few bad apples.
Maybe it's because they got to NHL for money? NHL is a Canadian/American league, Russians don't grow up with Stanley cup dreams. You won't find many great foreigners in the superleague either.
As for russian superstars, how about Bobrov, Kharmlamov, Mikhailov, Petrov, Bykov, Khomutov, KLM, Fetisov, just to name a few.
That's a good point about growing up with out the Stanley cup as their main dream. All I was saying about Bure was hw was all about himself and his numbers. He screwed Vancouver over and was not a team player. Unlike Kharmlamov who played with lots of heart for his country. Bure was into other things on the side and turned into a prima dona.
I think Kharlamov was better than Gretzky, the fact that Kharlamov didnt play in the NHL doesnt mean he wasnt great,Kharlamov was just fu*^ing awesome!!!
This guy did not have to stoop so low as to break someones leg, crosscheck, elbow, or run people over to win. All those things were done to him by those who considered themselves hockey players, but actually would not have the right or the worth to carry his gear.

Humans are Humans I guess.
I am aware that because of the choice piece of land the U.S. has it is so good that everyone can get a taster and be happy. But once the happiness goes away, what then? I am aware of this, I am aware that govt. is Human, run by Humans and that the ink on paper is just what it is.
My eyes are open.

I know how magical where these Players; some 15-20 years before their time for sure! I usually see old replays as boring or easy pieces, but I have to recognize the Soviet team showed me somethign I didn't expected and thsi is why I state them to have been better than their time.

Yes, he died in a car crash in 1981 after the coach Tikhonov didn't let him go to play in the Canadian Cup. That's why our team crushed team Canada in the finals. That victory was dedicated to Valeri Kharlamov.
kharlamov1979 3 years ago 3
Gretzky who?
If Kharlamov had been able to play the same amount as Gretzky in the NHL, Gretzky would definitely not be called the great one.
Just look at this guy.
AftComet 3 years ago 4
Not so sure about that. Kharlamov played in a league that played half the amount of games that the NHL did and although his best season in the RSL he averaged 1.25 goals a game (that would bring him to 102 in a 82 game schedule) he did that in 1971, while Gretzky hit his 92 goals in 1982. By that time the NHL had adapted parts of the European game and it's safe to say that it was much harder to play 80 games in the NHL than to play 34 in the RSL. Also, imagine if Orr was shutting him down in 72.
moosetricks 3 years ago
You conveniently (or unknowingly) forget that top Soviet hockey players also played games for the National team, participated in in European cup competitions, national cup and friendly games. This will bring the total number of games played per season to about 80 as well.
Well, Orr was there in the 1974 series, that didn't help, USSR won the series. So, stop making lame excuses. :)
mitya 2 years ago
I guess I overlooked the Orr part. But friendly games and games being played against the other European nations would not nearly be on the same level as an nhl game. The style of play in the 60-70's in Russia was also much different than that of the 80's North American game. By that time the european influence was beginning to show and it was, arguably, a much harder league to play in.
moosetricks 2 years ago
actually bobby orr didnt play in 74 he played in the 76 canada cup.
gordie howe bobby hull and mark howe played in the 74 series.
when orr played who won again?
yes the soviets were a great team, but you lost to canada in 72, and 76, and the usa in 1980.
canadianhockey1924 2 years ago
Oh, please, nobody gives a shit about that loss in 1980, besides the americans for whom it's their only achievement in hockey. It was a one time fluke that can happen to anyone. Example: Belarus vs Sweden in 2002 olympics.
If you're going to use the Bobby Orr excuse, may I remind you that Kharlamov didn't play in 1976 after being involved in a car accident and in 1972 it was Clarke's cheapshot that gave Canada the eventual victory.
1974, 1979, 1981, 2006, 2008... You get the idea :)
mitya 2 years ago
buddy you still lost to canada twice, and the usa once so stop making excuses.
i never used the bobby orr excusei simply correct your idiocy.
canadianhockey1924 2 years ago
We beat Canada more times than we lost to them in all competitions, period. Canada has and always had a lot of talented individual players but it's a team sport and as a team Canada found itself on a losing side many-many times against USSR and Russia.
mitya 2 years ago
i suggest you smarten up. now since ive basically tore you a new one with the fact that you said bobby orr played in 74 which he didnt. but when he played he beat you.
and good for you you beat us so many times. i go back to the fact that the usa beat russia. big upset when they are college kids of lesser talent and basically rookies compared to the great soviets. keep going back and forth you obviously are a homer.
canadianhockey1924 2 years ago
i go back to the junior level of hockey btw 5 strait years in a row of gold medals. thats team work for you especially this year when our team wasnt even that good ;) you guys have great players they just arent the best. (now 60's- 1980 you guys had the best and it would have been great to see in the nhl)
canadianhockey1924 2 years ago
"you guys have great players they just aren't the best." Hmm, have you checked the stats on the two leading scorers in the NHL? Their names are Malkin and Ovechkin. 'Nuff said.
KrakovskySF 2 years ago
have you checked the most names in the top 20? canadians enough said.
have you checked most names in the hall? canadians from the nhl enough said.
canadianhockey1924 2 years ago
so are you talking about the best or top 20? Are you talking about now or the past? You can claim the second strings, no problems there.
By the way, here is the top 10 scorers as of now: 1. Malkin, 2. Ovechkin, 3. Crosby, 4. Datsyuk, 5. Parise, 6. Getzlaf, 7. Kovalchuk, 8. Iginla, 9. Thornton, 10. Backstrom. 4 Russians, 4 Canadians, 1 American, 1 Swede. Would you rather have 1, 2, 4 and 7 (Russians) or 3, 6, 8 and 9 (Canadians). ' Nuff said. Boo-yeah.

I am from Canada, north of the USA. Google Mark Messier or Steve Yzerman.
patcharlesboyd 2 years ago
lol? irrelevant? i was replying to the leadership comment... something about there not being a russian captain to win the stanley cup... your reply doesn't have anything to do with the names that i wrote as i was talking about current players. MM and SY were NHL legends and deserve their respect... however, there were many soviet players that do also... you're strange.
Phomiak 2 years ago
One European Captain wrote his name last year and he was the first one.
But, it's not really fair as soviet players simply couldn't play in the NHL, at least legally as Soviet citizen.
To have saw many things aroudn the 70s and 80s, I have to admit nothing can be compared to the Soviet team. No player of that time could pretend to be better than the soviets' champion or best player if you prefer.
They were faster, and way better skaters.
GueorguiJoukov 2 years ago

Phomiak 2 years ago
so it was a fluke that you guys had kharlamov in 80 and still lost to a bunch of college kids?
they out played you plane and simple. stop making excuses for losses.
world juniors this year canada again? you get the picture :)
canadianhockey1924 2 years ago
Once again, I don't care about the 1980 game against USA. We beat them so many times before and after, it's boring. But it's typical of americans to make a giant triumph out of nothing, so they cherish this lonely victory as the Ark of Covenant. And you, being from North America, are obviously affected by this hollow noise and a cheesy movie with Kurt Russell.
mitya 2 years ago
acutllay im not. youre just acting as if the russian teams were invincible which they were not. and since a COLLEGE TEAM BASICALLY beat a team of great veterans it is a big deal. you still lost you didnt get gold and it will live in the history books as the bigest upset in sports history.
being from canada i know good hockey and love the sport.
canadianhockey1924 2 years ago
This argument is getting silly. You choose to remember our loss in 1980 and I choose to remember 7 olympic gold medals.
Let's talk after Russia - Canada game next year in Vancouver, OK?
mitya 2 years ago
we dont need to were going to win :)
also i seem to remember stating 5 gold medals in a row at the world juniors. we own that tournament and your country in it. please keep remembering those 7 gold medals tthat could have been 8 if not for an american team made up of college players.
canadianhockey1924 2 years ago
Oh, really? :)

@mitya Actually when it's been Canada's best players vs Russia's best players in 72, 76, 81, 84, 87, 91, 96, 98, 02,04,06,10 Canada has won gold 8 times, USA 1, Czech 1, Sweden 1 and Russia 1. It's pretty obvious who the best is..
RigaFraction 1 year ago
@RigaFraction -Hey man, you conveniently left out the most memorable series of them ALL!!
It was tagged the "Series of The Century"....Just take a second & see if you can remember..OK take a little longer.
OK, back in 1979, the NHL & the USSR held a 3 game series in NY,(first odd # series between them). The NHL shut down for 2 wks, had the pick of the whole world, & used that privilege to use 2 Swedes& top N/A's.
after splitting 1&2, the Russians were 6-0 WINNERS OF GAME 3, with no "K" or "T"!

Chunkmonstar 4 years ago
P.Bure, Mogilny, Federov, stopped trying?
Last time i checked Federov has more playoff points then Gordie Howe, does that mean good ol' Mr. Hockey tries less in the playoffs, has less heart then Federov?
Moginly has had a horrible back for the last god know how many years. I'm guessing much like Ed Belfour, but goalies don't get hit. on top of that, Belfour hasn't "stopped trying" has he now? now that he's so old? just like Moginly?
Chunkmonstar 4 years ago
I'm Canadian, I 've always hated what Clarke did to Kharlamov. It really took a lot of the joy out of the series for me. I think Canada was shirt a lot of great tallent though. If they had Bobby Orr, it would have been a lot different.
mryentafo 4 years ago
j ferguson sr ordered him to . it was such a despical act that showed the mindset of people like ferguson. rather than have artists painting a beautiful pic on the ice bring thugs to spill blood on it.. no wonder so many russians are superior hockey players.
oehieze 4 years ago
true, there are many great russian hockey players, but look at the Canada vs Russia Jr tourny. Canada is up 4-0. And name one russian NHL superstar that plays with heart like Yzerman, Orr, Howe, Sakic? they have talent, but many string together some 100 pt seasons, make big money and then stop trying like P.Bure, Mogilny, Federov, Krutov, just to name a few bad apples.
mryentafo 4 years ago
Maybe it's because they got to NHL for money? NHL is a Canadian/American league, Russians don't grow up with Stanley cup dreams. You won't find many great foreigners in the superleague either.
As for russian superstars, how about Bobrov, Kharmlamov, Mikhailov, Petrov, Bykov, Khomutov, KLM, Fetisov, just to name a few.
Mintos77 4 years ago
That's a good point about growing up with out the Stanley cup as their main dream. All I was saying about Bure was hw was all about himself and his numbers. He screwed Vancouver over and was not a team player. Unlike Kharmlamov who played with lots of heart for his country. Bure was into other things on the side and turned into a prima dona.
