I think Ritchie tries playing this lick as straight E pentatonic with sextuplets increasing by one scale degree each time which turns out being much harder than the way Paul plays it (in terms of keeping the feel and the original use of dynamics). Both are impossible to play but Paul's is definitely a much easier way to pull off this lick at speed. Let's not forget that Ritchie is out of his zone playing songs that one person wrote with his own style in mind. However, they are both untouchable.

@espibanez1 Haha, yeah. I forgot to add that Ritchie plays it entirely in the 12th position... making it a lot harder than Paul's 3NPS ascending sextuplet method. Ritchie plays all the same notes but he does 2NPS across 3 strings or the 6 notes across 4 strings (1, 2, 2, 1).

I read somewhere that Kotzen stated that this was the hardest song he ever had to learn. I am a huge kotzen fan and a gilbert fan as well. Both are great. Kotzen does a wonderful job as a Mr big guitarist. For one I like hearing solo's and licks that are not in the original recording. That's whats soo cool about live performances.

yea stupid he tried to copy gilbert. He is light years away from gilbert as a musician and a guitarist. Still Mr Big would be better with gilbert but kotzen is an amazingly complete musician. Vocally they sound -awesome-, Kotzen sings WAY better than Paul. I think the biggest fault here is that Richie tries to follow Paul's licks instead of doing his own. He even tries to play it off with ye olde guitar behind the back trick only to flip it over and FALL FLAT ON HIS FACE performance wise. SLOPPY SLOPPY SLOPPY. Kotzen FAILS here on the guitar IMHO.

the thing is, this song proves exactly that Paul Gilbert has the same dimensions as Kotzen, or even more, and way better technique (don't get me wrong, you have to be Paul Gilbert or Yngwie to have better technique than Kotzen). PG does this lick alternating between alternate picking and legato. 3 notes legato, 3 notes picked. and does really wide stretches. The intro is beyond sick. But Kotzen did well to not try to play PG's lick, and do his own. He is a sick player too, and an awesome singer

I think Richie is doing a great job. I am a huge PG fan nad will admit that I lost interest in Mr Big when Paul left but yeah Richie is doing a great job and to be honest what PG has over Kotzen in technique, Richie makes up for in guitar tone. He's got a much fatter richer sound than Paul who sometimes has a bit too much presence on his sound for some applications. Not to mention Richie is a better backup singer than Paul
