Actually, this has nothing to do with sound waves. What you are observing are the modes of vibration of the plate (search wikipedia for Mode Shape). As an object vibrates, some areas move more than others. The sand is drawn to the places that aren't moving. There are often multiple frequencies at which the object will resonate. In this case, as the frequency is increased, the mode shape changes.

Still... the video is a very cool demonstration of modal vibrations!

@sahiti321 The Frequency of the tone is changing, not amplitude. When this occurs on a string, "nodes" occur when the frequency is divisible by the original string length. At exactly twice as fast (2:1), you get two "sausages" not one. at 3:2, you get 3 sausages 4:1, 4. Connecting the sausages is one point of the string which does not move, aka a harmonic or partial.

In this video a plate vibrates, so the nodes occur in two dimensions. the rice is jiggled into the areas which do not move.

It's called geometry. Repeat circular objects of various sizes will yield shapes that looks like crop circles.

Travelling through space with sound would be utterly stupid however, because it's not possible to have sound in vacuum and most of space is vacuum. If it worked it would be really slow. Think about lightning, it takes three seconds for one kilometre. That's not very fast in space terms.

2 )This occurs with SOUNDWAVES.

3) SOUNDWAVES cannot travel through space.
