@flupmakintosh he was amazing on shooting stars! the funny sketches he used to do were brilliant. remember mark lamar had to pretend to be pissed off as well. it was important to have someone offsetting the whackyness which will self was brilliant at
Question on trainers - and frankly I was disappointed that Selfy didn't bring it up: how the f**k do you get dog turds out from all those grooves on the sole?
On another point, Will Self's persona in this is more a less a dead rip-of of Peter Cook's E.L. Wisty. Funny enough, but a rip-off nonetheless.
Being only 20, if I want to watch any comedy on TV I have to watch shit sketch shows, or a panel show with jimmy "pan face" carr swaggering it about and pissing me off. Shame I've only just discovered WIll Self.
I don't understand why people are getting in such a tizzy about the supposed tension between Paul and Will, even choosing sides. If you call this tension you must lead a very sheltered life, in which someone looking at you cockeyed can create suicidal tendencies.
@annikee59 I think his vision of how airports should be would in reality get old very quickly if you were a regular air traveller. It would be a bit like having to go to Disneyland all the time.
Can I put people mistaking comedians' comedy personas for the personalities of the comedians themselves into Room 101? Judging solely from this show, we have no way of knowing whether Paul and Will like or dislike each other. Nor does it matter, as long as they can be professional and create an entertaining experience for us all.
Will wins this battle of the wills (then again, he's had more experience). Starting the show by playing the class card- "Ooh, isn't Magma a long word" (it's five letters long)- wasn't exactly inviting. Self is just as working class as Merton.
Will Self was hilarious here. Gooey stuff...Viking Helmets... I love him!
Prob the most fascinating show in Room 101's history. So many weird undercurrents of tension.
@herefordmsv Yeah, oddly enough he seemed to get touchy with him after the 13 minute mark in part 1. Paul tried to use the example of a disproportionately large cat to undermine Will's view on scale. Will quickly retorted and Paul seemed to take a huff. lol. All very trivial stuff yet apparently worth my typing this out.
@herefordmsv I don't think so. I think he's assumed a mock-abrasive jerk position to lend more fun to the thing. Self eats it up and doesn't miss a beat, don't you think? The effect, to me, is hilarious.
God bless both of them. The antagonism is fierce, but I think it spurred them both into being exceptionally funny on this occasion.

The audience in this episode began by laughing at all Paul Merton's jokes and finished by laughing at all Will Self's. Interesting.

Merton's so intimidated he's ruined the atmosphere with his petulant jealous attitude, and Self doesn't give the tiniest of shits. It's wonderful.

Will Self seems to have decided to conduct much of this interview in the style of Peter Cook..

@henrah1981 And you got that from the Russell Brand Show where he says that.

I'm glad I've seen this bloke outside of Shooting Stars. He's actually very funny and good with words which I haven't noticed before.

It's probably just me, but the way he speaks here sounds a bit like a mixture of Alan Davies and Arthur Smith... Great episode!

@simonmaxwellstewart Self isn't working class - he's about as middle class as you can get, he's a good geezer.
TheDensley7 9 months ago
@simonmaxwellstewart The class divide bit is where Self talks about his parents' parties and Merton says his parents never had parties.

@myopium I think Will functions on a higher, albeit, Will kind of level, which leaves Paul a little out of his depth.
Well, anything which makes you do something isnt trivial, its actually a very good thing and you in turn have made me type this.
We could go on forever like this....
