Oh, and I thought I'd tell you. I don't think doctors actually take the Hippocratic Oath. They refer to it in medical school, but they don't actually take it.
We had to call the vet once to help a goat give birth. In was in the middle of the night, and he arrived drunk! We didn't realize it at the time, of course. We wanted to press charges, but we had no proof. He treated our goat terribly, and she and the baby both died. As he was driving away he nearly drove into a phone pole. It's so hard to find a vet that actually cares about animals.
omg yeah they do cover their butts. I just fired my family dr because of bull crap. As for vet's My parents vet Dr Noonan was awesome when our cat sandy went into seizures and then cardiac arrest after getting a clean bill of health 2 weeks before this... he did and autopsy without charging us a penny. we found out that someone had put rat poison out in cat food. He was 14 yrs old and very friendly. He died when I was 16 and i still miss him to this day
My cat scratched my vet because she was handling him roughly. She told me that he had to stay over night. When i came to pick him up, his claws were missing and his paws were covered in dry blood. It was her fault that he scratched her and I was pretty sure that ripping out my cats claws was unnecessary.
@MyBrEatsCats ... Are you serious???? I would sue that horrible vet! Not only is it unethical, it's ILLEGAL. You did NOT give them permission to do a declaw on your cat!!
I'm so glad I live in the UK. I didn't know they did these things. Its especially scary about the medical insurance and changing what people say... the British NHS, slow though it may be, is a wonderful thing
wow! I am a vet's assistant. that is so bad they sent u that letter. no matter what, your not supposed to do that....u stick to the truth and try ur best to find a nice medium with everyone. I have never seen a vet office change wat a client says and I hope I never do. thanx for the warning! didnt know! that vet clinic is unprofessional and shouldn't be open. I hope u find or have found a good vet! :)
You're right. You're very lucky. My response to your other comment will shed some more light on our vet problems. But the cats are now well cared for.
wow watching these videos really makes me have to thank that we actually have a good vet that does well wit hall animals and theres more than one in town but i personly have only been to one of them. but my dog had a cracked tooth and the vet we were at didnt notice it untill it got really bad and he didnt want to move but yeah long story we moved to a diffrent vet and hes great with all animals, i bring my dog, and my friend has many smaller pets that she brings them to and there great to yeah
Kitty is great! =^.^= He just has to stay on prescription food. And the food actually helped the other cat too! There's obviously something to be said about what they're selling on the shelves. Something's not right.
This is so sad, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that :( .. I've had a vet who threw (literally tossed) my cat onto his desk while he was still under anesthetic from being neutered .. He also preformed the the operation with other animals blood on his hands. It's horrible home some of these people try to pass as 'vets'. I hope your new vet is excellent and Whiskers is doing well :)
i love animals n the samethings happend 2 me with my vets mostly with small animals though i lost alot ov rabbits and guinia pigs becus they didnt know what they were doing
No one said anything about fun. It was incompetence. And it's well-documented, and we've now discovered the same situations to have happened all over town, with this same vet.
We have a nurse around here too. She's said the same thing. She also mentioned the people who only speak Spanish, and can't tell anyone about life-threatening allergies. I had never thought of that before. It seems we have all kinds of "people problems".
When I used to work at the hospital I heard my colleagues making fun of patients in the nurses station. They also would not answer call bells promptly. They would wait for a code blue to go off from the machine rather than go into the room. And so on...
Once you go to school for nursing (where there is no room for mistake), and then get into regular nursing, its totally different. When I was a student we were watched like hawks, and then after school it was the complete opposite. Unfortunately, I have fallen ill two times since I stopped working there and had to stay at that hospital.
OMG! I'm shocked about the code blues! They should not have been working there!
I've had knee surgery and stayed at a small hospital because Blue Cross was refusing to cover the big one here. But I got much better care at the small hospital! I was treated like a person instead of a number.
you accused the vet of killing your animals - and then get pissed when they wanna stop seeing you. they documented verbatim what you said, if you don't remember, perhaps you were on pills and blacked out. there is no need for transcription or medical knowledge here. sounds like you flipped out and got called on it - you didn't like that. a record is a legal document - if you challenge what they said - sue them - or just get over it.
3 pets dead after 3 vet visits - well, they were obviously ill to begin with, otherwise you wouldn't have sought help. perhaps the treatment was correct but you were too late seeking it?
Recently, I've had trouble with my own doctor. I've got alot of med probs, but alot of em i've been complaining about for ages. but my doc never really takes care of them properly, so they stick around. It's been ticking me off for some time. Recently, I got a copy of my med records, for a SSDI ap and i saw the comments that the doc wrote. she put certain phrases in quotes of things I said. things that make me look like a total arse, like i'm either a hypochondriac, or am causing my own problems
this has caused me to no only be denied SSDI, but has also made me just feel like dirt. I now want to change my dr. i mean, she says one thing to me, writes another thing in my files, and never truly addresses my issues with any seriousness. I used to love her, but was just irritated that she was always super busy and late. Now i don't even wanna see her at all. I want to change doctors. I'm just both furious and hurt at how they can get away with these things. :(
My current doctor almost kept me from getting coverage from my insurance, because of the way he worded what I supposedly said. And once it's on record, they can't change it. Thankfully, he was able to just add to what he had previously written, and repaired the damage. Thank God!
Holy cow! Guess we have to hand around and listen to what the doc records after every visit that will be typed into our files!!! EVERYTHING is set up to protect the docs and the ins. company--never the consumer.
I was thinking about this situation again last night, trying to figure out a way to never let it happen again. I think that in the future, anything I have to say to our vet about a pet's treatment, or even a death by natural causes, I'm going to put in writing, and hand-deliver it to them. If I had an e-mail address for our old vet, I'd send them a link to this video! They just built a huge new building! That turns my stomach.
Lisa, as far as my research can tell me, vets do not have to take the hypocratic oath. They have to of course carry out their work responsibly, they can't for example dilute a medicine with water because the stocks are low or anything, but the hypocratic oath is taken by doctors and nurses, and vets do not have to take it as far as I can work out.
Thanks =) But actually, someone here found the oath that vets have to take. If I had gotten copies of my file in the past, I can see where I'd have grounds for legal action. But it's all in the past. I like the vets that treated Whiskers. But I still need to find out if they can treat my guinea pig.
Oh OK cool, well I hope you find a suitable alternative. Don't forget that YOU are giving THEM work - if you're not happy with who is looking after your pets, you are perfectly entitled to look elsewhere, so you can get one that you're comfortable with. If you find the phone number of the vets that treated Whiskers, give them a quick call and even the receptionist should know whether they deal with guinea pigs. Good luck Lisa :)
I'll just ask them when I go back. Since he now has to eat prescription food, we have to buy it from a vet. So far, I have no reason not to trust them. But, from now on, I'm going to ask for copies of every single page in my file!
When you find a vet you're comfortable with you won't need to, but if in any doubt, everyone should do it. It would be interesting if we had any vets on here, to hear what they have to say about note altering, but I don't suppose they will ever into a discussion about it.
Quite a few years ago I had the opportunity to actually read my own medical chart. You would not believe how much was inaccurate & the things they attributed me saying. I took the chart back to my doc & said we were going to make some corrections--she did. I don't know WHO the heck she was talking to, but it was not me!!
I've caught discrepancies in my own medical chart, when my doctor has left the room with it open beside me ;) And, one time I had to fight with my insurance company because of the comments my doctor said I made, which he just paraphrased, but in doing so, he wrote what caused the insurance to not want to pay. We eventually got it straightened out, by having him add a memo. But once the info has been sent to the ins company, the doc can't change it!
The following oath was accepted in 1969 by the American Veterinary Medical Association:
"Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine,I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of livestock resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.
Thank you! Of all these comments you're the only one to know this. I have no intention now, of pressing any charges. The only time I was really convinced that the vet was specifically negligent was with Piglet, about 10-11 years ago, since he died the next day. With the second guinea pig and the rabbit, they obviously didn't know what they were doing. I suppose if I wanted to sue, it's the falsification of what I supposedly said, that I could use against them. But I couldn't prove it.
when I bought my gpigs from a pet store, one of the two had a URI. I took them both back.. They said the one was fine and the other they kept to treat. 5 days later they called me and told me to take him home.. 10 days is the norm. less than a week later, my little Bullet died. I took my remaining gpig to the vet. I was lucky the vet we take our dog too had a vet that specialized in small animals. She was excellent. I did a ton of research on what meds were acceptable for pigs. She was amazing.
I'm sorry about Bullet =( But I'm happy to hear good news about your vet! Where did you find out about pig medicines. I think I tried searching online in the past, but I came up with nothing.
I have a friend who raises gpigs. She gave me link to a web site with excellent info. If you like, I'll see if she can find the link. I had meds that would kill gpigs, etc. Along with a list of common gpig diseases.
I can say with great certainty, that the majority of vets I have met - even the ones that work with exotics at my place of employ - don't always know what they're doing. I've had a tortoise that was given an overdose by a vet. I've had animals at work that were neglected when they were in critical condition. Just because you have some letters behind your name, doesn't make you all-knowing. But a lot of folks with letters behind their name sure do think they are :(
During the brief time I spent temping at doctors' offices in the lat 90s, I quickly clued in that MD's were typically very indifferent to their patients. Anyone who actually cared appeared to be the exception, not the rule.
I'm hearing a lot of stories like that now. It's really sad. I'm just happy we had the money. That vet wouldn't touch him until we paid, and his bladder was the size of a grapefruit before they inserted the catheter!
I had a golden retriever that started limping. I took him to the vet, and he accused me of feeding him too much because he had gained 6 pounds, and they sent me home with expensive prescription diet food. The vet wouldn't even do the x-ray I asked for. Well, I found out from a different vet that the weight gain turned out to be from a huge tumor, and he died. I was beyond angry! I changed vets, and I've never looked back!
OMG! I definitely would have sued that vet! AND I would have blogged it, vlogged it, told it, you name it. When I've been wronged like that, I make sure everyone knows, for their own sake, and for the safety of their pets.
I called a lwayer, and I was told that suing someone for veterinary malpractice is not a winning case. I called three lawyers in my state, and they all said the same thing. Unless the dog was a source of income, it's considered nothing more than property. To blog and vlog about it with the name of the vet could result in ME being sued for liable or slander if it actually put any kind of dent in his business.
I can think of 2 ways around that. ;) 1) You sue for pain and suffering... you were depressed and it hindered your relationships due to your grief. 2) You could do a "news report" vlog and use the word "allegedly" every time you mentioned their name. That's how the news reporters can do it without getting sued. ;)
The pain and suffereing thing woulnd't hold water because the dog had a legal value of property. The law won't recognize pain and suffering for a dog. They won't; I checked... Not in this state anyway. One lawyer was totally, "I get your pain; I've had dogs... But it won't work." I switched my vet, so they don't have my business. They got into a tiny, little "trouble" over the non-compliance of sending COMPLETE records to the new vet for my other pets. It was something.
Well, viral videos can carry a lot of weight. Just use "allegedly" every time you mention the vet's name. But that's just what I would do. I would say the name over and over again, and I would blog about it on every blog network I could find. Oh! I once saw a truck in my area, that had signs and writing all over it, about a company in town that had wronged them in some way!
I can look into the laws in my state with regard to this. Most of the people at that clinic there were very rude to me, and I want to be sure they can't do anything against me before I write or record anything negative about them. Thanks for the encouragement!
LoL...still, I think my attitude would be a match for you if ya caught me on the wrong day. I hate when I get like that. But Idunno...I have never seen you on a bad day...maybe you should make a video on that? LoL. Ah, maybe not. Haha.
I think I'll pass on that video =/ Actually, I think there are a couple of rant videos on here when I was ticked off about something. It's just never a good idea with me.
Glad to hear your kitty is home and feeling better. I've been pretty lucky with vets. Mine is far more expensive than I'd like (aren't they all!) but at least I have a lot of confidence in him, and that's worth a lot. My main near horror story is I took Babs in for a dental and declined the extra pre-anesthesia bloodwork. They wrote "dec" on her chart because I'd declined the bloodwork. (All this was the day before the dental) So I take her in the next morning for the actual dental, Cont.
and the woman behind the counter takes a look at some paperwork and says "OK, so you're here to have Bab's declawed this morning I see". I made it pretty clear that that was NOT the case!!! It's pretty much the most upset I've ever been at the vet's office. She of course had mis-read the "Dec" and thought it was an abbreviation for Declaw. Grrrrr. I was almost afraid to leave her there, but they assured me they weren't going to declaw her. Cont.
Yikes. Both of mine are declawed, but it's a county regulation that they can't be outside anyway. It's to keep the feral cat population under control, and to prevent feline leukemia. But I would have a cow if they made a mistake like that. Although human doctors do it all the time!
I'm an obstetrical nurse. I don't know anything about veterinary medicine. I have heard the docs doing the transcription thing into tape recorders and into the phone. What happens with it after that, I don't know...I've never worked for an office. Is it possible the note was about someone else and got put in your file? If this vet ticked off a lot of people... Plus if it was just a note from the person who answered the phones it would be the same as something entered into the actual chart.
They definitely altered my chart. And it was obviously intentional. One of the ladies that works there is someone I've known for years. When the 1st girl told me what it said, I asked to speak to the lady I know. I assumed she would know me better than that. But even she covered for the vets. That just makes me assume they've been sued before. I'm glad to be done with them. They probably would have killed Whiskers in this emergency. But he's SO much better now! =)
I'm probably not the best person to ask about this topic. I feel as though everything I chart is to cover my rear in this sue happy society. I don't lie, I just have to really make sure how I word things...thinking about how it would be viewed in court. If a doctor or nurse is deliberately unethical or negligent, definitely they should be called on it. But it seems everyone who doesn't have the exact experience they wanted threatens to sue.
I'm honestly not sure about vets and the hippocratic oath. It's my understanding that for doctors it is largely ceremonial and not even obligatory. Veterinarians and doctors would still be bound by the ethics of their state boards and any ethics set by legal precidents or found by jury in court.
It's especially cool when a cat loves you that much, cos they're fussy and much more picky than dogs ;)
It probably was best you left that vet considering your experiences there, but if they'll lie about what you said to them, I imagine there are a lot more lies in their practice. Scary.
Report the sucker to the Vet Board. You were right, I should not have watched this. I agree with you, but I get so passionate and upset that I want to go yell at them.
It's been over a year now. And I didn't know there was a vet board. Do they have to give me my entire chart if I ask for it, or would it have to be subpoena'd?
i knew someone that had a dog that the vet said would not live another week and wanted to put it down. they refused and the dog lived for like 4 more years .
I think we should ask questions and get 2nd opinions on our pets, just like we would for ourselves. (If we can afford it.) But that last vet was shady. And that letter just made me more suspicious. I can't think about it get really ticked!
Thanks. But I'm not sad. I guess I was when I was talking about this. I didn't realize it. It's just hard to believe there are so many people like this in the world. And Merry Christmas to you too =)
That is HORRABLE and unthinkable. Usually if people treat animals that way, they will treat people a similar way. People like that should not be in charge of anything important or even otherwise. I'm very sorry to hear that and I hope the best for you, you deserve it.
Well, it's actual medical doctors that I had proof were doing this. That's how I knew it had been done to me. But I have a new vet and a healthy kitty now =)
It must be great to finally have him home. My dog got surgery once, and to get him home after being away was great, the house just didn't seem the same without him.
Oh, and I thought I'd tell you. I don't think doctors actually take the Hippocratic Oath. They refer to it in medical school, but they don't actually take it.

We eventually got it straightened out, by having him add a memo. But once the info has been sent to the ins company, the doc can't change it!

The following oath was accepted in 1969 by the American Veterinary Medical Association:
"Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine,I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of livestock resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.
sOLeeSoL 3 years ago
I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics.
I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence."
sOLeeSoL 3 years ago

CaribbeanPonyGirl 3 years ago
I'm sorry about Bullet =( But I'm happy to hear good news about your vet! Where did you find out about pig medicines. I think I tried searching online in the past, but I came up with nothing.
biblegirl7 3 years ago
I have a friend who raises gpigs. She gave me link to a web site with excellent info. If you like, I'll see if she can find the link. I had meds that would kill gpigs, etc. Along with a list of common gpig diseases.
CaribbeanPonyGirl 3 years ago
I'd love to see that information! If you can get it, I'd appreciate it =)

But a lot of folks with letters behind their name sure do think they are :(
theadux 3 years ago
I agree. It seems to be those letters that give them a God complex. And the arrogance is unbelievable.
biblegirl7 3 years ago
That's insane!
But I'm sad to say it doesn't surprise me.
During the brief time I spent temping at doctors' offices in the lat 90s, I quickly clued in that MD's were typically very indifferent to their patients. Anyone who actually cared appeared to be the exception, not the rule.
Whiskers being home IS a happy note.
:-)
Merry Christmas, Lisa!
OhCurt 3 years ago
Merry Christmas Curt! And you're right. I've had my share of bad doctors myself.
biblegirl7 3 years ago
I'm glad Whiskers is better! It's sad that I've heard many stories just like yours. We've had a dog die due to a vet's malpractice.
finaleia 3 years ago
I'm hearing a lot of stories like that now. It's really sad. I'm just happy we had the money. That vet wouldn't touch him until we paid, and his bladder was the size of a grapefruit before they inserted the catheter!
biblegirl7 3 years ago
I had a golden retriever that started limping. I took him to the vet, and he accused me of feeding him too much because he had gained 6 pounds, and they sent me home with expensive prescription diet food. The vet wouldn't even do the x-ray I asked for. Well, I found out from a different vet that the weight gain turned out to be from a huge tumor, and he died. I was beyond angry! I changed vets, and I've never looked back!
faething 3 years ago
OMG! I definitely would have sued that vet! AND I would have blogged it, vlogged it, told it, you name it. When I've been wronged like that, I make sure everyone knows, for their own sake, and for the safety of their pets.
biblegirl7 3 years ago
I called a lwayer, and I was told that suing someone for veterinary malpractice is not a winning case. I called three lawyers in my state, and they all said the same thing. Unless the dog was a source of income, it's considered nothing more than property. To blog and vlog about it with the name of the vet could result in ME being sued for liable or slander if it actually put any kind of dent in his business.
faething 3 years ago
I can think of 2 ways around that. ;) 1) You sue for pain and suffering... you were depressed and it hindered your relationships due to your grief. 2) You could do a "news report" vlog and use the word "allegedly" every time you mentioned their name. That's how the news reporters can do it without getting sued. ;)
biblegirl7 3 years ago
The pain and suffereing thing woulnd't hold water because the dog had a legal value of property. The law won't recognize pain and suffering for a dog. They won't; I checked... Not in this state anyway. One lawyer was totally, "I get your pain; I've had dogs... But it won't work." I switched my vet, so they don't have my business. They got into a tiny, little "trouble" over the non-compliance of sending COMPLETE records to the new vet for my other pets. It was something.
faething 3 years ago
Well, viral videos can carry a lot of weight. Just use "allegedly" every time you mention the vet's name. But that's just what I would do. I would say the name over and over again, and I would blog about it on every blog network I could find. Oh! I once saw a truck in my area, that had signs and writing all over it, about a company in town that had wronged them in some way!
biblegirl7 3 years ago
I can look into the laws in my state with regard to this. Most of the people at that clinic there were very rude to me, and I want to be sure they can't do anything against me before I write or record anything negative about them. Thanks for the encouragement!

3CoolKats 3 years ago
and the woman behind the counter takes a look at some paperwork and says "OK, so you're here to have Bab's declawed this morning I see". Cont.
3CoolKats 3 years ago
I was later told they talked about it at a meeting later on and made it a policy never to write "dec" on a chart again.
3CoolKats 3 years ago
Yikes. Both of mine are declawed, but it's a county regulation that they can't be outside anyway. It's to keep the feral cat population under control, and to prevent feline leukemia. But I would have a cow if they made a mistake like that. Although human doctors do it all the time!
biblegirl7 3 years ago
I'm an obstetrical nurse. I don't know anything about veterinary medicine. I have heard the docs doing the transcription thing into tape recorders and into the phone. What happens with it after that, I don't know...I've never worked for an office. Is it possible the note was about someone else and got put in your file? If this vet ticked off a lot of people... Plus if it was just a note from the person who answered the phones it would be the same as something entered into the actual chart.
Addue 3 years ago
sorry that's wouldn't be the same as something entered into the chart.
I hope your kitty is feeling better.
Addue 3 years ago
They definitely altered my chart. And it was obviously intentional. One of the ladies that works there is someone I've known for years. When the 1st girl told me what it said, I asked to speak to the lady I know. I assumed she would know me better than that. But even she covered for the vets. That just makes me assume they've been sued before. I'm glad to be done with them. They probably would have killed Whiskers in this emergency. But he's SO much better now! =)
biblegirl7 3 years ago
I'm probably not the best person to ask about this topic. I feel as though everything I chart is to cover my rear in this sue happy society. I don't lie, I just have to really make sure how I word things...thinking about how it would be viewed in court. If a doctor or nurse is deliberately unethical or negligent, definitely they should be called on it. But it seems everyone who doesn't have the exact experience they wanted threatens to sue.
Addue 3 years ago
I'm honestly not sure about vets and the hippocratic oath. It's my understanding that for doctors it is largely ceremonial and not even obligatory. Veterinarians and doctors would still be bound by the ethics of their state boards and any ethics set by legal precidents or found by jury in court.
Addue 3 years ago
I understand about having to be careful what you say.
biblegirl7 3 years ago
OMG! Now that I've had some sleep (I had just come in from work earlier) I'm like "what kind of disertation was I going on?" lol
Addue 3 years ago
LOL!
biblegirl7 3 years ago
It's especially cool when a cat loves you that much, cos they're fussy and much more picky than dogs ;)
It probably was best you left that vet considering your experiences there, but if they'll lie about what you said to them, I imagine there are a lot more lies in their practice. Scary.
samsarajade 3 years ago
I know. He's special =) But he still has a lot of issues. I just know how to help him with his issues. Poor thing. He's so sweet.

Report the sucker to the Vet Board. You were right, I should not have watched this. I agree with you, but I get so passionate and upset that I want to go yell at them.
RiverBirch1967 3 years ago
It's been over a year now. And I didn't know there was a vet board. Do they have to give me my entire chart if I ask for it, or would it have to be subpoena'd?

I think we should ask questions and get 2nd opinions on our pets, just like we would for ourselves. (If we can afford it.) But that last vet was shady. And that letter just made me more suspicious. I can't think about it get really ticked!
biblegirl7 3 years ago
My darling dont look so sad. Your kitty is home. Find another vet and learn from this experience. By the way merry Christmas hun.

Thanks. But I'm not sad. I guess I was when I was talking about this. I didn't realize it. It's just hard to believe there are so many people like this in the world. And Merry Christmas to you too =)
biblegirl7 3 years ago
I'm glad our recent experience was not bad, we still think our vet is good :)
boobtubious 3 years ago
That's awesome. I have a good feeling about our new one, but I haven't asked if they'll treat my guinea pig yet. =/
biblegirl7 3 years ago
That is HORRABLE and unthinkable. Usually if people treat animals that way, they will treat people a similar way. People like that should not be in charge of anything important or even otherwise. I'm very sorry to hear that and I hope the best for you, you deserve it.
RJL738 3 years ago
Well, it's actual medical doctors that I had proof were doing this. That's how I knew it had been done to me. But I have a new vet and a healthy kitty now =)

It must be great to finally have him home. My dog got surgery once, and to get him home after being away was great, the house just didn't seem the same without him.
