  • anyboby know what annette is doing these days? wonder if they asked her to come back and fill michaels spot.

  • WOW, even better than The Modettes... Dem's fightin wurdz....

  • I love the Bangles even more as modettes! :-)

  • LOve Debbi's look! Looks like Goldie Hawn ala Laugh-In, behind the kit.

  • @wildnites558 TOTALLY!!!! I love Laugh-In!

  • @wildnites558 TOTALLY!!!

  • It's really cool that crashsite000 posted this video! I've never seen it before, and I love the Bangles music in every stage of their career....good stuff, all of it.

  • Annette is so cute! Bass like a toilet lid is also pretty damn good!

  • The "Fem" Beatles...wow!...sure changed their looks too huh?

  • Hopping jumping Susanna!!

Whooooh, she is exciting "mad" - ed

  • This was awesome, thanks! The Bangles are my favorite band of all time!!

  • I really dig this song! Maybe their best? Maybe.

  • how cool is this though! I was little and I was inspired!!

I must of been around about 8 or so .... and ...

I remember being little and soaking it all in...

    fashion and music and such...

  • God L.A. was fun back then. Sad, pale reflection of its former self now.

  • it's lip synched, rhetorical. still, a good song. first LP, i think.

  • Too bad the compression on this video clip is so fierce.

  • Michael was my favorite Bangle but I liked Annette, too...great video, thanks.

  • Opinions are opinions (I'll ignore the 'drag' stuff), but objectively speaking there's no way that Annette's as good a bassist as Michael is. Even before joining the Bangles she was a very experienced bassist and extremely well regarded on the LA club scene, and she was so good a musician that even noted asshole David Kahne couldn't overdub her, so that she was the only Bangle to play on all of AOTP and Different Light.

  • That entire album is great. Thanks for posting this.

  • saw the Bangs at Cafe du Grande , circa 1981, Sunset Strip, Rodney on the Rock, Morts Deli in Santa Monica and lots more , RJ

  • I remember rushing home to catch it on TV. We were pretty lucky to have KROQ, KXLU and MV3!

  • MV3: The Precursor to "Video One"

  • MV3: The Precursor to "Video One"

  • I love the whole Paisley Underground sound. The Bangles EP was wonderful. The Real World, Want You. etc.

  • They were first called, The Bangs.

  • Listen to Day Tripper...ooooo Bangles LOVED the Beatles,..dare say my maidens borrowed a tad

  • @BeccaGSD They have always said they(the bangles) borrowed the bass line from the Turtles, who inturn borrowed it from the Beatles.

  • It's a total long shot, I'm sure, but now that Michael's more or less retired for the time being, I'd kill to see Annette perform with the Bangles again. I'm guessing that's less likely than Mary, Diana and Cindy reuniting as the Supremes, but a guy can dream.

  • Bangles, 3 OClock, Green on Red, Rain Parade, Dream Syndicate, and my own lesser known but equally psychedlic pop band. That with the healthy punk, art, new wave scenes made L.A. a really fun place for music in the early 80s.

  • Screw you CatchyJ!!! Michael Steele was an extremely talented bassist and still is. Annette Zilinskas was a fine bass player as well. Those women could all be wearing burlap sacks and still look smoking hot! Get a clue you douchebag!

  • ah how fun it is listening to people argue in cyberspace lol....

  • A-Fucking Men

  • @eazye0512 Thank you for telling it the it is! Annette may be returning to the band later this year( 2010 )

  • @lch2365 Where did you hear that load of shit???

  • @lch2365 ???????//

  • Comment removed

  • @CatchyJ You are simply trying to ruffle feathers. Make you feel importent???

  • Comment removed

  • @BeccaGSD No that is my honest opinion and you misspelled important btw. Annette was super cute and fun but always pushed in the back which is why she probably left. Big mistake! The replacement looked like a man in drag to me. She had that depressing way of speaking, looked bored all the time and has a man's name. She looked to me like a heavy metal dude from that era. By the third album they all looked awful in my opinion. At that point their style went awry but they we're still great.

  • @CatchyJ Fuck correcting my grammer. Not even remotely part of the point. Pushed to the Back?? No, A was not. She played as she played, was not a singer and left the band of her own volition to start blood on The Saddle.

Did you only see the Bangles as eye candy?? If Michael wasnt your cup o tea,...fine,..BUT if you ever LISTENED to them,.Listened to the Bass, you would see Michael is an exemplary bassist, far superior to A.Z and was just "quiet" as music was more importAnt then tits and ass.

  • @BeccaGSD You're that upset because I'm not a fan of Michael Steele? Really? Nothing in my post said anything about their bodies looking hot or referenced tits and ass. Michael Steele always looked like a drag queen or headbanger dude and the 80's could be pretty tacky - they all had bad style at one point. Annette had so much more style than Michael and played the bass just as well I would say and couldn't care less if someone disagrees. Grow up and get a life

  • @CatchyJ

If you think Micky Steele looked like a "drag queen or head banger dude" well...!!!! Btw it's been my experience that gay guys pretending to be straight can't tell the difference between a pretty girl and an ugly one.

  • @CatchyJ Still never answered where you heard this BS that Annette was returning

    Not a chance,..NOT happening

  • @BeccaGSD I never said a word about her returning - that was someone else. Calm down.

  • @CatchyJ Annette was never part of the plan just played as a bridge to other projects she had lined up with her boyfriend, Meanwhile Michael was living with Vicki shortly after the ep was cut. Michaels experience pretty much gave the Bangles the final push. I met Micki and she didn't seem like a drag queen to me. Micki started the Runaways but was pushed out by someone who wanted to take the band in another direction.

  • I saw them in 1982 at the Concert Factory in Costa Mesa with the Jets and some other Mod bands (3 o'clock maybe). We would go to the Circle City Club and then over to Midnight movies for Quadraphinia.

  • whoa is that Annette Zilinskas on bass?

  • Ah Man they look so hott!!!!!

  • Incredibly hot!!!

  • Will this stuff ever be rereleased??

Can't find this stuff anywhere! They were so great then!

  • I remember in about 82/83 NWOBHM had burned itself out and all the new romantics were in big. These were a real breath of fresh air at the time, think ive even got that 5 track album of theirs somewhere

  • Cool. I saw them at the Roxy back in '82 when they still had Annette Zilinskas as their bassist (before she split and joined Blood On The Saddle). MV3 was pretty much my favorite show back then, too!

I agree with some other posters here that their best output was the original "Getting Out of Hand/Call on Me" 45, their first EP (which includes this song), and their debut LP. Great stuff.

  • How old were you then eight? Lol. I saw them at the Roxy in 83 with Mike Quercio's The Three Oclock. Long live LA's Paisley underground!

  • Ha, sadly I was a lot older than eight then! Don't remind me that I'm gettin' old...lol

I think the Rain Parade was the opening band when I saw them. Not 100% sure -- I saw so many concerts back then that they become a blur. I saw the Bangles with the Three O' Clock (and two other forgotten bands) at the now-defunct Pomona Valley Auditorium (PVA) back in '84. I just remember dozens of Vespa scooters lined up in the parking lot, driven by mods. Good times, good times.

  • Tha Cathay de grand, Madame Wong's chinatown, the Vex, Raji's. What A time!

  • This show used to be on 4pm in the midwest (Chicago) time.... And I NEVER missed a SHOW!

  • is this lip sync?

  • Everyone lip synched on MV3. I remember seeing the Psychedelic Furs on the show. Richard Butler flat out missed a lyric while the camera had him in close up. He just grinned, looked away, and carried on with the next verse.

Like others have said, the Bangles were the best when they were playing 60s inspired jangle pop. Any one else think they owe the Beatles' "Taxman" big time for this song?

  • great stuff :)

  • This is The Bangs/Bangles I remember from the old LA scene. Debbie Peterson sang a lot of the songs, which is unique for a drummer. Note that Annette Z is on bass and not the much later (and brought-in-by-the-record-company).

It's funny because now their all known for silly pop songs later, but at the time they could raise the roof and were very, very popular in the underground scene. Their live version of Love's "7and7is" still stays with me 20 plus years later.

  • The early beginning of The Bangles...song sounds like a little bit of Beatles. And the next Bangles changes the music and vocals style like we watched nowadays...

  • lol the second guitar reminds me somehow

on the song "taxman" from the Beatles ...

(not the singing and the lead guitar)

  • Scary - even their haircuts are reminiscent of the beatles. Anyone know what year this video is from? Go, girls!

  • Bangles in "Garage-version"

  • Nice video, but I think that Susana has a better voice than the one who lead sang this video.

  • Comment removed

  • look better and sound better than they ever have...

  • Way cool even if the video quality is a little low (can't be helped). Love the mixture of Byrds and Beach Boys riffs with girl band harmonies...goes to show the Bangles were more than just 'Walk Like an Egyptian'

  • i guess Susanna was a little chubby back then!

  • ?! Looks fine to me. She's got a short haircut, and she's not a rail thin model, plus she's tiny.

  • QUE BUEN VIDEO, NUNCA LO HABIA VISTO

  • Yeah The Bangles is like the Girls version of The Beatles. Susanna Hoffs plays Rickenbacker and so did The Beatles. On my Rickenbacker's I play Beatles and Bangles stuff also my own songs I write.

  • too bad they couldn't play it live... loved these gals... glad i got to see them a few times back in the day... annette rocked in blood on the saddle!

  • Saw them as the Bangs about 81? Still have the Bangs single on vinyl.

  • they should have stuck with this calling. classic.

  • Bassist was Annette Zilinskas at this time. She was later replaced by Michael Steele.

  • I am the guy that originally copied/edited this video from my old VHS video of the MV3 show. I left it someplace on the web and I guess it got found. I'm not mad. I am just surprised how stuff gets found. VIVA LA INTERNET & YOUTUBE!!!

  • i wish michael steele would come back..

  • This is when they were at their best...

After they "made it" it was all downhill

    thanks for the post

    :)

  • I wonder why annette wasnt asked back when Michael decided to call it a day. Abby is great, but shes very much a session gal

  • Thanks for posting!!!!!!

  • Great look and sound. Wish they'd go back to that...the bassist isn't bad looking either.

  • This is what we call "real music"

  • I had no idea early Bangles sounded so "Rubber Soul/Revolver-ish"! This is great stuff! Bass line faintly reminds me of "Tax Man". Good stuff!

  • WOW!!!

i bought this e.p. for $5.99 yrs. and yrs. ago and played it so much, i wore the printing off it... this is great crashsite! thank you!

  • I love this song. I have the EP Record. I even have there First song "Bitchen Summer". Thank you for putting this song on You Tube. I never saw the video. It is great!

  • The Bangles - short-haired!!!! Wow, how girlish!

  • Anyone count the times Hoffs twirls around? Is that her only move?

  • Is this all live or a lip-synch job? Sounds too fluid and smooth to be live.

  • all band performances on MV3 were lip-synched as far as I know.

  • @huskyjerk I believe it's live, it's not the same as the original version and they were amazing live! They sounded way better live then their recordings the music and the vocals. I was very lucky to have seen them many times in small clubs before they became big. I really think they were much better and a lot more fun before the record company got hold of them and turned them into glittery sexy girls instead of the cute, cool, hipsters they used to be.

  • thanks for the vid!! I had never seen it before

  • I loved early Bangles. That "pulling" from the British Invasion sound coming from four California girls (who kick butt on their instruments) is just awesome.

  • I agree! I had their first E.P (with this song on it) and they rocked! But I have to admit I went right off them when they had their '80s Power Pop Make-Over.

  • great upload, THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I wish that michael was with the band from then instead of annette zilinskas.

  • i need that bass........

  • Actually I think it's the distinct sound of the Rickenbacker guitar. The Jam, Beatles, Bangles all have em - but Susana definitely has the sex appeal.

  • Paisley underground...indeed. Once that Walkin' like an Egyptian shit came out it was all over for these gals. Susanna is awesome still and recently recorded a great album with Matthew Sweet titled "Under the Covers - Vol. 1"

  • Do they perform any of the pre All Over the Place tunes in concert?

  • I never knew they had a clip for I'm in Line! WOW. I dug thus song as much as the Real World. Everybody knows American Bandstand, Soul Train, and they likes were lip synced but dig it, this is a classic performance by a group with the original lineup (Annette Z) and a song that you will likely never ever never hear them perform again on stage. Suzanna is super sex kitten sexy with the bob cut and mod dress.

  • Still a great band live. BTW, Susanna would be super sexy in a potato sack, LOL...

  • grat song big bangles fan but never heard this one, i love it. great bass line, sounds a lot like the bass line the "jam" used a lot.

  • Are you people insane? This is brilliant! Go out and buy the Real World EP. Classic Paisley Underground stuff and Susanna Hoffs is a hottie. What? Look, Egyptian, etc. are good too but this is garage rock at it's Rodney on the Roq best.

  • OMG OMG OMG OMG

  • HEY ! they are lip synching just like Donny & Marie osmond....and their goofy kid brother jimmy

    and that goofy kid brother

  • This performance is much like 60s pop such as the Monkees, and many others. Who can count? And the B52s.

  • Bang-LES, Beat-LES... I always thot they named themselves after the Beatles. This is the first time I ever heard this song, and I think my hunch was right. Thankfully, they left this style behind.

  • This is when the Bangles were great. The first EP and first full album was the best. Once they became "popular", their music suffered.

  • I Always Love The Bangles But I Think This Song Is Bad... And They're Too Kitch, When All Over The Place appeared they definitly change style

  • If there are stage "monitors" (speakers) in front of their feet, does that mean it's live, and vice versa? This live TV performance of In Your Room showed the monitors:

    youtube. com/watch?v=azii18RTTu8

(Remove the space after the dot.)

  • The bassline and guitar sounds like "Taxman" by the Beatles in parts of this..prolly intentional.........

  • Yes, it certainly does. Played over the same D#9 chord, too.

  • That was a popular riff to emulate among late 70s/early 80s 60s-revival bands. "Start!" by The Jam uses it, too.

  • yea, thats what i was trying to say, i have a rick and i know it has a distinc sound what i was getting at is not so much the sound but the run that sounded very JAMish....love them bangles though...eeeehaw!!

  • I know for sure those gals where lip syncing that tune, I saw the bangles in concert and let's just say.....They sound a lot different live and that's all I have to say about that.

  • Uh, yeah, they sound about 100,000 times better live, they are a kick-ass live band.

  • Is that the same bassist they later had? She looks so different. Good tune, by the way.

  • The bassist in the video is Annette Zilinskas. As far as I know, she left the band before they recorded their first LP All Over the Place and was replaced by Michael Steele (female despite the name).

  • This is really cool. Thanks for putting this up! This is a much better representation of the 80's than Musical Youth and Berlin(bullshit b.t.w.). I love this song because it sounds like it was recorded in 1966....really tight and fun!

  • Susanna Hoffs looked and danced like a dork.

  • As with "The Real World", absolutely superb and a real joy to see.....

  • Very glad I got to see this line-up live. I love me some Debbi! Not to get in on the Annette arguement but she CAN sing. She was in a cool country/punk band Blood on the Saddle and could definitely belt out a tune.

  • Very cool video! This is my favorite era of The Bangles. Debbi's always been my favorite. Not to get into the Annette argument but she CAN sing. She joined a very cool country/punk band called Blood on the Saddle and she shared lead vocals with another member.

  • No one was more let down by their change in style after their EP. All over the Place was a mess despite it having a couple of catchy tracks. I too loved them dressed this way and being a 60's type garage pop band. Annette was way cute too. She would later quit them and join Blood on the Saddle.

  • great ! sounds like "Taxman." Suzzannahh is having so much fun. WAY before they had to get all primped up and shoot coy expressions to the camera - this is real - nothing but bright infecious energy.

  • You'd never guess from this video that Susanna Hoffs would become a sex symbol. Their "look" really masked what a gorgeous woman she was. But I agree with the other comments that the Bangles had a much cooler sound before they got popular.

  • What a cool White Flag t-shirt had Annette!!!

    Cool

  • bass line sounds exactly like "Taxman" and "Start" during the verses. Funny thing is I used to run home to watch MV3 after school in junior high.

  • Not only was their sound better pre-mainstream, their look was better too, in my opinion - more in keeping with their mid-60s sound. Susanna's 60s-cut minidress and flat 60s shoes look way better than the 80s spandex minidresses and shoulder pads they wore later on.

  • Thats because she came in very close before they started to record All Over The Place, and didn't had the time to write any songs. Michael's 8 songs are usually considered among the best efforts by the Bangles fans. She sang on Doll Revolution three songs without any record label in sight, and them having full control. But what do Susanna, Vicki, and Debbi know anyway. ;)

  • @DeathtrapDungeon I love you Deathtrap,...You are so in my veins on all things....THIS

  • @BeccaGSD Just ignore CatchyJ. To me it's obvious he/she doesn't know much about music. Miss Steele is one of the finest bassplayers I've ever heard, and I feel sorry for CatchyJ, who think it's more important to be fun and cute, than to know your intstrument...he/she has obviously missed the point.

  • I've never seen this before and THIS sounds WAAAY better than their later mainstream sound( I could never stand Walk Like an Egyptian) why didn't they continue to rock like this????

  • WOW, this is a great clip. I've heard this song a bazillion times, and I never realized it was Debbie. I had assumed that it was Vicki (I was never great at telling their voices apart) and I don't recall specific vocal credits on the EP-just writing credits and what each member provided.

  • Fantastic! Bangles (Bangs) before they were chewed up and spit out by the Industry.

  • Crashsite, You are a GOD! I totally remember some of these clips! Do you have full shows?

  • Just one question - why didn't they let Annette sing? That's why she left. After all, they eventually let Michael sing leads. Just pondering.

  • Becasue the Bangles were the Peterson sisters and Hoffs. The bass player was expendable.

  • That didn't answer the question at all.

  • Um yeah it did. Annette was nothing but a bass player. There was no real songwriting or singing talent, hence the no singing.

  • how do you know this without hearing her sing? She obviously could hold a tune, considering the Bang(le)s were essentially a harmony group they would need somone who could sing. And Annette went on to sing in other bands. All I'm asking is why Annette wasn't given the chance while Michael was.

  • My point is the majority of the songs were not written by her, regardless of her singing ability. Possibly as a collective, the band didn't think her songs were good enough. Obviously if they were she would have lasted longer. And correct me if I'm wrong but by the time Michael sang any lead, they were already in the shitter anyway.

  • The majority? they had 6 songs (4 originals on the EP, and 2 on the Bangs single). Her singing/songwriting had no bearing on her lasting longer because she quit because of those reasons. And Michael did sing leads early on ("I'm Not Talking", etc) in the Bangles and even earlier with the Runaways and other groups; just that none appeared on "All Over the Place".

  • And why do you think that is?

  • I could totally be wrong on this, but I believe that the songs for "All Over the Place" had pretty much been completed by the time that Michael came on the scene-which would account for why none of hers are on the album.

  • amen brother

  • great clip! saw them in NYC with this line-up in '82/3.

  • Incredible! Thanks for posting these clips!
