heat lightning is trippy man, tons of lightning, barely any thunder, it gets really hot then really cold on and off, suddenly mega windy, then BAM storm gone. it was so weird, and in the middle of a school football game too.
Last night I watched a 2 hour spectacular display of 'heat lightening' as it passed to the south of me (near Notre Dame Indiana). No thunder, no rain, no 'storm winds', just a fantastic show!
This is lightning w/o the thunder right? Because I think the same thing has happened here (northern Illinois) for the past few nights. I can't see the bolts though, just lights everything up.
I saw this here in NJ but it wasn't that much I live across a park so I was there and i was gonna stay there a little longer but then this bright big flash of pink lightning made a crack in the sky winds were strong so I went home and watched the lightning from my window that's my story thanks 4 reading
@scooterinnc84 yeah it is weird.... not only are we having these lightning storms, but we just recently went through that massive tornado outbreak. Its almost like we are getting weather patterns that usually only happen in the Midwest
@fett1184 it was really fun to watch.... its just a shame that there probably wont be another one anytime soon..... and I live in Sanford, NC which is about 1 hour outside of raliegh and it lasted hours
@comebackkidx95@fett1184 just actually saw heat lightning leaving Mocksville Nc, going down I40 towards clemmons nc, which is just a couple hours from you. Anyways, we hardly ever get intense lightning like this like they do in the midwest, and it was freaking me out, and it looked at one point like fireballs were being thrown down at an angle, and it was orange and exploded like a fire work. It was fun, and we prolly won't see one soon. This was a couple hours ago.

Im a California resident, just happened to be driving on I80 back to Omaha after visiting family in Lincoln when this storm hit. Was pretty intense....
several times in my life i see heat lightning and i would always predict a severe thunderstorm to hit the area, most recently was during the summer i was umpiring a softball tournament and had to postpone the game due to the frequency of the lightning and a bunch of parents from the home league was givin me shit then a bolt struck the highway 2 blocks away and almost had a heart attack

Second lightning (and that's all so called heat lightning is) is hotter than the surface of the sun. So how is something that hot going to make it cooler. It probably got cooler because the storm creating the lightning is a cooler front moving in.
when i was a kid in indian this was common in the summertime. just before dark it was really welcome. it burns off the heat and makes the evening cooler. it was spectacular. some morons say its not really doing that. i know better.
You are SO luck to lightening like that I wish I could get lightening here in Lake Placid NY. But this year I haven't seen even lightening in storms for it to call it self a lightening storm and makes sick! maybe I sould move there!!!

Hell, we HAD NO HORIZON for the trees. If it ever occured right over you then you would stop believing wikipedia. it seemed to work well, the humiditiy and heat dissipated somewhat after that. it was always a welcome sight.
@nomadnametab I live in illinois and see the same thing. It is a thunderstorm. Lightning is caused when by a thunderstorm cell sucking up heat and humidity. And i didnt read this on wikipedia, i learned it in school. I do this shit for a living. It wont let me post the link. Go to google and search for "heat lightning myth"
@oldfacefull I know what i am talking about. Heat alone WILL NOT cause lighting. You need an unstable air mass, heat, humidity, and alot of updraft. AKA a thunderstorm cell.

We had such a storm pass east of us in northern netherlands last night.
It was freaking amazing. Ive never seen something like this. Constant flashing, but complete silence. I loved it.
