I ran the open novice class in 1985 on a YZ-250 (250 of the year). I routinely holeshot a 30 bike gate full of CR500's & YZ 490's. My 250 had a brutal mid- upper high but the key is power delivery. I read a holeshot help article in MXA by Bob Hannah who said "if your front wheel clears the gate first, you should own the holeshot". I probably holeshot 60% of my motos after reading that article and feathering the clutch on every shift to minimize wheelspin. Same as a tractor pull...delivery.

@dooalittledippsy Hey hey I admit your bike is bad ass, but don't bag on KTM. This bike is fast, and I've been riding since I was 5 (my first bike was a 1968 Honda MiniTrail 50cc, had many various brands and sizes since then, 2 and 4-stroke). The good thing about them is that they're powerhouses, to the point of near uncontrollable (at least MY 550 2-stroke is, never rode another KTM), the downside is parts prices and availability of parts.

everytime I see one of these yz 490's I think about how my father got killed on one when I was 12 years old, right in front of me too. We were out practicing at a local track when he got to far back on the seat and pinned the throttle wide open. He his a wire cable that was hung about 5 ft high. It ripped his head off along with his left arm... Choke up just typing this really.

I have a 490L, and I love it. Anytime I start feeling competent on more modern bikes, it is good to go back to the 490 to be humbled. It is not very tolerant of rider errors, and it will correct the rider for making mistakes, often brutally and always quickly.

I jokingly say the bike is great at everything except stopping and turning.

I disagree about the unpredictable nature of the power delivery though. I think it can be summed up in one word: "violent"
