What to improve education for more children? Take 'No Child Left Behind' and, please, remove all of the teenage drug dealers, gang bangers, thugs, etc. LEAVE THEM BEHIND. Then teachers can save the students who really want to learn.
After graduating in a public high school i say destroy the department of education, but do not destroy the federal student aid it provides for college students
@unknown1994ish Colleges raise their tuition so they can get more money from the government in the form of federal student aid. The cost of college education has inflated even faster than gasoline. If not for federal aid, college tuition would be a lot cheaper.
What they need to do is quit doling out so much money to students going to for-profit schools. They're scam artists who use predatory marketing techniques to get the poorest students who they KNOW will get money from the DOE to enroll, give them a usually subpar education, and send them out with tons of debt & a practically useless degree. The reason the DOE put out so much money is BECAUSE of these for-profit schools who enroll ANYONE.
When I was a kid there was NO Dept. of Education, and American students led the world in all areas of academics. Since it's establishment, American schools and quality of education has seadily declined. D.O.E...what a joke. Let's go back to what works.
I've been through school during the reign of the department of education and there is no balance at all. All we did was study for these tests. the worst part was that they are piss easy, and your mind starts to drift.
the funny part is that schools have specialized so much that when you're a senior and you passed all the standardized tests, they have nothing for you to do. we sat there in class and talked for an entire school year.
The UMASS professor... hey we don't have a National Standards board with our Universities and they are world class. He makes it sound like if we have some law that requires standards.
18 out of the to 20 universities are from the United States. Why because people can choose where they want to go to college.
We dont need standardized education programs or whatever that sounds like. Education should be invested through out the continent without government's regulations or management. Public schools should only be done in local level and controlled by parents and school's teachers/administrators. That makes education free and secure, not by federal funded through forcing everyone's money to pay for it. You cannot socialist education. The history will tell you from Fed.Banks, SSN, taxation, wars, etc!!
Look. I come from Oklahoma. We have some of the worse test scores and some of the most disrepaired schools in the nation, I view my tenure in Oklahoma Public Schools as one of the most abysmal times of my life, and we could CERTAINLY use federal money and hell- I would say the Fed would be better at running our schools than the state in this very rare case.
But I still want to see the Department of Education in flames.
The federal gov't CANNOT and will not ever successfully manage LOCAL k-12 schools. It's just not gonna happen. That's why it at least needs to go back to the states and hopefully then give full control back to the local and county governments, NOT the federal. We've seen full well that one size does not fit all.
I mean, even liberal old Europe has vouchers for education!! And it's not a rarity in some countries like Belgium, either.
I couldn't agree more. The Feds waste to much money and are quite frankly hurting our local schools. The power needs to return to our local elected leaders that have children in our local schools.
we have alot of students who are spoiled, stupid, and sadly, are doomed to failure in the free market, that is why the government is growing to a point where stupid kids can turn into good communists, counting on the government for cradle to grave benefits, no need to think, just vote democrat at every election. This is also why the Dem's love it when 20 million people sneak in from Mexico and South America, poorly educated people largely follow the handout train, and reward the handers out...
All I do in my classes are prepare for the AP exams...Those aren't even the standardized tests. In Maryland we take "High School Assessments" and they're a joke. Some students still don't pass them, because they are simply promoted to the next grade level so they are not "left behind."
Its no surprise that someone who benefits from federal education dollars would choose to argue for more federal education dollars. Sorry Christian but the free market would cut your salary.
The Dept. of Education is like a financial blackhole. Money goes in and nothing comes out. Burn it! Burn it all! Just imagine; a big wrecking ball slaming through the walls of that building and all the little tiny pieces scatter everywhere. I could jack off to that.
Stop having that Christian guy on. He makes my blood boil. Seriously, how similar to the USSR do we have to get before this guy stops advocating socialism?
So his whole point is, without the government we wouldn't have a national standard? What about the SAT or ACT, or countless other private companies that would make their own tests?
At the end, was she making fun of Dan Mitchell's free market principles on health care or simply pointing out that Dan & Christian disagree completely on health care?
America is screwing itself over & it's been happening for decades.

Not only is the Dept. of Ed. ineffective and wasteful,
IT'S UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
freesk8 2 years ago 5
And the irony is, that's WHY it's unconstitutional in the first place.
So your statement is like saying, "Not only is theft unproductive and counter to a thriving society - it's AGAINST THE LAW!"
IRONMANAustralia 2 years ago
Exactly. It is a shame that people in the states have so little knowledge of or care for the Constitution that is so valuable.
This is why we are slowly losing our liberties here.

That says it all. End the Dept. of Education in DC and Sacramento. School vouchers to the parents. Let them decide how to educate their children.
