@kathyuk28 - The whole album is absolutely great. Compound the record company folding, Rick suffered a serious ATV accident which layed him up for nearly a year.. he got washed under. I think this whole album could be re-mixed and still be a big hit today..
Great song, great album. The verse has an accent on the 3rd beat which gives it a real raggae sound. Great example of inventive music from the 80s. It's also a great example of 80s video (well-filmed arty things going on for no reason while a guy in suit jacket plays guitar in a daft location) and a BAD mullet haircut.
listening to Rick Springfield cassettes with earphones was just the best--- musically great but technically perfect too. whoever produced for Rick did a 100% job. every song was ear candy.
I remember when this came out in high school. For two weeks, it seemed like one could not go 5 minutes without hearing this song. Then suddenly, it was gone. Taking into account that the record company shut down, it still seemed odd that a great song from a recognizable singer like Rick Springfield could just vanish so suddenly.
I've seen this video countless of times since it first came out and tonight was the first time I noticed the guitar. I'm always just looking at him. lol
Is it me, or does this song have a "reggae" style riff to it? The reggae riff and the bass line make this song so great. Again, as I have said before, he should re-release this. The only reason it didn't get the recognition it deserve was because 2 weeks after this was released, the record company folded and there wasn't any marketing to be had for this album. I was the assistant record buyer for a large chain store when this was released and whatever we had in the store flew out.
@kathyuk28 Hey -- I remember a version of this video that showed Randy Jackson playing bass -- answers a lot, doesn't it? I was disappointed this video didn't show him. This is a great song/video, huh.
I worked for Record Bar in the US during this time. That is exactly what happened to this album. You heard this song on the radio for about three weeks in 1988, then....nothing. No promo tour, no MTV contests or promos, no in store promo material after the first week, no follow up single, nothing. Not even many copies available after the first printing. The next time I saw a copy of this album was in 1995 in the $2 used bin at a record store.
@kathyuk28 The whole album is absolutely great. Compound the record company folding, Rick suffered a serious ATV accident which layed him up for nearly a year.. he got washed under. I think this whole album could be re-mixed and still be a big hit today..
@kathyuk28 Rick didn't go on tour for this album because just before the tour was supposed to start, he get hurt in an ATV accident, and could tour due to a broken collarbone,,,he couldn't hold his guitar.
@kathyuk28 This album didn't do well because Rick wasn't able to tour. Just before it was going to start, he was hurt in a ATV accident and because of a broken collarbone he couldn't hold his guitar
I'm a guy and think Rick is GREAT! I'm not gay and I'm not attracted to him, but I loved his music since high school. He's more of an idol than anything, and some of his songs take me back to my youth.
I'm sorry, I can't tell what he is actually saying in the background, but that doesn't sound like it. It almost sounds like something about a "false one" or something.
Does anyone know what he says in the background of the last verse's "It ain't no perfect life"? I can never make it out and its not included on any lyrics listing I can find.
Thanx 4 this great post! This should've been a bigger hit. It only peaked at #22. And as popular as he became, I still think he was underrated. Rick ROX!!!
Many people don't know the story behind this song. Rick Springfleld was headed toward becoming a superstar as a teen idol. His father got sick and Rick stayed in Australia to take care of him, even though his father told him to go to America and tour. When his father died...Rick became depressed for many years, well over a decade. This song was a reaction to that, as well as losing the love of his life, Linda Blair, to another man, that would be Rick James. His heart was completely broken.
YOU don't know the story behind this song. This song was a reaction to becoming a father and having a family. Watch the Oprah interview, or his BIOGRAPHY interview. God, these people.
I'm so upset, I was supposed to go see him in New Jersey last night. I have Fibromyalgia and the weather didn't cooperate. I was stuck in bed for a week. Next time. If you want to learn more about this guy, let me know. Check out "Affair of the Heart" but the bang of the live drum version from 1985. I think I favourited it.
Uh.....that was the point of my comment. Good music is good music. It's universal & not racial. So that was my original point. Plus, I was looked at crazy from where I live because of the music I listen 2. So I wish they can read your comment. I already understand.
Ill admit it. I am quite straight, was a head banger back in the day, and loved every one of Rick's albums. His modern stuff isnt bad either, even though age is starting to limit his voice. He is a great musician, with a feel for the ladies.
Rick Springfield has a "Ablum" called "Sahara Snow" it is a Harder Edge Album and even I was surprised to find out it was RICK SPRINGFIELD. You can probably find it on E-bay and the last song on the Album which is called "Lust" will surprise you! It did me!

Horns are Jerry Hey and Garry Grant. Great playing!! Great arrangement by Jerry. I think it may be Bill on trombone, but never did ask Jerry.
