@oldwaysmusic Thank you. :) You know, there's some company out there that makes a pretty inexpensive PVC harp that might tide you over until you can afford a wooden one. Piper Harp and Lee Harps, I think, both make them.
I'm sure I commented once upon a time. Maybe not, but this song always inspires and moves something deep within me. I come back to listen to it frequently. Perhaps I need to learn this song on guitar, thanks to you. :-)
Thankyou for your wonderful music. I have a harp. I want to get back to playing it. I play the organ in my congregation...but I will never ever be able to stop loving the harp. I fell in love with the harp when I was a child. God bless you.
I love Dusty Strings harp!!!!! I am renting a 32 string and I absolutely love the sound. I have a pedal harp at school and that is great for lower notes but the sound on my own is amazing!!!!!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece!!!!!
@drewlink99 Both of my harps are Dusty Strings...I love them both, though my smaller Ravenna 34 has a lot of advantages as far as portability and choices for being able to adjust its height...and the ability to put a pickup in it. Of course, they have a very bright and resonant sound with their nylon strings, which I happen to like, but which some harpists do not like, preferring the mellower, more muted gut-strung harps.
@mysticallauren Because you sharpen and flatten the tones (the same function served by the black keys on the piano) by flipping levers, which is what you see me doing with my left hand before and during the performance. As opposed to using foot pedals to do so as one would one a pedal harp.
@TalieTaschaaa Thanks. :) Yeah, sorry about the microphone..that seems to be a common complaint about the vids. I never thought any of my videos would end up being as frequently viewed as this one, so I never really considered the fact that it would end up being an issue. ... can you also play a proper concert harp ? - usually ladies play them - at the met we've got a lady player - does a concert harp have too many strings for you ? - thanks for not playing " goodbye murshun durkin" ...
@toronstganymede The main difference between concert harps and lever harps is in how chromatics are handled. The lever harp changes the pitch through the use of levers to raise or lower a tone; a concert harp is also known as a pedal harp, and it accomplishes the same -- much more thoroughly -- through using pedals. Thing is, pedals have a theory all their own, so you have to learn specifically to play one. I'd like one and to take lessons some day.

Wow -- I've never seen anyone flip levers during a piece -- always thought of it in terms of setting the key at the outset and playing in just that key -- though I've only seen levered harps used in Celtic folk music. Interesting.
@jamesiegod Apparently a lot of people who play lever harp don't care for flipping levers during a piece...it is an extra step that you have to practice, and it can be difficult and disruptive when first learning how to do it. So many lever harpists play folk music and stay away from classical pieces.
MakerandtheBreaker, have you attempted an interpretation of any Liszt pieces? Like Un Sospiro or Hungarian Rhapsody #2?
Also, how old were you when you first began playing harp? I'm 29 and want to start learning the harp. I've been playing piano, guitar and violin for about 8 years and drums for about 18 years so I have experience with stringed instruments and reading treble & bass clefs.
I was 29 when I started playing the harp. I had taken piano and violin as a child, and had messed with the guitar for about a year before deciding to take the plunge with a lever harp. I messed with it for about a year and a half on my own before I decided I'd better start taking lessons because I was probably botching the technique. I spent the first couple years unlearning a lot of the habits I'd unknowingly picked up on my own.
Simply mind-blowing. If you ever get a friend with a video camera that is capable of handling a higher quality of a recording, I would honestly pay to see it / hear it. It's beautiful. You have a true talent. Thanks for sharing!!!
This may seem like a stupid question, but what were you doing to the strings at the top before you started playing? I've never actually seen a harp in person.
adorei ! sou fã desta música do beethoven,na harpa então nem se fala!eu a toco no teclado com som de harpa !mas vendo você fazer na própria é maravilhoso!parabéns! de onde você é quero adicionar no facebook
I have a question...What are you doing at the beginning of the video when you touch the top part of the strings before you play? Are you adjusting some type of levers or fine tuning? Sorry, I never saw a harp in person before not too sure what that is...Thanks =)
@cnotenesmith The levers raise or lower the pitch of each string, depending on whether they're up or down. At the beginning of the video, I realized I didn't have the harp in the right key and so made some hasty adjustments. ;)
@Vicia2099 No, no one pays to have their harp tuned...they tune it themselves. It's not like tuning a piano....much easier than that. However, it can probably cost that much to have a pedal harp *regulated*...which is a regular kind of maintenance that needs to be done on the pedal and pulley mechanisms at least once every couple years.
@makerandthebreaker Oh! I appreciate so much your answers, I am learning piano and it has been so but so frustrating cause don't know how to read music fluidly. Thanks for the answer. If I could I would had taken the harp from childhood.
I wish I'd taken it from childhood, too. I played piano as a kid and didn't start the harp until I was 29. Reading music well can take some practice...it comes more easily to some people than others, but if you keep at it, you'll get a lot better. It's kind of like learning another language...or at least another code.
@makerandthebreaker The good part of that is, no matter how old one is, can always be a pro!!! Not like a sport player who is treated as disposable after young age.
@Vicia2099 Don't worry about learning to read music fluidly. I've been playing piano for over 40 years and I still have to stare and thing about it before I can play it. I always had the ear though and that's how I learned even though I've won an International Piano certification years ago.
@saundhaus Good!!!! thank you for your advices, I really appreciate them, now I think I should to start...dunno having fun or composing so the frustrating is not for the hast mechanic stream of learning...Thanks!!!
hey im 16 and in high school and want to learn how to play the harp, since we have one in my orchestra class room that no one uses( by the way i play the violin since 3rd grade) but alot of people have been telling me it's going to be too hard and usually learning the harp takes YEARS!! do you think its too late to learn or should i try? since when do you play and onestly do you think i'll make it?
@leylaluki64 Well, really, learning how to play any instrument *well* takes years. I didn't start playing the harp until I was 29. I've been at it for 10 years now. When I made this video, I'd been playing for about seven years or so...but even after playing only a year or so, I could play fairly decently as long as I wasn't up in front of a crowd of people.
@makerandthebreaker So no, I don't think it's ever too late to learn. The fact that you actually know something about music will also put you ahead of the game. Whether you should try depends on how much you really want this. The same with whether you'll make it. If you stick with anything long enough, odds are that you will eventually make it.
@makerandthebreaker I played piano, violin, and guitar at different points in my life, but I didn't stick with them or give them the practice they needed because, while I did enjoy them, they weren't the right instrument for me. It took plunging in with the harp for me to find *my* instrument. Good luck and best wishes. :)
I study the harp. I asked my teacher I would like to learn a Beethoven Moonlight Sonata. He replied that the music would not be possible because my harp has no keys, besides being very difficult. Now, hearing this presentation, I am presented with such beauty. The beauty leads us to our dreams.
@Airam09maria From what I am told, lever harpists tend to shy away from playing classical music on their harps because it's considered "too chromatic" and thus *is* somewhat more difficult to play and harder to arrange. It is just an extra dimension to practice, but you can learn how to do incredibly complex things with the lever harp if you truly have the desire to do so. As complex as this seemed when I first learned it, I've become very accustomed to doing it,. You can, too. :)
@StaringCompetition Thank you! This arrangement is out of Barbara Brundage's Classics by Request Vol. 1 book, though I have made a few minor modifications.
@luc56poe You should be able to...depending on how low the octaves go on the harp, you *may* have to play around with the arrangement a bit with the left hand. But as long as you have sharpening levers on all your strings (instead of, say, just Cs and Fs) you'll be able to play it, one way or another.
@Tilan123 Thank you! Yes, everything about the harp is harder than the piano. I spent a year teaching myself the harp because I figured "I know how to play the piano, so how hard can it be?" Yeah, major tactical error there. I spent the first couple years of taking harp lessons unlearning all the things I'd "taught" myself about the harp. ;) Still, it's probably easier on a pedal harp than a lever harp. Something like 34 lever flips, if I remember correctly.
@makerandthebreaker I am practicing that song in piano, how you shift to b and #? With those clippers in the top frame? Harp seems to be harder than piano, I assume all harp players also know piano a lot.
This was wonderful, I have no idea how to play a harp just love the music it and the player produces. The levers what are they for and what do they do. You have such great talent. Thanks for the post.
@makerandthebreaker That is called leveled unnatural reality receptiveness, I am not a harp master, so I'd say: great, no bad, now, I perceive it was not her best interpretation, so I might say..regular, but not a strife to ears, but acting as a simple human being u could say...nicely played...you impressed me playing music, not try to impress a harp Russian university professor for a casting...once again...a coffee cup, a rainy afternoon and Moonlight Sonata in harp..makes my day...
@Vicia2099 Thanks. :) Honestly, tend to get very self-conscious and a bit nervous when I am recording myself and knowing that whatever mistakes I make are going to be permanently captured. I'm getting better about it, but I definitely play better when the camera is not recording.
@makerandthebreaker A very classy answer by the way to ppilot1986, good to take the high road. and yes one cannot please everyone, really with music its just to please one and yourself, its not to please anyone else.
Bad quality or not. The piece is still beautiful. And you pulled it off wonderfully. I admire an musician who can play such a hard, and more importantly, beautiful instrument.
this looks very challenging for a lever harp, but very nicely played, I can' t imagine timing the lever changes so you don't loose the rhythm. Very well done! I have a small folk harp, a Glen Aulen I am renting, and have been thinking of getting a Prelude too because the Glen Aulen is ideal for folk but I don't like the way classical sounds on it, but the Dusty, it seems very versatile, and while it's kind of pricey, it's cheaper than 2 harps.
shes more than likely been playing for a long time and on top of that im sure she does it she dosent have to move to a different string...she can just change the semitone to match the sound shed get on a different string
just, splendid!

Hello,
I would like to commend you on your playing.
Who is the arranger for this lever harp version?
Your memorization, tone, technique is very good. The grasp of lever change sequence hypnotic to watch. Thank you very much.
StaringCompetition 11 months ago
@StaringCompetition Thank you! This arrangement is out of Barbara Brundage's Classics by Request Vol. 1 book, though I have made a few minor modifications.

It's amazing how you can remember when & which lever should go up or down!!
I planned to buy a 29 string lever harp do you think I can play this composition on it?
luc56poe 1 year ago
@luc56poe You should be able to...depending on how low the octaves go on the harp, you *may* have to play around with the arrangement a bit with the left hand. But as long as you have sharpening levers on all your strings (instead of, say, just Cs and Fs) you'll be able to play it, one way or another.
makerandthebreaker 10 months ago
Wow,this is great! what kind of harp are you playing?

@bingyisfunny Thank you...it's a Dusty Strings 36FHB.

One of my favorite pieces! Great job! Can't have been easy flipping all those levers. :)

Such an incredible addition to music, Half steps in tone with a harp.
I never knew this was possible, I always thought it was a simple string
instriment. This just adds to my amazment with its and the players ability.
The sweet sounds eminating from the harp are poetic and heart-bound.
sad and majestic at the same time. you are a wonderful player and the harp you play I suspect is a part of you like my Chello is a part of me
Wonderful, thanks again

that was awesome !!
i wan't you to know that =)
it's the first time i listen this piece on harp, so i got alucinated.
no matter the little mistakes. it seems really like you love playing it =) very nice

i got a video for this for piano:D is harp much harder? nice video btw:)
Tilan123 1 year ago
@Tilan123 Thank you! Yes, everything about the harp is harder than the piano. I spent a year teaching myself the harp because I figured "I know how to play the piano, so how hard can it be?" Yeah, major tactical error there. I spent the first couple years of taking harp lessons unlearning all the things I'd "taught" myself about the harp. ;) Still, it's probably easier on a pedal harp than a lever harp. Something like 34 lever flips, if I remember correctly.
makerandthebreaker 1 year ago
@makerandthebreaker I am practicing that song in piano, how you shift to b and #? With those clippers in the top frame? Harp seems to be harder than piano, I assume all harp players also know piano a lot.

This was wonderful, I have no idea how to play a harp just love the music it and the player produces. The levers what are they for and what do they do. You have such great talent. Thanks for the post.
tinroofbusted 1 year ago
@tinroofbusted Thank you! The levers raise and lower the strings a half step in tone.

Vicia2099 1 year ago
@Vicia2099 Thanks. :) Honestly, tend to get very self-conscious and a bit nervous when I am recording myself and knowing that whatever mistakes I make are going to be permanently captured. I'm getting better about it, but I definitely play better when the camera is not recording.
makerandthebreaker 1 year ago
@makerandthebreaker A very classy answer by the way to ppilot1986, good to take the high road. and yes one cannot please everyone, really with music its just to please one and yourself, its not to please anyone else.
tinroofbusted 1 year ago
Bad quality or not. The piece is still beautiful. And you pulled it off wonderfully. I admire an musician who can play such a hard, and more importantly, beautiful instrument.
NationalEmergency21 1 year ago
this looks very challenging for a lever harp, but very nicely played, I can' t imagine timing the lever changes so you don't loose the rhythm.
