I don't see the elbow to the head. I see a glove to the head and a two minute penalty. I don't get how the refs called that, but didn't call Clutterbucks hit.
they both made bad choices. Clutterbuck clearly boarded the other guy. (sorry I don't recall his name) and Gillies clearly led with an elbow straight to Clutterbuck's head. I wouldn't have cared too much if he had aimed a little lower.
@Littleguidofan The hit was dangerous, but only because Diebenedetto turned at the last second. Boarding could've been the only call. Gillies on the other hand, aimed straight at Clutterbuck with his fists to the head. That's not the smartest move when you just got back. There's a difference between defending your teammate and playing dirty.
@DeviltoGeorgia34 gillies didnt try to hit him dirty, if clutterbuck didnt turn his body this wouldnt have happened..clutterbuck cant hold up and just stop after hitting dibinedetto dirty
@Littleguidofan Dibenedetto turned and stopped cuz he overshot the puck. Clutterbuck wasn't prepared for that. He thought the guy would pick up the puck and skate without slowing down, so it would be a side hit. It's debateable, but the only call could've been boarding with how fast the play happened. Dibenedetto just made a small mistake and it cost him.
Gillies, however, was poised to take out Clutterbuck from the get-go. Watch how he didn't hold up as he went for the hit.
How can anybody say it was a clean hit...It was behind the play=interference. Hits him in the face=roughing. Leaves his feet to make a hit=charging. Of course, Clutterbuck is a hit from behind/boarding, which is the type of hit that we've seen suspensions for more often than anything else. I guess there's a limit to standing up for your teammates. Gillies just plays for the wrong team. If he played for Boston or Pittsburgh, Clutterbuck would be suspended and Gillies wouldn't.
Ten games will do nothing. Nine games did nothing last time, he came right back and pulled this crap.
Until the NHL takes a real stand and causes harm to a player's livelihood and career, nobody will pay attention. At the very, very least he should be out the rest of this season. I think something like 30 games would be truly fitting.
If he comes back and re-offends, he's out of the league. Simple as that.
@wyatt04579 You probably think there's nothing wrong with your eyes but YOU'RE FUCKING BLIND. First off its interference because Clutterbuck wasn't making any attempt to play the puck, in fact it wasn't even near him. Secondly, he hit Clutterbuck high with one hand basically punching Clutterbuck in the face while slamming his head into the glass. Yeah there's "nothen" wrong with that hit.....
Why is everyone saying it was a hit to the head? Gillies didn't touch his head. 0:56 you can see his forearms are down by Clutterbucks waist. People need to chill.
@UKRedWing What the last 15 seconds of the video you fucking moron. He went for the head specifically. I thought the same thing at first, but you have to look at all the angles.
@UKRedWing Whatever you're smoking you need to hook me up. Watch the slow motion replay towards the end. Not a hit to the head? I love old time hockey as much as anyone - but this is a pretty cut and dry cheapshot and Gilles is going to pay handsomely for it.
lol @ the Islanders announcers "I'm not sure what Gillies did wrong there"...are you serious? Clutterbuck didn't have the puck, and Gillies comes late and hits him in the head with a forearm/elbow. You can call it interference, roughing, or elbowing, but to call it a "fairly clean hit" is hilarious.
The Isles announcers didn't have the angle the Wild announcers did. When Iw atching the isles footage I didn't see the big deal either. After watching the Wild footage, I did.
guys like gillies are turning the islanders into the laughing stock of the NHL. Rumors of Islanders moving to Kansas city are floating around. Get Gillies out of the league!
wow the Islanders announcers are just as clueless as the Islanders management and Gillies. They all should be ashamed of themselves. They are at the bottom of the barrel in the NHL and are acting like a joke.
Their whole organization is nothing but a disgrace.
@VodkaAce I strongly agree with you 100%. It's not surprising that many NHL players on that media poll weeks ago said that they would least likely play for the New York Islanders. They are pretty much the Oakland Raiders of the NHL.
Dibnedetto was going to get clocked wth a clean hit, but lost control of the puck at the last minute and turned into the boards. Clutterbuck lets up on the play and does not hit Dibenedetto hard. The hit occured during action.
Gillies hit was even more unsuspecting and did not happen in the course of play. He hit him high.
Gillies does basically the same thing Clutterbuck does 10 seconds before. It's just that Gillies looks like he belongs on an episode of America's Most Wanted naturally. That and Dibenedetto gets up off the ice quickly and doesn't play it up like Clutterbuck.
vs pitt i didnt like what gillies did it was dirty. here i cant say the same. clutterbuck had cheap shot okposo earlier in the game and you can see here he threw a hit to a player looking at the boards. Gillies did what are you told to do and thats stand up for your team mates. If anything he should have gotten 2 for a roughing or late hit and clutterbuck should have gotten 5 but this was one of those Name penalties where they see who it was and throw him out...
@moose4mayor58 no, im pretty sure he got kicked out because he deserved it. He elbowed to the head, into the glass. He should have been suspended for the rest of the year after the Pittsburgh incident. Dude needs to get banned, he has like what, 40 career NHL games under his belt and he's 30+. Gives the sport a bad name.
I was at the game - it did not look that aggressive of a hit in person....On replay - I don't think Gillies made an illegal hit - can't see the status of any elbow. Clutterbuck was penalized for Boarding - not the choir boy the Minny announcers make him out to be. How about the Boarding penalty by Peters in period 3 ? He gets 2 mins - Gillies will be getting 4 games - and somewhere - Dion Phaneuf is laughing
Clutterbuck also got a 2 min boarding penalty for the hit on dibenidetto

@delacrioxwalrus ya it's called interference.
baseballkidmw2 3 months ago
Elbow to the head or not, you have to admit that Gillies hit Clutterbuck in the head and that Clutterbuck was injured on the play.
I am also pretty sure that there is a rule against hitting someone who is not playing the puck.

Clutterbuck's hit: only from behind due to Dibenedetto misplaying the puck. He did his best to try not to hurt the guy.
Only possible call-boarding.
Gillies's hit: relentless, to the head, from behind, with fists up, when your team is up 3-0.
Roughing + Charging + Interference + Elbowing + Checking From Behind = Stupidity and Suspension.
Islander Camera Angle: looks okay.
Wild Camera Angle: CLEARLY a dirty cheap shot.
Clutterbuck deserves to be the hits leader in the NHL.
