I agree somewhat. I think Pride Fighters are very good the only flaw is not many are good with the bjj and wrestling. Instead of trying to submit as well they just try and get the tko or ko, which is why you don't see gomi try and submit people really and florian submitted him.

Gomi is one of the most over rated mma fighters. If he fought in the UFC he would lose half his bouts i.e loss to Diaz, Penn. His record is sugar coated with a ton of punching bags. He fights with the japanese promters so he can avoid losses. If he was a top fighter he would demand to fight the best. But he never does. Great fighter but not even a top five light weight..Pound for Pound..give me a break.
The irony is, both Penn and Gomi have good chins and boxing....You can't give one guy the advantage over the other.
The only difference is, BJ is better on the ground, and chooses to finish his fights from there and Gomi is the complete opposite, wanting to finish the fight on the feet.
That personal preference doesn't mean one has the advantage over there other, it just means they tend to go to their stronger suits.
I can see BJ winning over Gomi again but he'd have to fight cautiously. Gomi is much more dangerous standing I wouldn't recommend trading punches with him, even if your BJ.
BJ's boxing is probably the most overrated aspect of any fighter in MMA. Jena Pulver is a prime example. Good boxing, but isn't exactly the best for MMA.

Gomi is one of the best boxers in MMA now. His punching power is also disproportionately strong, his chin is also exceptional. His weaknesses are definitely on the ground. Exiting fighter though.
Gomi is still one of the top light weights in the world, he wasnt in shape against diaz, and when aurelio beat him it looked like he was'nt himself, nice to see him looking good again against Ludwig but the real test for him will be the next year, he's fighting in august so lets hope to see him back to his old self with great fights and wins like he produced for so many years

Gomi has heavy hands for a lightweight, and hes my fav lightweight. I agree he shouldn't be ranked #1 though. The really well rounded guys aren't as fun to watch though.

Gomi used to be a very efficient fighter. However, his conditioning isn't exactly "world class"

I use to love this fucking guy, but all his inactivity and his last opponent (low level)kept the fight competitive. now they got him fighting sergei golysomething.. give me a fuckin break. gomi is another fighter who got lost in the shuffle and folded along with pride. this guy was beast, now I feel there are several guys at lw who can beat him. I agreed when he was ranked #1 during the 04-06 era but to still be ranked at #2 is just plain out ridiculous

ANd if you look at gomi's losses most were during new years a hard time for gomi since that was when his father disowned him i think. And diaz was on drugs you dont know how much that put diaz at an advantage. gomi is good give it to him hes earned his titles and fame

Its just my opinnion Ive been a fan of his since 2001 and a fan of mma since royce won ufc 1. so Ive been into the sport for awhile. Penn just doesnt seem like the fighter he once was he seems to be struggleing nowadays. Just my opinion though and being a welterweight he fights guys who have shorter reach then him in the light weight. hes 5'9 most light weights are 5'7 so hes at the advantage and comeing from a heavier weight hell be stronger then most light weights so if you look at it

Sam stout is 5'10 and got his ass kicked up and down by spencer fisher who is only 5'7. And jusr because hes coming from a heavier weight doesnt mean he will be stronger. Its an illusion dumb people get sucked into. Wanderlei silva is a great example walking around at 210 and only cuttin 5lbs for a fight. Same with urijah faber, he also only cuts 5lbs and these fighters kick ass and are alot stronger than most of their victims.Doesnt matter what the average height of a lightweight is

hes always had the advantage in the light weight. Kinda like Tito used to be Im pretty sure some of you know about that how tito watched his weight so he could stay in a lower weight class instead of being in his proper weightclass back then. ex. a heavy weight loses weight to fight in the middle weight. I love penn but comon most light weight fighters try to workup to 155 not down to 155. you try being 155 and fight a guy who usually weigh 170 both being fit and no weight redyctioning.

What are you talking about? Penn and Gomi are the same age. And Penn is a natural 155, when he fights at higher weights he is just fat. Also, Gomi is a bigger fighter than Penn technically. Penn is an inch taller but has a much smaller body frame. Gomi has wider shoulders and is more muscular than BJ

You don't know what you are talking about... in mma and just about every combat sport people cut weight... they don't "work up" to get to a weight. BJ Penn probably weighs just as much as any light weight out there when they aren't fighting his advantage is not in weight, size or strength it is in skill.

I think that if gomi fought Penn now it would be a close fight but gomi would probly win heres why. Back when he lost to penn he was kinda new to MMA and he fought penn on penns grounds. So penn know the rules and only trains on what he is allowed to do gomi went over as a new comer to that company barely knowing the rules and Pride rules and american company rules for mma are so different look how wandalai beat the shit out of jackson in pride but lost to liddell.

Look at what Gomi did to Jens Pulver. That shows how good of a stand up fighter he is. Plus, he has a great takedown defense. Gomi would destroy Penn in my opinion

BJ beat gomi a long time ago, and he hasnt fought any one at his level for a long time. I think if gomi and bj fought again it would be a very close fight. oh and also GSP will probobly beat BJ especially if Bj has to put on fat like he did against Mat Hughes just to move up to weltureweight.

Gomi is one of the most over rated mma fighters. If he fought in the UFC he would lose half his bouts i.e loss to Diaz, Penn. His record is sugar coated with a ton of punching bags. He fights with the japanese promters so he can avoid losses. If he was a top fighter he would demand to fight the best. But he never does. Great fighter but not even a top five light weight..Pound for Pound..give me a break.

The irony is, both Penn and Gomi have good chins and boxing....You can't give one guy the advantage over the other.
The only difference is, BJ is better on the ground, and chooses to finish his fights from there and Gomi is the complete opposite, wanting to finish the fight on the feet.
That personal preference doesn't mean one has the advantage over there other, it just means they tend to go to their stronger suits.

BJ's boxing is probably the most overrated aspect of any fighter in MMA. Jena Pulver is a prime example. Good boxing, but isn't exactly the best for MMA.

Gomi is still one of the top light weights in the world, he wasnt in shape against diaz, and when aurelio beat him it looked like he was'nt himself, nice to see him looking good again against Ludwig but the real test for him will be the next year, he's fighting in august so lets hope to see him back to his old self with great fights and wins like he produced for so many years
