@MrAvatar75 In Spain they don't have basses? O.o only Sopranos, Altos, and Tenors? That's strange... And I have to disagree with you on the difficulty level of this song. You may call this "difficult", but I have to say that "Twa Tanbou" and "Koudjay" by Sydney Guillaume are both VERY rhythmically hard songs (They are AMAZING! You should check them out!).
Their vowels are really spread. That is something that needs to be worked on. You, as the director, should tell them to focus on a more European sound.
@tenoroctaves I'm actually very fond with spirituals. My high school choir has sung Elijah Rock and The Battle of Jericho by Moses Hogan. Despite the fact, that it's a spiritual shouldn't change the fact that basic choral techniques shouldn't be thrown out of the window. Barbara Hendricks, Jessye Norman, etc. sing spirituals all the time and they sound nothing like these kids.
well, I am proud of the job you did with your students, and I hope that you are still teaching. wow! You have me smiling wide and crying at the same time. Praise God!

I would just like to say how proud I am to finally come across black people singing spirituals. Although I'm very proud to see non African American people sing the spirituals and embrace our culture, I see less of us embracing the history that made us so strong. Kudos to you for keeping our history alive!!
I'm with you on the mic thing but they still have more of that oomf that is required to do Moses Hogan arrangements. How many basses were singing? I know that a lot of Bass II's don't really exist in high school age. When I had did this in HS, it was me and one other guy that could sing those low notes that Moses would put in his arrangements.
I like their sound Keep up the good work with them. :D
@LizImaryIo Geez. What's in the water? LOL That's a lot of bass. Love it! I've always found that there are a lot of Tenor II's and Baritones for high school age kids. Voices are still changing.
@Geronimo1913 oh you know the usual :) blame it on global warming but out of the 20 in our class we have 4 tenors, 4 altos, 4sopranos,and eight basses, hehe must be a CA thing..
I love the enthusiasim in this piece! This gave me chills. We're singing this in the chorus at my school, and it isn't anywhere near this powerful. A wonderful job!
well for one...at the time i was student teaching and only had them for a semester. two...you have to consider SEVERAL factors before you go judging.....that may be true but you have to consider the background of the students
@tenoroctaves haha <3 i LOVED it, my All-County Choir did this song and it was no better. im tired of going through people comments saying mean things about this piece, i love it, and they dont know anything about music <3 :) keep up the great work.!
I love this song like all the other Moses Hogan arrangements but I can't seem to understand why the two boys are loud i dont think they should have had a mic bc it took away from the choir bc you could hardly hear them but overall a good performance. I cant wait till i become a choral director..
Not bad at all! Tenors seem to overpower a little TOO much though. I know they have the melody, but they seem to drown out the rest of the choir too much. Maybe it was a microphone thing, I dunno... But this was an excellent rendition nonetheless! 5/5
I love dis song and it was so tight. You really did a good directing Mr.Pierce and im so glad dat Ms.Nunn choose u to be our chrous teacher u and her has really taught me alot and thanks again.
Your choir is really good! I here rushing but it was still really good. When I was in high schoo and when we would sing this we had rushing problems as well. But I really enjoyed that, now I miss high school choir so much. LOL
