Villon...
There are a good handful of, erm, "arty" films that have been well received by the critics that I would call boring. Aguirre is not one of them. This is a masterpiece.
Particular scenes like the ones where Aguirre proclaims he is the wrath of god, the scene where... that one chick runs off into the woods, presumably because she sees that as a better fate than her current path, the monkeys... and etcetera, literally gave me chills while watching them. Most of all, though, I liked the score set to Herzog's images. His camera lingers on the trees and the river as you might see in a Tarkovsky film. I didn't enjoy them for "artistic importance" ...
but because of how they made me feel, and that is enough. I had also seen a doc on the making of this film, and obviously heard about it, so while watching, I was even more amazed at what this film accomplishes -- that defends the gags, I guess, but I didn't have a problem with them during the film anyways.
I tried to speak unpretentiously. If you'd like, I COULD give you the pretentious explanation for why this is a good movie... ;)
Now you assume that if I like good cinema I'll have to like this film... and it's not like that. I like good cinema, but I could not stand Aguirre. Probably because, in the end, the story (the "plot") is... well, inexistent, almost. It's just a bunch of people going down a river and dying while Aguirre goes crazier.
It might be an artistic masterpiece -- I could appreciate that while watching it --, but I lost interest in it when I realised that there was no narrative coherence and no rythm.
I just assume that anyone that likes good cinema would more than likely like this. It has a plot in the sense that it is an "incident" that occured (whether fact or fiction) at that time and at that place. You use the word artistic (I don't know what that word means honestly). There is a "feeling" captured by the film that seems authentic (which is rare) it sort of puts you there with them (reason I like it). Is a plot really necessary....does your life have a plot......
My life is not a story I would like to see, neither would be anyone's. A story is not real. Reality is not a story. A story seeks to create a reponse from the viewer/reader, it wants to create emotions, propose ideas... and for the viewer to have a complete and pleasant experience, the film or book needs to have rythm, structure, narrative...
I really can't pick 10 up. I happen to have bad selective memory. Right now I can't think of the best film I've ever seen. I'd need to use a list to remember, and I'm not really on the mood.
But as far as I can recall now, "Letters from Iwo Jima", "the Lion in Winter", Brannagh's "Henry V", Coppola's "Dracula", "Cabaret", "The Eagle has landed", "Shutter Island", "Gangs of New York"...
You have a point. I watched this after seeing the actual film, to recall better of some moments. I didn't dislike the film entirely, I liked some parts, but, overall, I was bored most of the time. I can't help it. I would have liked to enjoy it, but I couldn't.
I ask myself too why people go to videos about things they don't like and then comment against it (like the neverending debate between Spaniards and Latin Americans about which dubbing is better, ours or theirs). I have my answer now.
Interested to know whether you liked a film I have on the top of my pc at this very minute "No country for old men".
Similar to Aguirre in the sense that it too has no real plot...guy's a drug dealer...money stolen....wants it back....to the bitter end, this film doesn't even have any real artistic appeal to it, a lot of gratuitous violence in it...generally considered an excellent film. Again sort of an incident type of film.
"Incident" films like "Aguirre", "No Country For Old Men", "Zodiac" or "The Good Shephard" are void for me. They don't tell a story, they just show the viewer a moment in a realistic way, and reality is good if you live it, but if you have to "see" it from the outside, you'll realise how boring it can be. Film don't show the main characters while they iron their clothes, cook or sleep.
I didn't like all those films I said avobe, "incident" films. They bore me.
What a brilliant film this is. I saw it once on television in the UK, and that was 4-5 years ago. It is hardly ever broadcast here.

Do you really think that the small gags like the one with the long arrows are signs of masterpiece?
I'm sure you'll find a fancy way to defend those gags (among many other things for which I consider this film to be awful), but speak honestly.

@Ennio444 Well, different strokes for different folks.
Just curious, what motivates you to go to videos of movies you dislike? I only look up stuff I like on youtube.
