Turkic languages are not like Latin languages. There is nothing quite like it to compare. An Uyghur from the Chinese occupied East Turkistan can communicate a Turk from Turkey. And differences between Uyghur and Anatolyan Turkish probably is the biggest among the major Turkic languages, beause they live at the two ends of the Turkic world. The other major Turkic languages fall somewhere between. I do not think an Italian and Romanian or Spanish speaker can have a conversation.

Russia has a very unusual racial mixture of people. I think only the most skin heads are in St. Petersburg and Moscow area, but when you get inside Russia and go the places not as popular, I bet you meet a lot of unusual people.
