can you get there by train/trolley/bus from downtown?

I am planning to go to San Diego but I will not have car which make me wonder how to get to attractions like Zoo, Safari, Legoland?

any recommendations on location for hotel, I would be grateful. thank you.

I saw the polar bears. I went to zoo, animal park, Balboa park, took a boat trip around harbor. I live a little far from everything so bus was the best to move around but I figured it out. I enjoyed my in San Diego, there were other places I didn't get to go to because of time. Thanks again.
