Comparing Federer And Sampras, has been always the main gossip between tennis lovers, for me there is no doubt that Roger Federer broke the most tennis records and the most important one of 16 grandslam,on the other hand sampras played in a stronger era, and was competing with many top players while federer's main rivalry is Nadal and later djokovic. Federer is technicaly better than sampras and his forhand is unique.Sampras is a better server with "in my opinion" a more efficient backhand.
@TheMrEisenfaust Borg was my favorite growing up. He was just going into retirement when I was starting to play, so he was a total legend to me. I always talk to my students about who THE GREATEST is, and it's a tough one. I played through the 80's era, 90's era, and then into the early 2000's. I've been fortunate enough to be on the court with many of the "great's". I always make the argument that if Borg played a few more years, & made the trip to Australia, he may have around 20 slams?
@samer737 Not officially, but functionally yes. He never played another pro match on the tour, he dropped out of several tournaments before making it official.
pete sampras -a lovely guy - humble and sweet and played some of the best tennis I have ever had the pleasure of watching; Wimbledon 99 to name but one which has to rate as the most perfect tennis ever played by anyone.
I'm sorry..but I still think that Pete was the best ever. His competition was stiffer, his serve was better, and his attitude was superior. At his best, when his serve was good(which was most of the time)...all he had to do to win the match was break you once per set.....match over. Best of all time. Sorry Federer.
@TheSlyfucker It's not just competition, it's homogenization of court surfaces. Sampras played when grass was fast and clay was snail slow and when there were surface specialists. Those days are long gone.
I luved Pete the first time I saw him serve!! He had something special!! I watched him play at the very start of his pro career and I followed him 2 this very moment!! Pete was and is the greatest tennis player ever!!! I will always luv u Pete!!!
@kyzersoze74 I will probably stop watching tennis, but he clearly has a lot of tennis in him yet. And hopefully more slams. Hope he wont retire for a long time.
@kyzersoze74 Im sure that if they had seen Fed´s playing only a year later, they would have reconsidered
that statement. Ironically I am not sure if Federer would have won as many slams as he has, without the influence of Sampras. I mean in Fed´s early career he could brilliantly serve & volley in the style of Sampras. And he took that experience with him into a new era, playing a new generation of players who didnt have those skills. And I think it means a lot to Fed to be considered the GOAT

why Sampras retired so early?
aca8638 3 months ago
@aca8638 he didn't have the drive to win titles anymore. he was content with winning one more open in 02', calling it a career, and having a family
