I scored this 115-113 7-5 Whittaker. And that's being generous toward Chavez. He did get robbed. And I'm white for the record. (If that means anything.)
In my opinion Whitaker won this fight by at least 8 rounds to 4 (116-112) and that's if one generously gives the 9th round to Chavez. If the 9th round could be scored even (the only one of the fight) then the score is 117-112. I remember as a kid back then that i wanted Chavez to win 'cos I hated Whitaker's antics in the ring but watching the fight objectively now, it's as clear as crystal that he won.

I don't understand why people get mad because Whitaker didn't stand and slug with Chavez that would be stupid you don't fight the fight of your opponent you force him to fight your fight to get the best of him and frustrate him which is what Whitaker did. That was a brilliant plan by Whitaker you could see the frustration on Chavez face as the fight went on from the early rounds until the later rounds.

Why should Chavez get extra credit for padding his record with journeymen? I'm sure Whitaker and many others could have done that too had they wanted to. Chavez was damn lucky to get this 'draw' here. Opposition beaten is close but favours Whitaker, and he had a virtuosity to his boxing which Chavez simply never had.

Chavez's speed, stamina, and power was amazing alongside his footwork I think he worked Pernell Whitaker great and think he was more superior than whitaker. But still respect the judge's decision towards a draw because they're both great athletes.

I only give Chavez credit in this fight for taking on Pernell, who is actually a little bigger than him, but Pernell had to lower down his weight a bit anyway to accommodate Chavez.
But footwork, accuracy and landing shots, speed, ring control, and actual BOXING (not just slugging and defenseless chasing like that of Chavez, who swore he would NOT do) was all Whitaker.

In my opinion Whitaker won this fight by at least 8 rounds to 4 (116-112) and that's if one generously gives the 9th round to Chavez. If the 9th round could be scored even (the only one of the fight) then the score is 117-112. I remember as a kid back then that i wanted Chavez to win 'cos I hated Whitaker's antics in the ring but watching the fight objectively now, it's as clear as crystal that he won.

He fought a lot of great fighters on the way alsolympic medalists.
