I made it within the first 2-3 weeks of opening the program for the first time. I had used 3DS Max for a year or so prior though so I did have some prior knowledge.
If you can get some decent introduction tutorials then there is no worries starting up with some easy stuff and just getting better as you learn. Though yea it does take up a lot of time if you want to make good quality stuff.
id say the level of skill needed for each program is about the same, its just a different interface really, but I would really recommend getting hold of some decent tutorials (or lessons) that can be a real help.

I tried blender, but after 2 hours of modeling, I modeled a stickman made of 20 pieces. it was very depressing for me. is maya easier?
