Well, I don't know if I have ever heard this or not. I notice that about 2:10 it says "Title Song Sung By Nancy Sinatra." I have probably listened to the Nancy version at least 20 or 30 thousand times since I first bought my 45 rpm copy of it back in about 1967. I only saw the movie once - it just didn't impress me like the earlier James Bond movies.
Forgive me, but this is Awful! Why is She "Yawning" notes? It's Technique over Substance, like Whitney houston, & ALL the Singers now that JUST sing to impress, & Never to yield a Deeper Feeling. And in Nancy's Case, it was her Vunerability that gave YOLT that celestial/angelic sound. But Trust me, there's no shame in being beaten by Nancy Sinatra let me tell you!
And it wasn't just the Vocals.. those Opening Strings were something else! Nancy has an Original Voice tho. Julie? Whitney Houston!
Couldn't disagree more!, Sorry. The Nancy Sinata version is haunting, unique and totally unforgettable....could you honestly say that about Julie Rogers' version??? Definitely not. She sounds like a Shirley Bassey 'wannabe', and does not have a unique voice, albeit, limited of Sinatra. Secondly, the score doesn't hold a candle to the final version, and thirdly, the lyrics simply dont compare. Thanks for posting, but it just emphasizes exactly WHY the art director passed it over..thank goodness
Not having lived through the 60s can anybody out there please tell me the story behind these theme song versions of YOLT(Julie Rogers, Lorraine Chambers)? Were they really considered for the film but changed at the last minute?
According to wiki, this demo was recorded for the movie but NS was chosen instead. This was released on a 1992 album 'The Best of Bond . . .James Bond.' I've added this to my 1967 music playlist.

@intrepidlikes You've got me there . . . . I've learned a little about a lot of music history recently, but I don't know anything about the collaboration you mention. Music is a serendipitous business - as much about being in the right place, right time, as having the talent.
I think this song (it's quite different to the song Nancy Sinatra sang for the film) is a bit of an Asian cliché. Interesting to hear it though, never knew it existed, and thanks for posting.
This was John Barry and Don Black's first stab at a title song for You Only Live Twice.Rogers has better voice than Sinatra and I really like the song.
Julie can feel a hard done by that she didn't get the gig.
The songs matched surprisingly well with the images. I do like this song, but the original has a bit more zip to it. Julie's is more in the Shirley Bassey vein
Rogers is a better singer, but the Sinatra version is the better song. The lyrics in the Rogers version are *terrible*.

Nancy Sinatra's version is better...
spainbogi 1 year ago
This is far superior!
Much more serious and Bond-ish, invokes a feeling of dark Depth and deception
berettadreams 2 years ago
It sure grows on you. I like it now... a good alternate. Still love Nancy though. Julie had a hit, in 1966, with "The Wedding Song (Ava Maria)".

her bugle-esque voice evokes laughter.

this is a neat song, but sorry, the sweeping strings, sweet melody and grandiosity of the Nancy Sinatra version towers over this in all aspects.

@chkjns Thanks. So I take it Julie Rogers' was also with John Barry and Don Black's collaboration?

This is way better than the Sinatra version, Barry is at his best in this song.

the Nancy Sinatra version is way better

try it with a die another day theme maybe.
TheDrYes 2 years ago
its pretty good cause its got more asian tune and more vocal time.

i like the beat and all, but the original is far more '007-ish' and has more flair to it, in my opinion

nancy sinatra's is better. The best of this film was their scapes (paisajes) and the beautifull leitmotiv from the main theme.
Thanks for the video!

i agree. nancy;s version is better!

This is okay. I love that nancy's version mixes sounds of both east an west. this is strictly oriental.

WELL the song is not that bad but i don't think should sing it - she does not have the right voice for it

this was excellent. wouldnt have minded if this was the official chosen one. of course sinatra's version was just a tad bit better.

I like it but I think she was trying too hard to sound like Shirley Bassey when she did her big hit Goldfinger

Nancy Sinatra was the right choice for this song. Julie Rogers is good, but I don't like how she sung the song. Just my opinion though.

I've liked Julie Rogers since "The Wedding". This was new to me - thanks for posting...
jonij120 3 years ago
It was tossed around as a demo, but Rogers maintains that she was told that this was meant to be the real title song.
Anyway they went with Sinatra and had one of the best Bond songs ever

Pardon my ignorance, but is the music scored by John Barry? Never heard this one before but it sounds great.

Very nice, but I'm glad they went with Nancy.
