Great vid...linked to it from the Dragon Door forums FAQ thread. I am only 2 weeks in and & RKC instructor, George Gomola, was just giving me this same advice today. Right now I am just doing some Z-Health stuff, & Deadlift. Today he showed me just how to clean the kettlebell at the start of the TGU when you're still on the ground & the very first move when you're coming off the ground & getting onto your elbow. I am still impatient but old (47) & injured enough to take this advice.
I discoverd kettlebells 6 months ago, went from a 12kg, now can just manage a 32kg snatch on each arm- I am 53 yrs old and went at it like a bull at a gate.
Wish I read enter the kettlebell six months ago, and seen this video.
Do you think I should start from scratch again ? cos thats what I am thinking of doing.
@chibluth Don't think of it as starting from scratch, just think of it as starting a new program, because that's what it is. If possible I would also get your flexibility and stability evaluated (preferably by an FMS trainer) to ensure you don't have any issues that may hold you back in the future.
Great advice! The k.i.s.s method boiled down to 2 moves, and they work! Any one reading this who doughts how good this advice is needs to rethink their training. "Low tech/ hi concept" is pavels old phrase and it is written on the side of one of my 40kg kb's for a reason!
I haven't read Pavel or anyone else and had just started training.
I have been doing mostly swings, but was trying cleans and jerks also. I felt I needed to learn better technique right away when going into rack position.
This had me wondering what I really should be doing with the kb; the swings I took to naturally as I was able to attain good form right off. I felt I was beating myself up going into rack, though.
I'm not a newbie, but I need to train like one because I've been doing it wrong for a long time. I've just opened ETK again and I will heed this advice. Thanks ATL.
AMEN brother!!!! I recently spent over a month recovering from a torn ligament in the thoracic spine from getting too far ahead of myself with my kettlebell and doing snatches and stuff when I had no business to. TGU's and swings may be "boring" but I am sure they would have helped correct some of my imbalances (like a tight/less flexible shoulder) that may have contributed to my injury.
Hi Jordan, how long do i have to do swings for until I can be considered ready to move on, right now I can do about two and a half minutes of swings before i need to take a break (my grip starts to get weak), will 10 minutes with no rest be a stage of decency :) ?
The standard I usually go by is either 10 minutes of 1 minute on/ 1 minute off or 20 minutes of 30 seconds on/ 30 seconds off. That shows you've built up the strength and endurance to necessitate a transition to snatches, presses, etc.
Thanks for sharing Jordan. It could not be said enough to stick to the basics and stop over-complicating things. People just vary waaaaaaaaaaaay to much.
I am actually about ready to post something along these same lines on my own blog.
The phone ringing made me laugh really hard. Other than that, sound advice man. I got a hell of a lot stronger on just swings and getups (and i'm still a beginner with KBs).
You are a hugely gifted communicator, I am very pleased to have found your videos.

I agree , BUT if your a single due in your late 20s and 30s you need a chest exercise and biceps exercise for the ladies.

The only fault one can quibble about in your excellent presentations is the low sound intensity. I learnt a lot from your videos. Thanks!

Thenks everyone, I appreciate the positive responses. I've been shooting these videos for two years, and still haven't learned to silence my phone.

@averagetoelite
Put it in another room when you're shooting video. That way even if it rings, it won't show up on the video.
Much like what i need to do with my children when I try to shoot a video. I push the little buggers outside, otherwise it's a no go. :)
