how many people are going to post this same lame video. If you are going to race another boat you have to TELL THEM ITS A RACE, so they can pull their sail all the way up. No contest, the trimaran would eat the windsurfer for breakfast, and then sail all day and all night.
Nothing would happen with an iSonic or a speed needle instead of this Formula board. The wind seems around 15-20kts and at these windspeed a formula would leave no chance to a slalom or speed board. It's a shot for a Bayer commercial, it was not a proper race...
a "standard slalom" equiped windsurf goes at the same speed of that racing trimaran.. i wonder what would've happen if it was a 30 liters board on flat water instead of that one.. ;)
@AiriPsy the video looks like the windsurfer is effortlessly gliding over the water - that is almost correct - only that formula windsurfing is quite a physically intense activity, even if it is primarily a technical sport ;-)
It was a Starboard Formula 175 with Gun Sails M7 11sqm sail, it was filmed around 2002/2003. They were doing close to 30kts. I think it was also filmed for some Bayer commercials.
It would be as "deprasing" as a 1 million dollar super car would be beaten by a 20 thousand dollar superbike... But lets face it, the crew on the trimaran did travel much more conforable and didn't face the hazzards of a "catapult" :D
That does not seem true, looking at the wind angles. Formula would have an advantage around 10-15kts of wind. Well below or well above the trimaran would leave it with no chance. ( in low wind the board would not like to get planing, in higher wind the sea state could be a limiting factor. On very flat water with good wind the formula would hit a speed limit of around 28-30 kts, with a highly skilled, competiitive surfer only.
Yep, anyone with a "clew" would notice the reef in the Tri's sails. This link is a pretty cool race.
Search you tube for "Kite vs Moth vs 49er" if you want to watch a cool race.

windsurf speed record is 49.09 knots and trimaran speed record is 47 knots
so it proves that windsurf is faster than a trimaran

Note the tri is heavily reefed down & barely stretching her legs.

@compaq2525 - I guess the trimaran "won" because the race was sponsored by Bayer ;-)

but you cant even imagine adrenaline feeling of windsurfing ;)
Gerapa0 2 years ago 3
Sure, I agree...but the surfboard is easier to park and it goes on the roof of your car when you want to call it a day...!
DonPedro1990 2 years ago
I agree! Im in the thoughts of buying an 2002 Fanatic Falcon 100 with 9.8 and 12.5 m2 sails. Then its me against the trimaran =)
Johanoeberg 2 years ago
Sounds like a fast combo. Just don't sail in front of the trimaran and the slow down:)
DonPedro1990 2 years ago
@carazo321 The Tri has the main raised 3/4 way up and they're luffing they're main. the diliberaley slowed down for the video.

windsurfer by a mile, especially since he was getting all the tris dirty wind
xcrimson1234567890 3 years ago
the windsurfer was even with the trimaran, no dirty wind at all
mikesaldi 3 years ago
Haha, the surfer was even because of the dirty wind, otherwise he would have been far ahead.
