Seriously, take the keffiyeh off. Wear it only if you are actually in the Middle East and in a situation that would require its wear, or...change your name to Arafat.
I like how everyone is saying he's just going through the motions. It's probably one of the first few times he's seen that chord sheet in front of him. Improvising of a chord progression like that isn't as easy as just playing E minor pentatonic, occasionally switching to G major pentatonic. That's an erratic chord pattern with a lot of different modes and altered chords in that. I reckon only a handful of professional guitarists nowadays would be able to play over that with only a few bum notes
@Th1sWasATriumph is a scrub, just listen to his videos.. but even the greatest musicians on earth could possibly learn some sort of lesson from some dipshit like this guy. Not many can grasp that. But oh no, Th1sWasATriumph is too good for shit like that.

No it is not, any musician knows that to play anything fast regardless of style or instrument you have to start very slow ( adagissimo ) and gradually increase BPM's until you can play it faster AND accurately ( presto ). Having played for 35 years and studied music I think I would know. And when you practice you always start slow, unless you want CTS.

learn the basics and follow your heart and don`t listen to theory dweebs who have nothing else.
I bet dimeola relies less on theory and more on timing and feel. ``can you play between the beat that is what he would ask someone not do you know what a sus 7 flat 5 is```I know something you don`t know`` is what theory dweebs are all about. Many very talented musicians don`t rely on theory.
That is only true if you are using a single scale on a tune in the same key or hardly any modulation like La Bamba.
If that's what you play, be my guest.
Try to play on Pinocchio or say, Giant Steps using your so called "basics" and you'll probably have a laugh yourself trying to figure out what key the tune is in.
P.S. There's nothing misterious about a sus7 or any other single chord. Limits come out when you have more than 3 of them in the same tune, modulating every bar.
@sk1972 you would definitely not have said that if you knew any theory yourself. Theory isn't about looking at intervals chords keys etc.. Its about learning how to apply that theory to your playing.
When you really study theory it ends up becoming part of the language you develop on your instrument, i.e. the lines/licks you play, the chords you play how and why where and when. You see and hear things differently so you approach them differently as well broadening your playing
@sk1972 lol you'll have a grand musical carreer focknuts
incredible what stupidity can make people say. I'll bet $100 you worship some douchebag friend of yours who's slightly better than you, and he's the one who told you theory is shit. "oh if jimmy says it, he's so good! fuck theory!"
whether the above is true or not, you're a sad little fellow
That's a Dean Hardtail from their custom shop, I have one myself and they're very nice instuments. I had the pleasure of doing a master's class with mr. Di Meola around 25 years ago and was suprised to learn he didn't really grasp much in terms of music theory. That said, he still impressed me as one heck of a great player. We all learn our craft and style in our own way and that's just a part of what makes the guitar such a wonderful instrument to learn. Seams like he's still going strong.
@couerl The only reason I knew that was because I am Paul Reed Smith fanatic. They are great sounding guitars and more and more artists are starting to play them. I would love to get my hands on some of the newer models, but they are just very expensive.
ok...so i was lookin at vic wooten who is Bass! and it takes me to some douche that rush can do better...shit maybe even santana...no offense..but youtube fooled me.. sorry folks
I appreciate good musicianship as well...This guy is a great guitar player in that hes a clean player...There isnt any emotion in the music from what Im hearing...just a bunch of notes that say nothing.
@TravelersTale I thought his playing was very dynamic. It moved up and down and made you feel the intensity come and go. I think people who can't play clean and quick say they play with emotion instead.
@RickyBellMusic You sound like one of those who goes to shows and holds up score cards to the guitarist after each song-your comment was fine til ya had to throw in your shitbag opinion that made no sense to anyone but you and 3 other 'fretboard finesse freaks'-y'all can take a walk
@blitzshriek999 It makes perfect sense. Guitarists use the word emotion and feeling as a crutch. When talking about Al, he's nimble and quick but he doesn't over use it. He's got voicing and scale changes that if taken completely away from the rhythm could stand alone as a song.
From each guitarist, there is something to be learned. I guess to a slow brain, every note above quarter notes at 120bpm sounds like speed metal. (less commenting, more practicing)
@RickyBellMusic Do you play? And whats ur thought on Neil Young-Thurston Moore-Carlos Santana-Adam Jones etc-people who avoid the trappings and egos that come with overschooling and just want to get down to the basis of lettin that soul rip-think they're jealous of the likes of Al?Just sayin, there are varying degrees of being emotional with playin(howevr, thx for ur opinion sorry if i was rude bfore)
@blitzshriek999 Spare me. Neil Young? You must be joking. A great songwriter but who mentions him as a good guitarist never mind among the greats. Carlos Santana has been playing Karaoke guitar for near enough 30 years. Al DiMeola keeps pushing the creativity bar. He may not be the nicest person but he is among the guitar greats, no question about that. Al DiMeola has more to offer on the guitar then all those four put together x100.
@darkoanton5 stay with me dude. u brought up the word 'emotion' and i was referring to THAT alone- bogging down the subject in order to win an argument doesn't interest me in the least-ur stock full of nothing more than inflammatory OPINIONS-and b4 u continue to dis rock players, let me say ive bn playing for 31 yrs-it was seeing andres segovia that made me want to pick up the damn thing to begin with...adios
@blitzshriek999 Spare me because all you rockers come up with to shoot down great players like DiMeola is to say that all they are is technical and offer nothing emotionally. That's complete nonsense. So bu the players you mention are not anywhere close to Al DiMeola as guitarists. Personally, I like Neil Young's music. He's a great songwriter and a unique performer and I enjoy seeing his live shows.
@darkoanton5 To me and most well rounded people I know, the aforementioned players are better! Of course, i realize I'm saying this aware of being completely out of my element-I swear I didn't come here to start shit, kinda stumbled on it-that being said, Michael Hedges, Stanley Jordan, Robert Johnson, Django Reinhardt, all among this 'rocker's' faves-all real, no dumbass ego that is all too easy to see in guys like a.d., vai and malmsteem, to name a few...no offense
@blitzshriek999 We are not talking about Di Meola's persona. And yes you did come here to start shit. I've yet to stumble upon a Neil Young or Carlos Santana video where somebody says that they are not as good as Di Meola or McLaughlin. I've seen your type of post far too often.
@darkoanton5 I did not come here to start shit. But I will sign off letting u know what a narrow-minded pathetic pussy u are, desperate to win a fucking argument that wasn't ur discussion to begin with. You are a dime a dozen egomaniac bitch. to hell with u
@darkoanton5 I did not come here to start shit. But I will sign off letting u know what a narrow-minded pathetic pussy u are, desperate to win a fucking argument that wasn't ur discussion to begin with. You are a dime a dozen egomaniac bitch. to hell with u
@darkoanton5 Thank God I only meet pathetic hero worshipper twits like u on YT -spewing out the kind of self serving pseudo intellectual crap u hear in some coffee house-admit it, u are ONE LONELY SAP..speakin of egos, whatsa matter, did i bruise yours? Stay out of the kitchen, ya obviously cant take the heat :D
@blitzshriek999 I'm no hero worshipper. But I don't go around trashing great players on youtube. You are one sad individual because even a great player wouldn't trash Di Meola. You are one sad individual. Go back to your Rock Band video game you wannabe be guitar critic.
You think you comments bother. lmao You really think highly of yourself. Did you happen to get a good fortune cookie the other day? Is that why you're feeling so good about yourself. Go look in a mirror and cry you schmuck.
@darkoanton5 Look, you sad idiot. You are conveniently skipping over the points I am making to, again, win a fucking argument, rather than broaden an outlook on music-your dumbass fanaticism won't allow for u to see what I'm even getting at. Sorry I wasted a moment of my life on talking to you, never again
@darkoanton5 that pissed me off- "and yes you did come on here to start shit"-ur a smug prick, to top it all off. Ur wrong about that-but u know it all, eh? Hate to name call, I really do-but u sir, are a JERK

@SquigglyJ0e thats what my teacher said to me then he was rather speechless when he saw how fast i adapted his so called jazz theory and improvisation
I act impressed too when one of my students plays fast licks studied by heart all night, then I flip in a few new changes to remind them without openly disregarding their desperate efforts to look cool, that music is a language which has to tell a story (talking real fast and pauseless doesn't make a story interesting, typing fast doesn't define a good writer). From the very 1st lesson I teach that learning by heart is an exercise not a solo.
@BobQwack i agree with you, i can see you know youre stuff my teacher has a similar aproach but it just gets to me when some players make jazz or classical music out to be a impossible feat to play when really its all about the effort you put into youre craft and learning the musical language and finding youre own voice on the instrument
Music is a language, some languages are objectively harder and more complicated than others. More complete as a studies cv. Jazz doesn't count more nor is it more popular (sadly charts say I am right). It requires more. Just a fact. Modern jazz has an intricate grammar, absolutely not for everybody. It's not a matter of taste, rock can sound good too. Even some metal (really dont like) players can be interesting. They just have much less material to work through.
I sense you like rock, but you are taking jazz lessons, arent you.
That means you might be on the right path, regardless the style you will one day express (your own, hopefully and I sincerely wish you so).
Modern jazz is not impossible, it just requires much more.
I don't have time to teach anymore, I'd skip tours and thats not likely. but my line was: never choke students initiative, but teach em not to play the same thing the same way twice.
Classical and traditional music both require reiteration as a general approach, because one of their main intents is historical preservation. Playing a composition as it was. There is still much room for interpretation and sometimes framed improvisation.
Unquestionably a different path tho.
Still far from choosing Liszt's Flight of the Bumblebee played on 3 parallel distortion pedals as a reference for tecnhical skills. It's only a way to wreck a great composition.
@BobQwack What, they get the hint to find a different tutor that doesn't disparage what they want to learn? I agree that mindlessly playing fast is pretty meaningless to me, but at the same time, you can't impose that on someone.
@SquigglyJ0e "The whole frightful responsibility for this terrible Thirty Years' War [1618-1648] must rest upon the [Holy Roman] Emperor Ferdinand II, and his teachers, rulers, and bosom friends -- the Sons of Loyola [i.e., the Jesuit Order]."
@SquigglyJ0e "Today they [i.e., the Jesuits] are stronger in the United States than they ever were in any of the countries of Europe which expelled them as a menace to the government." (1912)
@SquigglyJ0e "Above all I have learned from the Jesuits. And so did Lenin too, as far as I recall. The world has never known anything quite so splendid as the hierarchical structure of the [Roman] Catholic Church. There were quite a few things I simply appropriated from the Jesuits for the use of the [Nazi] Party.
@SquigglyJ0e "The Jesuits...are simply the Romish army for the earthly sovereignty of the world in the future, with the Pontiff of Rome for emperor...that's their ideal. ...It is simple lust of power, of filthy earthly gain, of domination -- something like a universal serfdom with them [i.e., the Jesuits] as masters -- that's all they stand for. They don't even believe in God perhaps."
Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881; famous Russian novelist)
@TravelersTale People feel emotion from different styles of music. Some people prefer slow playing and think it has more "emotion", others don't. How do you define emotion in music though? Just because he isn't playing slow and making goofy faces doesn't mean he isn't putting emotion into it. I'm sure he feels emotion from playing it and plenty of others feel it from listening to it. I'm sure he wouldn't still be doing this after 40 plus years if he didn't.
Long solos get boring after a while no matter how good it is...this playing doesnt have much emotion or feel...every note sounds the same to me...Guitar solos are way to long considering it isnt saying much.
Depends on how much you like MUSIC and not MTV ,quick shot bursts of kiddie pop.Sorry, but that is only YOUR opinion! The nuances mean something to an appreciative ear and usually possess more musicality in it than an undeveloped little pop-troid "hit"!.
One thing that many people forget is that music is subjective; technical proficiency is fine, but it doesn't mean that someone will like or dislike them.
Di Meola always sounds a bit "plastic" to me..........I prefer the poet of Mc Laughlin o must funki feel of Scoffield........And of course Mr Metheny colors........
HOW REMARKABLE - that this absolute virtuoso should have been SO connected to and influenced by the legendary Chick Corea... what a musical 'marriage made in heaven'!!!
Muisc is not a competition!! It there to be enjoyed..either as a listener or as a player..The fact the someone may prefer one kind of music to another really does not matter..This does not mean that one kind of music is better or worse, simply different. Robert Johnson was not one of the most technical guitarists. BUT what he brought to the music world. he was a treasure so behold. Simlar to beethoven but in a different genre.
Wow I love Al di Meola and his string muted sound ,in his Intructional Video he said to always pick every note, well for im that is perfect. I also love Allan Holdsworth and his sound. Allan maybe picks 2 notes out of 10. Thats how he gets his awesome flowing legato sound. All these players are great and unique. Its pointless to compare and say one is better than the other.
Hendrix, Clapton, and Winter are all good blues and rock guitarists. Pass, Montgomery, and Christian are good jazz guitarists. de Lucia, Rosenberg, and La Grene are good latin guitarists. They all fill our hearts in certain ways so I guess comparisons don't matter. Let's all be thankful for the diversity.
Once, Miles Davis said to a reporter: "There's not such a thing as THE BEST in art, the best writer, the best chitarist, the best painter and so on. You might say there ARE the best... Me included."
EAR CANDY..LOVE it stop the debating They, you, everyone else,me and others we are all great players and isn't subjective..One mans taste is another mans garbage..But I love all music..except polka( I know someone else loves it ) ..
@vershaki It was a meeting in Wroclaw, about 6 346 guitarists gathered in one place to play "Hey Joe". When it was done, many artists played on stage.
dudes good at the style of playing but nothing to get a sandy vagina over. most people dont even give a shit about this dude. not my idea of a good time sitting around drinking wine and listening to this elevator music.
dudes good at the style of playing but nothing to get a sandy vagina over. most people dont even give a shit about this dude. not my idea of a good time sitting around drinking wine and listening to this elevator music.
Too much talk about Vai and Hendrix. Hendrix will always be considered the best because no one was ever as effortlessly fluid as he was. And Vai? What about Zappa himself? If you've never heard of "Friday Night in San Francisco" with Dimeola, McLaughlin, and Delucia, check it out. No effects, just pure shred put to the wood.
@occams99 Hendrix was effortless to me too, but my roommate has been playing 17 years and I'm amazed at how relaxed and effortless he is. But he probably will never achieve the reputation and legendary status of Hendrix, Van Halen, Rhoads, Di Meola regardless of how much he plays or the amount of effort to be a better guitarist. Anyways, that Friday Night in San Franciso is an amazing album, and I consider it a leganday recording. Les Paul was a legend but not my favorite guitarist.
Cheeseburgers are better than tacos!! And Tacos blow away pizza!!, but no! Pizza kicks ass over spaghetti.......No way dude!!!!!!!!!!Spaghetti is WAAAAYYYY overrated!!!!!....fuckin idiots..God DAMN I'm tired of fuckin idiots!.
Saying one great guitarist is better or worst than some other great guitarist is an immature pastime. People who argue Hendrix isn't as good as Vai might as well be arguing Segovia isn't as good as Joe Pass. They need to grow up a little, stop being so egotistical about their own preferences and know that a true musician still recognises greatness in another even when they may not be a keen fan of their musical genre. Is blue a better colour than red or is yellow better than both of them?
@HandyBendyGandhi yes you re right and it happens differently : you need mac laughlin at a moment and need scofield at another moment. it is a mistake to think a musician is better than another, it is simply your life and your state of mind which make you prefer to listen a musician rather than another one at a specify moment or during a specify period and another musician at another period.
Wow! I didn't know Jeff Goldblum could play guitar! And Paul Giamatti on the accordian!

@RickyBellMusic You sound like one of those who goes to shows and holds up score cards to the guitarist after each song-your comment was fine til ya had to throw in your shitbag opinion that made no sense to anyone but you and 3 other 'fretboard finesse freaks'-y'all can take a walk
blitzshriek999 2 weeks ago
@blitzshriek999 It makes perfect sense. Guitarists use the word emotion and feeling as a crutch. When talking about Al, he's nimble and quick but he doesn't over use it. He's got voicing and scale changes that if taken completely away from the rhythm could stand alone as a song.
From each guitarist, there is something to be learned. I guess to a slow brain, every note above quarter notes at 120bpm sounds like speed metal. (less commenting, more practicing)
RickyBellMusic 2 weeks ago 3
@RickyBellMusic Do you play? And whats ur thought on Neil Young-Thurston Moore-Carlos Santana-Adam Jones etc-people who avoid the trappings and egos that come with overschooling and just want to get down to the basis of lettin that soul rip-think they're jealous of the likes of Al?Just sayin, there are varying degrees of being emotional with playin(howevr, thx for ur opinion sorry if i was rude bfore)
blitzshriek999 2 weeks ago
@blitzshriek999 Spare me. Neil Young? You must be joking. A great songwriter but who mentions him as a good guitarist never mind among the greats. Carlos Santana has been playing Karaoke guitar for near enough 30 years. Al DiMeola keeps pushing the creativity bar. He may not be the nicest person but he is among the guitar greats, no question about that. Al DiMeola has more to offer on the guitar then all those four put together x100.

blitzshriek999 2 weeks ago
@blitzshriek999 Spare me because all you rockers come up with to shoot down great players like DiMeola is to say that all they are is technical and offer nothing emotionally. That's complete nonsense. So bu the players you mention are not anywhere close to Al DiMeola as guitarists. Personally, I like Neil Young's music. He's a great songwriter and a unique performer and I enjoy seeing his live shows.

I smell another slow handed beginner worshipping pure speed....
Students admire speed in itself, cos it can take years of practice.
OR, it may come in a week of hardcore exercise (on one tune).
Impressive for neophites, but slip in a few modulations and the average sunday metal kid will turn into a speechless puppet, showing all his limits.
Al Di Meola is not such kid, he can play on intricate harmonies too, ways slower fcourse.
Speed is just one way to express one thing.
Music is a language.

They normally get the hint.
BobQwack 1 week ago 14
@BobQwack i agree with you, i can see you know youre stuff my teacher has a similar aproach but it just gets to me when some players make jazz or classical music out to be a impossible feat to play when really its all about the effort you put into youre craft and learning the musical language and finding youre own voice on the instrument
ARAUZ1625 1 week ago 2
@ARAUZ1625
Thanks.
BobQwack 1 week ago 12
@ARAUZ1625
Unless u play classical or trad. fcourse

No effects, just pure shred put to the wood.
occams99 1 month ago
@occams99 Hendrix was effortless to me too, but my roommate has been playing 17 years and I'm amazed at how relaxed and effortless he is. But he probably will never achieve the reputation and legendary status of Hendrix, Van Halen, Rhoads, Di Meola regardless of how much he plays or the amount of effort to be a better guitarist. Anyways, that Friday Night in San Franciso is an amazing album, and I consider it a leganday recording. Les Paul was a legend but not my favorite guitarist.
