  • Hello! The sings better today then todays "Artists"

  • Wow! What a dynamic version of this Classic! And Bill Kelly's singing is superb!

    What a band! ***** 5 Stars

  • Omg my name is Dakota and one of my best friends are name timothy lol that cool

  • this guy is a good singer stills sounds like he singing frm back in 1971, bravo guys

  • I couldn't believe I found this! This song just kept popping into my head today. I saw The Buoys when I was a teenager. My cousin and I used to go to the dances whenever we knew they were playing. Bill still sounds the same as he did when I was a teenager...phenomenal!

  • These guys do sound better now and live at that!

  • Dude's vocals sound better than on the record - hitting those hit notes pretty strong.

For the full story on the song and the writer, go to SongFacts.

  • most upbeat song about cannibalism evar!!!!!!

  • This song was about Cannibalism! Hungry as hell no food to eat And Joe said that he would sell his soul For just a piece of meat Water enough to drink for two And Joe said to me, "I'll take a swig And then there's some for you." Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do? I must have blacked out just around then 'Cause the very next thing that I could see Was the light of the day again My stomach was full as it could be
  • Amazing how good Bill Kelly sounds all these years later. The up beat tempo works very well! Nice plug for Fender guitars in this clip! :) They rock in every decade!

  • When I was Kid I thought this was an o.k. song. But only because the music was good;had a catchy riff with good vocals.Ever since I heard of that Dahmer creep,I cannot stand this song!Sorry Mr.(Bill)Kelly, but that's just the way shit is.

  • @MrAgentuncle1 It's a fucking song, deal with it.

  • Wow! Now these guys sound great! Very impressive. Love this song!

  • My bother sent me this link and it has now earned a permanent place on my desktop! Great tune, nice bass line and Bill Kelly is awesome. How I missed this in 1970, I'll never know.

  • it only gets better with age

  • Great Voice Bill Kelly

  • @teldered He certainly does sound awesome!!!!

  • This sounds awesome!!! Love this song!!!!

  • This song is truly unforgettable

  • Wish you guys would do reunion concert in NEPA!!!

  • I know all the words to this song....cuz our little hometown radio station in Belfast, Maine played it!! I don't know when "The Buoys" became "Dakota" but this live performance is very true to the original 45. Great fun hearing this again!!

  • I vaguely remember this song. A friend's older brother had the 45. It is somewhat morbid that everybody is dancing around happily while singing the story. Thanks for posting. These guys sound great and are energetic.

  • I don,t remember all the members of the group but I do remember Bill Kelly, he still sounds great.

  • I am responding to an email sent to me by souldeep69, thanx my friend,I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one,I saw The Buoys open up for April Wine in Fredericton, New Brunswick, when Timothy was a hit here in Canada,1970 I believe. They played this song, they were introduced as The Buoys and I have the album in which the name of the band was The Bouys, and I didn,t receive my information from YouTube, sorry. Peace to you.

  • Tim is gone. Where did he go? BURP....

  • This reminds me... I haven't had lunch yet...

  • sounds groovy.

  • Listen to my man!!! Hell yeah, doing it better than he did 40 years ago! Awesome, awesome!!!

  • I remember when they were called The Buoys. Creepy lyrics, but one hell of a song. I was 16 when it came out. It,s in my library, I find myself returning to it time and time again. i,ve often wondered if the radio management people ever really listened to this masterpiece. Thanx jdzine. 8Moody1

  • @8moody1 Dakota, in spite of some inaccurate information around YouTube, was never called the Buoys. They were two different groups. But Bill Kelly, who is singing lead on this video by Dakota, WAS the lead singer of the Buoys and sang the original hit. He still sounds exactly the same - meaning GREAT! He was in both groups but they were otherwise different groups, except bass player Jerry HLUDZIK who was also a member of the Buoys. But Dakota had an entirely different sound and repertoire.

  • @souldeep69 In the period between The Buoys and Dakota, Bill Kelly and Jerry Hludzuk formed a band called the Jerry-Kelly Band and recorded an Album released on Columbia records. Damn excellent record as well!

  • @souldeep69 Bill Kelly and Jerry Hludzik were both memebers of The Buoys when Timothy was recorded. They both appear in the picture on the Album cover. Before forming Dakota, they recorded an album on Epic records as The Jerry-Kelly Band.

  • I expect to see you in next years Super Bowl half-time.

  • loved going to the Alley in pottsville and shanannigans up Hazleton to see Jerry and Kelly.Fun days, fun times and alot younger for sure. They are still real good musicians!

  • SOUNDS AS GOOD TODAY AS 40 YEARS AGO

  • Brilliant vocal...he hasn't lost a thing!!!! Thanks for posting!

  • yummmmy! pass the BBQ sauce!

  • Bill Kelly is the best male vocalist in the USA!

    Outstanding live performances ALWAYS!

  • Oh man what a band this is.... pitty they're getting old, they were so youthful in the '80s but the spirit never died in them! They seed the positive joy with their music and this kind of music is my role model!

  • Theres nothing like seeing Dakota live. Please another chance to see this band in concert again soon

  • I listened to this song again and again. Really impressive singing by Bill Kelly. Sounds great!

  • Bill Kelly sings better today then he did back then. Guaranteed.

  • This is fantastic..i just bought Jerry G Hludzik´s CD and is so gooood!

Is this DVd available to buy?

    Thx Jdzine

  • Bill Kelly is really singing this live and the band is playing the song 100% live. Bill told me so. If you don't believe me, ask him. His Youtube ID is keljoy48.

  • My name is Tim(othy), unfortunately. I hated this song as a kid. I couldn't listen to it. But this guy's voice was and still is quite good. Great song. Sick bastards though. :-P

  • Hey BestTits you may have the BestTits but not the Best Ears. Compression no Compression this is a LiP sunK performance of the Song Timothy. Hey BestTits one out of three ain't bad.Still a great song

  • actualy your wrong, they sung live but released an edited dvd, (which is exactly where this is takin froM), so that the audio is better and lines up...kno the facts b4 u accuse

  • @TomTIGER69 Lip sunk? you are out of your area of expertise guy.

  • I was a teenager attending St John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA. The best band, and a real treat for us, was when the Buoys showed up at Friday night dances in our gym. The Buoys debuted Timothy at the SJHS gym just before I graduated in 1970. The basic story was well known in the NE PA area where there were many mine cave-ins. So, although we all knew the song was about the cannabalism of a miner, none of us were shocked and we damn sure knew it wasn't a mule!

  • People dancing to a song about CANNIBALISM??!!

    I LOVE IT!!

  • Comment removed

  • supposedly about the Sheppton mine disaster in Northeastern Pa. during which cannibalism had been implied.

  • fantastic sounds exactly like the original record

  • Magicians never tell others tricks of the trade.Lip syncing and backing tracks are quite common on live performance. Especially for hit songs that people are use to hearing in a certain way. One would not expect the production crew or filming crew to say hey they are lip syncing Timothy just as the crew at a magic show are not going to say these are all tricks not real magic. It does not bother me that they are lip syncing Timothy it isn't a big whoop that they are lip syncing its quite common.

  • THIS IS NOT A LIP SYNC.

  • Hi All! I was at this show and also know the production crew that filmed it.

    This is live.

I have also heard Dakota's accoustic live show and it was equally as great. Bill Kelly is a true talent whether you like Dakota or not : The guy can sing.

  • Even people who are considered real singers, like, say, Bruce Springsteen and Jennifer Hudson, perform alongside pre-recorded vocals. During the Super Bowl, when Hudson sang the national anthem and Bruce did the half-time show, they weren't out there without a safety net. They used backing tracks--Why are people so upset by the idea of Britney lip-synching? Maybe because she didn't even indulge the illusion of live vocals with the usual "Hi ya'all! What's up?

  • People do use pre recorded audio, but not in this case. Obviously.

  • yes all there with a backtrack was a great song so what if he's lip syncing enjoy i

  • Don't listen to this guy, just because the audio video sync is off a little, like thousands of other videos on youtube. It happens when you upload videos sometimes on youtube because of their compression.

  • It's live...listened to it 4 times, watched carefully, but ya' know...who gives a shit if it's live or Memorex???? Always liked this song...it's one of those sleepers from the 70's...very few people know about it. I went to college in the area they were from. If I called the Dallas radio stations with a request for this...they would probably say "huh???"

  • Looks live to me. But I don't know who Dakota is...some of the same guys in

    the Buoys?

  • If you listen carefully you will notice that all the instruments in this recording are not on that stage

  • I am not saying anything other than this is a lip synching performance and have no idea of the origin of the recording or the way it is generated.Plus your statement we all know is false since i don't agree

  • How dumb can you be? Well its obviously not the studio vocal we all know, so you are saying they went to the studio, recoreded a new vocal track, then play it when they have a show. HOW FUCKING STUPID ARE YOU?

  • what a fucking idiot tiger tom is

  • Yes one who see's the simple truth that the Dakota's are lip synching Timothy would be considered a fucking idiot by someone who can't tell the difference between a live and lip sunk performance.Thank you

  • The simple fact is this is not a live performance it's a recording from a dvd of a live performance and all i am saying it appears from the recording of this live performance that they were lip syncing the song timothy. No big whoop who would care that they are lip synching at that live performance. It's no longer live its a recording and its a great song they were lip synching

  • i don't think i know and of course we are all idiot's its not a big deal that they are lip syncing it's a great song whether they are or not.

  • there is no lip sync

  • it is not a lip sync the audio video sync of this video is off, check the other videos of the same thing

  • TomTiger is absolutely obsessed with this video and shows how much of an idiot he is. I have this dvd and it's completely live with no lip sync at all. It's just a fantastic recording, which maybe he can't accept. He even thinks it's the original 70s record being played in the background and can't accept that they can still play the song as well as the original recording.

  • Might be the other way around big deal if they are lip syncing it might be your obsession that they are not lip synching. it's still a great song

its just I have been in the music business for fifty years my best friend was a composer did sound tracks for movies. He also designed synthesizers and played grand piano. He taught me the profession tricks of the trade .This was one of HIS his favorite song and he taught me about it 18 years ago

  • Did your best "friend" also teach you how to be extremely argumentative and that you could never ever be wrong? Giving your "friend's" credentials says nothing and means nothing when it comes to lip sync vs live. This is live. Look at the other video that's more in sync. This one is out of sync.

  • This song has great melody, vocals and a good riff. I hope that is why everybody (including me) enjoys this song so much. Seems perverted to smile and party about cannibalism!!!

  • This is so cool to hear live! I wish the keys were a bit louder. They sound great! Good job Dakota!

    "Timotheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

    Time to eat! ;)

  • These guys are such great sports, seriously. The way they perform this, it's completely catchy and completely spooky, just like the studio recording. And yeah, the singer sounds GREAT. Why can't artists this age who hit it really big, and now tour endlessly, take decent care of _their_ voices?

I'm lookin' at you, Ian Anderson! Stop messing up my favorite Tull songs with your squawking!

Thanks for the post jdzine :D

  • Why did they change their name from "Buoys" to "Dakota"?

  • It is amazing how the singer sounds exactly the same all these years later. Great song.

  • My goodness! The singer can still hit those notes, and sounds as good as they day they recorded the record!!!!!!

  • sounds really good

  • Great song! GREATEST SINGER EVER!! EXCELLENT LEAD guitar player!!!AWESOME!

  • this song is over twice as old as i am, and i love it! lol

  • Cannabilism is such a great theme for pop songs. I'll never understand why it isn't used more often. Sounding great - even better than the original.

  • Man! Still sound great!

  • sounds great[just like the original], and you can tell these guys are having fun..........

  • I found this 45 in my mom & dads's record collection back in '75 when I was twelve years old and loved it. In fact I've been playing this song in my acoustic duo since we started in 1990. The only trouble is we have to play at the end of the night cuz my voice is wrecked by the end of the song,;-D AWESOME!!

  • go dakota

  • Jerry roks

  • A Rupert Holmes song!! What a great band!!!
