  • i love the bgm in the first minutes

  • The music in this is awesome.

  • "I gotta say, Egon. I'm not impressed."

"Yeah? Well neither was God when he made you."

  • It's really cool that they got away with making this, there's no way that most networks would have the guts to do it live action style.

  • 3:50 that's not a shoggoth, it's a star vampire.

  • Kind of funny that the character who voiced Bill Murray's character in this cartoon also voiced the original Garfield cartoon, and then Bill Murray ended up being the voice for the Garfield Movies.

  • Both Wagner's Occult Shop in this episode and Ray's Occult Shop in Ghostbusters 2 were based on the old Magickal Childe shop in NYC.

  • Strange how similar this chapter is to that part in the first Hellboy movie where Hellboy is chasing a similar Lovecraftian entity in a museum. Even stranger is the fact that Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is both a huge H.P Lovecraft fan and this series. And even more strange is the fact Guillermo Del Toro -who is a gargantuan Lovecraft fan- directed Hellboy.

    Coincidence? I don't think so!

  • I'm guessing they spelled the name "Cathulhu" because the Arkham House publishing company is the copyright holder of the "Cthulhu Mythos" proper, and this is a parody, albeit a well done and well-researched parody. I'm guessing they had to ask permission to make this, though, because they use Arkham and the Necronomicon.

  • @Sh4d0wKat

Still, Lovecraft basically said that his stories were fair game for anyone to expand on. We wouldn't have the Mythos the way it is now without other writers' influence. I'm sure they could have used the original spelling if they wanted.

  • @GatekeeperAidan I dunno... What Lovecraft himself wanted isn't necessarily what August Derleth, one of Lovecraft's friends who expanded the Cthulhu Mythos and the one who founded Arkham House, wanted: Tactical Studies Rules Inc. tried to incorporate the Cthulhu Mythos into Dungeons & Dragons and was almost sued because Arkham House had sold the rights to another company.

  • think one of the reasons this cartoon was written so well is because(not sure if this is right or not...) that J. micheal strazisncki(babylon 5's creator) wrote a lot of this stuff.

  • was this animated in japan? certainly looks like it from the way it is drawn, while it doesnt have the weirdo anime hair, it has the fluidity of 1980s and 1990s anime, I could be wrong,

  • I think this is ironic. The guy who voiced garfield in the animated series is replacing bill murray from the live action movie, then some 20 years later bill murray plays garfield in a live action movie...oooh spooky!

  • Anyone else thinks Mr Howard looks like a Garden Nome...

  • This old episode can be used to teach children and adults about C'thulu. Very well done. I didnt see this episode before. But its fun. I like cartoon,, Lovecraft and Crowley. So, that fits my mood today.

  • Unlike other people attempts of a Lovecraftian film, this cartoon does justice to the Mythos and Lovecrafts works ^_^

  • i've seen enough hentai to know where this is going

  • Lol at :50 "That's bad."

  • Man, this is amazing. I need to rewatch all of these episodes. They had some talented writers.

  • Has anyone considered that the misspelling of Cthulhu may simply be due to the fact that this is a kids show and Cathulhu may be easier for kids to read? I disagree with the person who said it may be due to Lovecraft's work not being public domain when this was aired for the obvious reason that there are quotions from Lovecraft in this episode.

    Kick ass episode.

  • @TheGISAMURAI That's the same deal for Beetlejuice. In the movie, his name is clearly spelled Betelgeuse. Alec Baldwin even pronounces it incorrectly, how would the audience know it sounds like "beetle juice"? Why, make the title outright say "Bettlejuice" of course!

So yeah, I agree with ya man. Kids wouldn't understand the who lack of vowels and everything. So, just make it easier for them and put an "a" in it.

  • Mr Howard?? ZOMG Robert E!!!

  • wow, u sure dont look smart lol

why dont they make cartoons like this anymore?

  • this is what ghostbusters 3 should be about

  • @onijimbo i think gb3 should be boogieman/sam hain!! That would be a sick movie!!

  • @onijimbo Hell yes! :D

  • @onijimbo Yeah!

  • So, did anyone see Alice Derleth's jewelry and think of the jewelry from the Shadow over Innsmouth?

  • This is one of the best episodes!!

  • 3:31What did she called it?

  • @siralucard19 A Shoggoth, a monster made by the enemies of the Chtulhu... ironic

  • @ELGENERALPETERSON thank you

  • How did this guy succeed in spelling c'thulhu wrong!?

  • @Horrorlord1 Who? The guy posting the vid spelt it exactly as in the title of the episode.

And that isn't "wrong" anyway, there are many different ways to spell or pronounce it, Lovecraft himself said so, since the name is supposed to be unpronouncable by humans anyway.

  • @Prophaniti666 The way to write it is C'thulhu. But you can say it in many different ways... In lovecrafts most stories and the first one mentioning C'thulhu, its "c'thulhu"

  • @Horrorlord1 To my knowledge the first way it was written was "Cthulhu" (from the story "The Call of Cthulhu"), but there is still no one set way to spell or pronounce it since it's an inherently alien word. Plus as I also said, the series isn't trying to simply portray Lovecraft's story, it's doing it's own take.

Point being this "guy" you're talking about (I still don't know who that is) didn't make some big mistake in spelling.

  • 4:11 for Peter copping a feel

  • Jalbarthat Ug'Nufaugga Jalth-Ralth Akbar Zel'Njael!!!

  • According to this show, Cthulhu is TINY. :L

  • Can't those guys just call Delta Green?

  • Dereleth, Clark Ashton, Howard, Lovecraft, all named in the show. Awesome!

  • whos oshaga (i think thats the spelling)

  • the klan?

  • is anyone a bit confused about the ghostbusters movie storyline????? i am i fing it hard to understand what gozer is and stuff like that

  • I bet those tentacles where a bitch to animate.

  • lol.. i remember watching this when i was a kid.. this very episode.. holy sh*t! i was like 3 years old at the time

  • "The Whore From the depths" Paris Hilton can beat Cthulhu!

  • Seriously, cartoon Egon had the weirdest hair ever.

  • the serie's monsters were unbelievably scary for a kid....

  • So they just left the cuthulu spawn in the sewer and never dealt with them?

  • @xIegionx Do you want to deal with them? :) It seemed like they couldn't be stopped, that they had to get to the main bad guy to stop them all.

  • @newguy33X I doubt it stopped the cthulu spawns, and they probably could've. In the meantime anyone working int he sewers or near a drain ditch will definitely die cause nothing was done about them

  • Educational and fun!

  • this is so god damn awesome it's making my balls hurt

    god damn

  • what better way to show off a beautiful woman, from the hips up ;D

  • Am I mistaken, or is Venkman's voice actor the same as for Tummi from Disney's Gummi Bears?!?

  • @Daniel4646 it is

  • @Daniel4646 it is, garfield too

  • @Daniel4646 Lorenzo Music was actually fired from The Real Ghostbusters for sounding too much like Garfield.

  • @gaelicviking

Next thing I'd know, they considered bringing in the voice actor for Odie as a replacement.

    XD

  • Man, they did some serious research for this one.

  • I LOVE these old cartoons, it's fresh now as it was 20 yrs ago, FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR more BETTER than the shit now .

  • Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn. You cannot defeat him >:)

  • Wow, I expected this episode to just be a few subtle references to H.P. Lovecraft's work, but they really dived right into the whole mythos with it!

  • man, the soundtrack (not the opening song though) for this show really reminds me of turtles

  • "I thought you were supposed to rotate the tires!"

"Why bother? They rotate enough when the car's moving!"

That joke never gets old. :)

  • guns can't stop them, proton packs can't stop them, nor can hundreds of gallons of boiling water- but- MANHOLE COVER!

    *congratulatory pats all around*

    Problem solved....

I used to watch this show faithfully as a kid- usually even the reruns- I never got tired of it when it was on the air- thanks for posting!!!! I can't tell you how delighted I am at the memories this brings back!

  • i watched the cathulhu fan moive a week or two ago and this is just like that with out the flash backs and adds the ghostbusters in i love it!

  • I love the old BGMs from this show. Almost videogame-esque.

  • Everyone knows the best way to defeat Cthulhu is to run over him with your tramp steamer.

  • Bruce Campbell cameo, PLEASE! xD

  • DIC, quality American animation unpolished while sustaining it's charachter and definition, nice to see that everyone in a cartoon does not have to have BIG eyes with round faces, while flying, squeeking and screaming and where the only difference in each ones appearance is their hair color, could that be anime i speak of? Actually, some must be insane to think that there was something wrong with Egon's haircut.

  • Jesus, they quote 'em right from the friggin' text! I love it! Seriously, they pay tribute and beat the ever loving snot outta the Cthulhu texts! Go Ghostbusters!!!

  • Peter grope on 4:10 xDD

  • 6:03-6:07 it looks as though they've gone to warp; no wonder the tire blew...

  • Mr. Howard looks like Chuck Mangione without shins

  • Comment removed

  • Hehehe, Interesting how in this show H.P. Lovecraft and the Necronomicon both exist.

  • Comment removed

  • Theyre doing a spotless job on the Lovecraft. There are some movie directors who should have called the writers of this episode. I always loved this cartoon.

  • @TheCaptainLulz You're tellin' me! The Book of Dzyan, the Pnakotic manuscripts, a Shoggoth, and even a quote from Abdul Alhazred. All they need now is an appearance by Yog Sothoth and the Elder Gods.

  • @Calriec IA! IA! Phun'glui Mgwl'Nafh Cthulhu Rl'yeh Wagh'nagl F'thagn!

  • How come Ray sounds like Fred from scooby doo?

  • @clntravis becaus it IS Fred from Scooby-Doo.

  • @doktorkloride Frank Welker, considered the greatest voice actor of all. He also voiced Megatron, and Grimace in the old McDonals commercials.

  • @clntravis and the voice of peter venkman, also the voice of garfield

  • "wow you sure dont look smart" ?! how did that make it on television lol

  • does Peter cop a feel at 4:11?

    lol

  • ia! ia! cthulhu fhtagn!

  • Peter - "Wow! You sure don't look smart"

    AWESOME SHOW, I MISS IT.

  • hmm, there was an episode of g.i. joe where lady jay was going to be sacrificed to such a monster after finding out she was a relative of destro(yeah, destro, wtf).

  • That one guy sounds like garfield

  • did anyone else notice rays super human strength when he picked up the man hole cover like it was made out of aluminum?

  • relese the kraken lol

  • That's a rather tame looking Shoggoth. She sure is lucky she knew a banishing spell...

  • Cthulhu Ftagan!

  • "Wow, you sure don't look smart."

    LOL =D

  • They should make a double episode about this monster.

  • @metal87power No they shouldn't. I think, Chtulhu is not funny enough for the ghostbusters. A great horror-figure like Chtulhu is not adequate to be in a serial like that. But that's just my oppinion.

  • @ArthurShawcross I never cared much about comedy in Ghostbusters. I cared a lot more about cool action sequences and special effects.

  • Is it just me, or did the writers leave out some detective work that would be crucial to the story? Nobody had even established that there WAS a cult, and then BAM! They're in the lair? I mean, I know it's a children's cartoon, but that's no excuse for laziness.

  • @Rhademanthus The Ghostbusters are experts on the paranormal, and the attack by the green spawn established there was a cult. Ray himself said that they're part of a cult. Since the creatures appeared, there's a cult.

  • @Rhademanthus I think they left it yout because otherwise the episode wouldn't fit in the time table.

  • How the hell do they have a copy of the Pnakotic manuscripts, to say nothing of being able to read it? Surely an alien artifact is rarer and more sanity-blasting than the man-made Necronomicon?

  • 3:30-3:34

A "shuggoth" is another demi-godlike creature from Lovecraft's Chthulu mythos.

They're pretty powerful, but not as powerful as Chthulu himself.

I don't think that he wrote them as looking like that, though.

  • Ram him with a boat?

  • No Jamanprince, they don't kill Cathulhu

  • thats not a shogoth

a shogoth is like goop and acid with eyeballs and teeth

  • The series wasn't trying to portray things precisely as they are in one particular mythos. It took mythological/supernatural things and gave them their own spin.

I'm sure the words recited in the spell aren't 'accurate' either, but who cares?

  • @1a5c u just described my grandmother

  • @1a5c yeah, that's the RPG description. I'm not even sure lovecraft ever gave a good description of one. So stop being obnoxious.

  • @Docrate1 #mountainsofmadness

  • What? They killed Cthulhu?

  • grope at 4:10

  • did you just see the joker

  • Peter is Garfield love it

  • Damn Ray is strong...lifting that manhole cover over his head.

  • @Rivan13 God bless adrenaline.

  • Wasn't there another cthulhu episode where there's a hoard of water demons and Ray goes into the sewers by himself and almost gets killed? I remember he sends Slimer out to get the guys. Slimer regurgitated the Ecto 1's license plate on Jenine's desk to get the point across that Ray was in trouble. What was that epi? Was always one of my faves including this one.

  • @Skymouth= The episode is Beneath These Streets. And no, theyare not Cathulhu servants. They are regular ghosts trying to destroy a pillar that is holding up the Island of Manhattan. I'll let you know if it shows up here. I have it on dvd, though, I'm having problems with my computer, and I can't download it.

  • i always thought it was prounced kah-thu-lu

  • Daughter of August Derleth perhaps?

  • Always a hot chick for peter, never can he be right. I think theres a point to that though.

  • "I'll go with you back to New York"

    --

Even for the 80s, they sure do get plane tickets fast!

  • So awesome.

  • an egor!

  • hahaha peter lol 1:56

  • Godzilla wearing a squid on his head

That's exactly how I think of him.

  • So, am I the only person who thought the shoggoth was not nearly amorphous enough?

Also, people need to learn to say Cthuhlu right. It is a two syllable word, or at least as close as you can get it to be, sort of like saying the words "Tooloo" and "Clooloo" at the same time.

  • This is no correct way to say cthulhu; its just the closest approximation to its real name. Lovecraft originally pronounced it "Kloo-Lhoo", but went on to pronounce it several different ways, including Too-Loo and Kar-Thoo-Loo. Most writers in the mythos, including Lovecraft, consider the name to be malleable and it has been spelt in several different ways.

The most common pronunciation is Ka-Too-Loo, which is the most appropriate way to pronounce a word that is spelt cthulhu.

  • 5:14- yeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss????

  • Yes its true there are hot ladies in massachusets! lol im not a lesbo!!!!!!!!

  • 3:42 - oh crap

  • "This joint would scare Stephen King." it's been a long time since I've seen these episodes brings back grand memories.

  • "I bet she looks like a tank and has a personality to match..." lol!

  • I really dont think lovecraft-themes and the Cthulhu mythos is something to put in a children's television programme. Still pretty cool though!

  • the cthulu mythos and the other types of story plots from this cartoon what were seperated this show from the rest, it made it actually spooky and really worth watching. it was really fun to watch, that's for sure! but i get where you are coming from. hehe

  • the language construction for the spellcasting is actually pretty close to Summerian (single short syllables) the Cthulu mythos is pretty close as well

  • The Red thing is supposed to be a Shoggoth. But it looks nothing like a shoggoth!

  • It's a Shoggoth in THIS particular fictional universe. It could stand to reason that the way Cthulu stuff works in the RGB universe work differently from the way Lovecraft originally wrote it.

    .

  • When he shows up, let's just blast him!

    Winston ftw.

  • Why does Peter Venkman remind me of Garfield?

  • same voice actor

  • The voice actor died, though. Since Bill Murray played Peter Vekman in the Ghostbusters movie, he decided to play the voice of Garfield in the live action movie as a way of paying his respects to the guy who voiced the character he played in Ghostbusters.

  • the first voice actor of peter died then. after season 3 i think they got the actor who did uncle joey from full house to voice venkman. heres a funny tiddbit, murray complained the first voice actor sounded nothing like him, and in the episode Take Two, when watchin the film at the end venkman complained murray looked nothing like peter

  • @WrathOfTheGate87

And what about the fact that the first guy who played Peter Venkman on the cartoon was also the voice of Garfield (that's why Bill Murray complained), and Bill Murray who was a live action Peter Venkman did the voice of Garfield in the movie... And Murray regrets that on Zombieland

  • @pytko3 Actually, he recently stated in an interview that he did the Garfield movie, because he wanted to work with the director who was doing it... who ended up NOT being the director he thought it was. He wouldn't have done the movie if he had known.

  • @pytko3 also murray felt bad because he got him fired after ghostbuster two came out its true

  • At 1:25, it looks like Jessie Bannon from Jonny Quest. Looks like or just happens to be in the same plane :)

  • Ok I have seen ALOT of cartoons and does anyone else agree thats this cartoon changes the music the most of all cartoons lol

    plz reply

  • The Real Ghostbusters cartoon could be said to possibly be one of the greatest tv cartoon shows ever made. It's not just the animation but the story telling...the writing that is fantastic too. The show appeals to everyone young. You don't hear silly kid comments or see mature themes it's just a well rounded program.

  • @Luminous72

Yeah I'm amazed at the level of vocabulary in this show. I'm glad I was old enough to have this as my favorite cartoon as a kid.

I also love the music-the theme music, the ambient music, the motifs, etc...

I used to get up so early on Saturday mornings to watch this

  • Necronomicon? KLATU! BARADA! NIKT....Nikto?...Necktie...definately an N word!

    KLATU! BARADA! NRRRFLGGMMFFFF!!

  • IT'S CTHULHU!!! CTHULHU!! NOT CATHULHU! I understand that it has many diffrent ways of being pronounced, but if ur gonna do an episode about it, then do it right xP

  • For some reason I thought Egon was the leader, not Peter.

  • i think they switched ray and peter's looks.... ray had black hair, peter had orange, not the other way around.

  • Nah I remember Peter having black hair, well brown hair, back when I was young. I used to have pretty much all the toys too lol.

  • MarvelHero402 - Yeah, the whole 2012 hookup being from Mayan text concerning the end of the world (December 12th 2012, aka 12/12/12)... I think the Harry Potter movies will be done by then so at least 20% of the planet will have no regrets when 12/12/12 comes and the world ends.

  • BTW, I STILL think it's wierd that the "voice" of Garfield voiced Bill Murray's character, and nearly 20 years later, Bill Murray turned the tables!!!!!! :P

  • WHOA... This episode is really creepy.....! And I'm an adult! Fan of Jason, Michael, and everything!!!!!!!

  • Read Lovecraft's work, the Cthulhu mythos is quite in depth.

  • I think thats the first time I've heard the "Cthulhu Fhtagn" quote spoken in a way that made it seem lame. She says it like she read it on the back of her shampoo bottle....

  • Hey, Anime fans she looks like the hot chick from Crying freeman series!!!Really sof anime ponr I wish they ha dturned into a movie a real life action movie!!!hehehhehehe

  • I think they did.

  • one of the best episodes evr...

(this, and the christmas carol one... and those where they have to go inside the containig machine)

  • He totally cops a feel at 4:10.

  • lol sure did

  • its scary to think that this story of the 12 old ones is a real ive seen it mentioned in so many cultures around the world and they all aggre on the number 12 the number bringing death as in the year 2012. i myself am skepitcal about these issues but its kinda hard to deny when the facts when they are coming at you from a freakin saturday mornig cartoon. but bare in mind this show had great writers so i know they did there research.

  • True, truebeliever just like evry cartoon in the 80's had great writer such as Buzz dixon famous dc writer in sci-fi !!

  • I wonder how many sanity points the gang had left after this episode...

  • The inability of most of the team to correlate their peril lends the sanity defense. In other words, the power of their ridiculousness prevents their SAN from dropping. Egon's SAN hit 0 long ago. I mean, just look at him. Would any sane man have that haircut?
