i remember me and a friend were listening to this album back then on 1992 chugging up some brews, while this chicks wanted to hang with us ..all of a sudden one of them said oh metallica sounds great what album is it? we looked at each other .we go did you know this is sepultura? after they left ,i gave my drink a little sip ,then i couldnt contain myself from laughing again.thing is never argue with a lady about good music , the only time they should open their mouth is to suck cock
@bengativo6 that reminds me of a time when i was just getting into heavy music and of course master of puppets was my gateway. i was only 12 or 13 and my older cousin was playing slayer and I asked him if it was the new metallica. I was young and still ignorant but from that day forward i never slipped up again. I was hooked on heavy music.
@falsehope444444 If you're referring to Derrick Green, I wouldn't say he ruined the band. They'd already started going downhill with that piece of crap Roots while Max was still in the band.
Back when I was a teenager, I would often go to my room, turn off the lights and listen to this album. It truly felt like the devil himself was in my room. I also did that with Slayer, Deicide and Death's early stuff.
@fetonos A band can only be overrated if more people "like" a band than they deserve. Since only a very small percentage of people have even heard of the band, that is hardly even possible. Death deserves respect because of the influence they had on so many other bands
@wolf4241991 I agree. There were bands out there playing full blooded death metal, that pre-dated the band death. And olny a full would call bloody vengence thrash lol.
Morbid Visions and Bloody Vengence= first true death metal albums. Death did not invent the genre, It was the Brazilian scene. Posessed was Death/Thrash, not full death.
I think the same can be said for Sepultura though. It's ambiguous and meaningless to attempt to pinpoint who was the first 'death metal' band, certainly. The inherent arbitrariness is hard to avoid.
@wolf4241991 yeah but theres a problem with your theory: neither of those are pure death metal either. in fact, there was no "pure death metal" until the 1990's. everything before that still had a huge thrash influence because the genre was still taking form. sepultura is thrash. scream bloody gore was dominately death metal, even if it did have some thrash left in it. death created the death metal sound. bands like sepultura and possessed were just large influences on death metal.
@thychaos Im sorry, But i have a hard time calling releases like Bloody Vengence, Misanthropy, Athropapagy, and numerous others to be semi-death. Death metal was in fact around in the late 80s. However, I see the point you are making saying that early death metal was influenced by thrash, because it was, but just because a genre was influence by another, that doesnt make it partailly that genre. For instance, Thrash metal Was influenced by Hardcore, but is Thrash hardcore? No.
@thychaos Regardless, I do respect your oppinion, My point was, I just dont believe that death was the very first death metal band, and other bands were playing the style before them.
But the difference is bands like this, Possessed, ect, had too much of a thrash metal vibe/sound to be considered truly death metal. Death had thrash influence, but not the sound. They were straight death metal.
@Likeyoucare No, I tend to dissgree. Contrary to what most think, I say Sepultura from '85-'86 was in fact more deathly than death/mantas. Vulcano as well. From the vocals to the riffs, there is a much more deathly feel. The thrash metal influences are much more obvious on SBG than BV or MV in my oppinion.
If you listen to the music you can hear it, it's way more thrash-y than Death. Really, no songs on the album drop tempo, the songs have the fast tempos of thrash, and that thrash feel. "Scream Bloody Gore" is the opposite, relying more on riffs that feel evil, not nearly as fast, and it doesn't feel like thrash. One can definitely tell it's death metal.
@Likeyoucare Look I guess when it all vome down to it, it all just a matter of oppinion. There are some who would agree with me, just as there are some eho would say exactly what you do. I respect you oppinion, but i still dissagree. And there is NO WAY anybody can tell me Bloody Vengence sounds like merely thrash. But at least we both can agree that these bands all had a role in creating the death metal genre, and while death is a great band( i especailly love leprosy) they didnt create dm imho
That is true, and really you can't change people's opinions. It's not, there are death elements, much like this, "Seven Churches", "Seasons of the Dead" etc, but those aren't straight death metal. Yes, a lot of the Brazilian thrash bands and German thrash bands played a key role in developing the sound. And I disagree, they created death metal, pure death metal without any thrash sound in it.
If anyone has ever understood the singing of any death metal vocalist, I have yet to meet that person. Fortunately for you, the uploader has posted the lyrics in the info tab, just click on "more info" and you'll see it. Your English writing seems pretty decent (better than some who have it as a first language), so I'm assuming you'll be able to read the lyrics no problem.
i've understood a lot of them. mostly, i can't hear the lyrics in general, but there some songs i can, like six feet under. death metal vocalists can be apreciated with lyrics on a paper, and next time you heard the same song live in a show, you understand the lyrics. anyways, this is not death metal
i know im probaly gonna get 100 minuses but i do believe that this Black metal(and no nott because of lyrics he could of sing about green elephants i would still say it)
Not in this case, this is where black metal emerges, clearly not pure black metal like mayhem but close. Bands like sacofago, sepultura, and bathory are an example.
a band is not black metal just because is antichristian or satanic.... sepultura is definitely not black metal. . . they were born to do thrash metal then people said that their sound is so hard and extreme that they seams like primal death metal... but, really, black metal is totally another thing... bathory is primal black metal and mayhem is defenetely black
Venom yes (lyrics), add some trash metal bands, also mercyful fate(mainly the corpse paint) and also bathory sounds way different before under the sing of the black mark.
I remember getting a tape from my cousin in the very early 90s.
It had artists like Wasp, Metallica and Anthrax and I think either Morbid Vision or SCHIZOPHRENIA from Sepultura.
I was probably six or seven years old at the time, Sepultura came as shock for me
it was the most evil sounding band I had heard at that point.
Its so fun to hear the tunes again.
Thank God for Youtube! :-)
