@Pioneerspirit111 Yes, slightly slow but detailed. Also, at the time I made the video I was new to the unit. BTW, I still own and use it and it works fine. I've had the unit about 2,.5 years now and it still runs on battery alone, which surprised me. Of course, you will not get the traffic function unless unit is connected to the charging cord. Also, since I made the video I've learned a lot and if I did another video with my newer Garmin (1350LMT) it would be quicker study.
i have this same exact model for quite a long time and i've never seen the traffic symbol and i've used the cord. i live in the sf bay area but i've used the gps in different cities and never received a traffic warning. i guess i'll have to contact garmin.
@daveheel i live in the eastbay and i remember when i first got the 265wt earlier this year, traffic did work. I think after updating the firmware it stopped working.
@bamboo510 my problem was i was using the existing cord from another garmin. i didn't use the traffic-specific cord but it worked as soon as i switched to the proper cord. the feature is nice but unreliable in the east bay.
I just got a 1490lmt from garmin, and watching this video, it tells me that it will only tell you there's traffic, but will it give you a detour? on the garmin site it shows that it will give you a detour and if so how?
@wgh999 I am not competent to answer the question as I am not familiar with TT version of traffic. I've now had the unit for a year and four months, and satisfied with the traffic service offered here in San Diego for the 265WT.
@brentfoto I heard Garmin is excellent for the US but over here in Europe TT is better. But from my experience with TT the traffic is questionable and why I'm currently considering jumping to Garmin :]
@brentfoto is traffic update really worth it? I heard for minor traffics the GPS will direct you to some backroad which ends up being much longer than the initial route or there could even be some delays on that road which will not show on GPS because it is a backroad. So far how has it been for u?
@6ft7inHIBread I don't find them to be at all obtrusive or bothersome. Most of the time I'm not even aware of them as they are posted in very small fonts.
on my garmin 265wt the traffic symbol isnt on the map when ever i use it. i have the receiver plugged in but still doesnt work. also the subscription is not disabled. i live in abbotsford, b.c., canada and the subscription is in the description.
@Sahota018 I'd first verify if traffic services are offered in your area by searching the Garmin website or by contacting them and making inquiry. If services are offered, then that is another issue, and you should contact them about it. Best wishes.
i dont know which to buy.. the 255wt or the 265wt. 265wt: i dont really use bluetooth, but the traffic reporting is cool and the 3D mapping is cool. 255wt: I love the car locator on this though.
btw, as you prolly can tell im new to GSP's but i need one cuz i get lost in my own city, but anyways i have a question. if ur routed someplace and u wanna see the time if you go to the main menu will it close you out of the directions to where your going?
Also, last question: I have noticed that while the unit is plugged into my car, if I turn it off using the top button and then turn it back on while it is still plugged in, the sound doesn't work anymore. Is this a glitch with all of them? or is there something wrong with my unit? Someone who has one, please try this and let me know.
@yodizzlefoshizzle -I haven't experienced that with my unit, which I've had for more than a year. But I have experienced where the sound of the voice sounds scrambled or voice goes haywire, but that is rare and occurs most in a particular location I frequent.
@yodizzlefoshizzle Mine also does that. I've had mine for several years now and it's always done that. I just turn it off and turn it back on again or use it without the voice.
So, anyway, the traffic icon doesn't pop up on my screen ever. I go into the settings and traffic is enabled, and it says I have a lifetime Navteq subscription, but I can't ever get that icon to come up on my screen. I thought........maybe there isn't any traffic reporting in my area, so I tried plugging in a route to California, where I know they have traffic reporting. Still nothing. would i have to actually be close in order to see the icon pop up? What is wrong?
@yodizzlefoshizzle -suggest you go to Garmin website to see if TR is available in your area. You must actually be in a traffic reporting area with the unit plugged into its charger plugged into cigar lighter or AC connection in your vehicle and the traffic icon should pop up. Sometimes it doesn't where there isn't much activity but during rush hours I've noticed it almost all the time.
I realize this post was over a year ago, and you might have a new GPS now or not remember as much about this one, but I had a couple of questions that I thought I'd ask, cause I haven't gotten any responses from any of the forums I've been to. If you can help me, great......if not, no harm in asking.
So here goes: First, I'm not sure if I just don't have any traffic reporting in my area or if it's not working properly. (I'll continue this in subsequent comments)
The 265 WT is discontinued and can no longer be purchased at BB. However, you can still find them online and at Macy's "snack vendor". I'm getting this to put in a 2008 Lincoln Navigator believe it or not.
I believe that Amazon still offers the 265WT. I don't think the unit has been discontinued but I could be wrong. Bluetooth-I think a lot depends upon your phone and reception area. The bluetooth function has recently been giving me some problems. I hardly use it because callers are presently unable to hear me but I can hear them. It's probably an easy fix but I haven't taken the time to look into it further as I have a new Plantronics Voyager 510 headset and that works very well for me.
Nice, i was wondering when/how the traffic kicks in looks like and behaves. This video summed it up. Thanks man. I just got the 255WT from BB for $180. I just use my digital camera USB cord to connect it to my computer and I downloaded the 3 Garmin voices from the free "Garmin Garage". Much better than listening to that robot man voice. I will try to update my map in a month or so also. They give you 1 free map update within 60 days of acquiring sat signals.
I bought this uni for $129.99 the day before yesterday. So far I am happy with this. This is my first GPS. Quick re-calculations too. I have used this only on the routes I am familiar with. I think this is good purchase. My only complain is it did not come with the USB to connect to the PC. A mini USB for this is at least $20.
That is pricey and took away the discount I received.
Quick question-- I am looking to get a new GPS, does this one tell you to, for example, to "stay left/right" when you're on a highway or road when the road is branching off in two directions?
THANK YOU! I could not figure out how to use the traffic option on my 265T. I didn't know it had to be connected to the car charger. Big help! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, it will reroute itself, it will 'recalculate' from wherever you are...sometimes I've experienced a recalculation that wastes some time as it hesitates to immediately direct you to do a U-turn when that would be most appropriate.
Thanx I have this exact model, and unfortunately the instructions in the box are in German, and the quick start booklet isn't detailed enough. Thanks for the vid!
Thankx for the vid. I have had this GPS for about 6 months (my first Gps). Sometimes it is slow, like if you want to change your route, or if you look for points of interest along your route, but most of the time it works well for navigation. I also use the bluetooth phone feature, and that has a few flaws. When a call is coming in a message appears on the screen (incoming call) and then has two. icons "Answer" "Ignore" however the "answer" button doesn't work. That sucks.
I've had a problem where the caller has been unable to hear me though I can hear them. I'm presently looking into that problem. The bluetooth function is rarely used by me as I have an ear bluetooth.
Thanks for taking the time to explain how the traffic works. I am shopping now for a GPS and have been looking closely at this one, as it was recommended by Consumer Reports.
You mean as long as you have the unit and the power cable. If loose the cable you to buy another one for $70 bucks or else you won't get the traffic feature on the unit.
Thanks for the info. The first thing I did when it came in yesterday was download the new map.
I'll be going on a road trip to middle of nowhere Missouri in about 2 weeks, then in about a month I'll be heading to the Seattle area. I'll be driving into Canada with it, so I hope the Canadian maps are accurate.
I live in the Norfolk, VA area and the traffic function works great.
You're welcome. I'm been in the State of Florida the last few days with my unit. Works great here (I'm usually in California). It's kind of cool to see the traffic function work in two different metropolitan areas, San Diego and DelRay Beach/Miami areas. There's a learning curve with the unit, you'll enjoy it more and more as you master it. Be sure to timely exercise the free upgrade if the software is not up to date. Go to the Garmin website for more information on that.
I should mention that the Traffic Icon (green circle containing the two cars) automatically changes color to yellow or apparently red when there is traffic on your route, so it may not be necessary to get to the icon 'Traffic on Route' in the first place! These are things you do not learn until you've had the unit for a while, but I wanted to pass it on to those interested.
It gives you the choice to 'Avoid' the traffic. If you don't choose to avoid you can continue along your route, but most times if there's a delay of more than a few minutes I choose to 'Avoid' and it works.
Thanks for your inquiry, and check out my Part II of this traffic reporting video.
how will you avoid it? does it ask you or the green button will turn red and then you can choose it? how does it work? i just bought a 1390T and still learning how to use it thanks
I think if you press the vehicle icon when it's yellow or red you'll get a largebutton in the next screen located bottom middle that says 'AVOID'. It may also come up if you go to the traffic map. You merely select that button and it will re-direct you. I wouldn't worry about finding it. If there's traffic on your route most times, if not all, that option will appear.
i thought its automtic.wel im stil learing how to use my1390T.
last nyt tried my gps going to kmart and i know how to go there i just wanna try where its gonna take me. so it a two lane the left is going to the highway and the right lane is going to kmart. but the gps didnt say to stay on the right lane so until the last sec i was on the left lane but since i know where kmart is,i switch lane to the right lane.and it really throws me,what if i dont knw where im going?i could easily lost track
Still on the learning curve. Give unit at least two or three weeks. Secondly, lane guidance costs more, and is available with higher-priced units-it may or may not be available with your unit. Third, and most important, do not rely solely on voice commands-look at the top part of the screen for navigation arrows, distances to turn, etc. so you will know when to get over. Don't get frustrated, you simply do not know what you're doing yet and you'll like unit more and more as time passes.
i think the model i got has the lane assist and junction view. that what is says on the box. it s a 1390T. oh well, i guess theyr right, they said that gps is good when you dont know where your going lol. my wife has a old model of garmin tha one that doesnt says the street name.but it is reliable too specially when we want to go somewhere weve never been. thanks. any vid update? like while your driving and using ur GPS? thank
It's not automatic-you have a choice to Avoid or not. You may choose to continue on original route because of distance or because you know of traffic snarls in your particular area that may clear swiftly.
Gee, makes you seasick to watch.

No on this particular unit, e.g., Nuvi 265WT, and it automatically activates upon first satellite acquisition.
brentfoto 2 years ago
I should mention that the Traffic Icon (green circle containing the two cars) automatically changes color to yellow or apparently red when there is traffic on your route, so it may not be necessary to get to the icon 'Traffic on Route' in the first place! These are things you do not learn until you've had the unit for a while, but I wanted to pass it on to those interested.
brentfoto 2 years ago

Still on the learning curve. Give unit at least two or three weeks. Secondly, lane guidance costs more, and is available with higher-priced units-it may or may not be available with your unit. Third, and most important, do not rely solely on voice commands-look at the top part of the screen for navigation arrows, distances to turn, etc. so you will know when to get over. Don't get frustrated, you simply do not know what you're doing yet and you'll like unit more and more as time passes.

It's not automatic-you have a choice to Avoid or not. You may choose to continue on original route because of distance or because you know of traffic snarls in your particular area that may clear swiftly.

If there is traffic on your route, does it automatically redirect you to a faster route?
