  • who's on kit, anyone know?

  • It's good that so many of you like it I mean we all share the same planet personaly I wish he and his cronies would go away and the likes of the jazz warriors come back

  • great! heard him quote "bewitched" in a solo last night too ;)

  • grande

  • Cliches zzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Hot Damn!

  • ALL WITH HIS THUMB!?!? I quit

  • Incredible, last time I saw him he was playing alongside Frank Wess,at the Nairn Jazz Festival, blew everyone away and then his amp/speaker went off,and on,and off.Jim then kicked it every twelve bars and brought the house down.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • I saw jim play last night... After playing billy strayhorn's lush life, he said 'man , it took me 20 years to learn to play that song properly'......so 10 years is nothin!

  • I've been playing guitar for over 10 years. And after seeing this video. I quit. hah.

  • what a man!

  • He's one of my favourite jazz guitarists.

  • I really like everything on his playing but he lacks in thumb speed. Just kidding of course... He's great!

  • Love that he's playing a $600 Korean made, guitar, and killing making it sing!

Goes to show, it's not the tools...

  • @melrhyne Yeah Ill go with you on that!! shows up all these guys with £2000 surhs!!!

  • On Fire!!!.....magic

  • no kidding. great tone and very melodic.

  • This guy's tearin' it up! With his thumb no less...

  • Whoa! Jim Mullens is a bad, bad man. That just lit a fire under my ass. I'm gonna go practice!

  • This is fantastic... what a player - what a musician - what a man!

  • GRamps knows how to playlol

  • That's some thumb. It eludes me how people play on the upstroke with their thumb with such clarity and attack.

  • Such a great solo. Has some elements of swing and some almost Rough House era Scofield as well. Fantastic.

  • Incredibile thumb and control!

  • he nail it good men!! . with due respect, this old master play better than a lot of jazz wana be hot shots.

  • Fantastic playing! This brings fun and swing back into jazz guitar. Made my day! Ron

  • mwl.. this is as close as you can get to virtuosity... he's great!

  • Nice Sweet Georgia brown lick = D.

  • Ya, that's how you do it!

  • Did any1 hear " If I Were A Rich Man" from fiddler on the roof at 1:40 .

    Pure gem.

  • @shanefglynn woah well spotted!

  • @shanefglynn ..hey good spot.... also "Bewitched at 0:44 and Yes-sir thats my baby around 0:23 , what a player haven't listened to Jim for a while , does it gat any better than this.

  • I wouldn't refer to this man as a virutoso, but he is definitely killing it. Great lines, solid time, creative ideas. A very enjoyable performance.

  • As a matter of interest, how would you define virtuosity? Just curious.

  • @arfowen

What a strange question. Virtuosity is outstanding technical ability on a musical instrument -- that's how a dictionary defines it!

  • Thank you, that's my understanding too, but my question was aimed at the person who said that they wouldn't define Jim as a virtuoso - I was curious as to what it was that I was missing, so maybe my question isn't all that strange?

  • Ah sorry - - didn't get the context of what you wrote.

  • If that's all that virtuosity means then calling someone a virtuoso isn't much of a compliment. Technical mastery alone is useless. When it's married with musicality (a sense of rhythm melody and harmony) then it becomes impressive.

  • @awesomewelles90

Ah, then you should provide the Oxford English Dictionary with your refined definition of "technique". But I think technique is a catch-all word that covers rhythm, harmonic knowledge and melody. It's all technical.

  • What in God's name are you blathering about?

  • @awesomewelles90

Exactly -- you need a dictionary, as I said!

  • Nah you need to learn how to make your point clearly. Or maybe you don't have one!

  • love those arpeggio bits-dont know what they are but i want to find out-sound great

  • A real treasure for us to share. I'm already looking for more!

  • Matt Skelton (drums) is a really great player also, and a really nice guy! Great trio.

  • That is some TASTY phrasing.

And wow; I can't believe that he can play that well with just his thumb. I've seen some other guys use this technique, and it always baffles me.

  • prefer it to the 70's style

  • WOW....he's burning!!!

  • The hardest working thumb in jazz.

I have been privileged to play with Jim on a number of occasions - one can only smile and shake one's head in disbelief at the experience and feel. Every note, every placement and the structure of his solos are liked they've been planned meticulously - the one-take king and true legend.

  • best player I have ever seen, bar none

  • call the fire department

  • Man, this guy is ON FIRE!!

  • lol yeah he is! i first heard jim play with terry calleir liked him ever since i never seen this before thanks germanjazz for this loved it man look at him play you know hes enjoying himself and feeling it so cool he doesnt seem to use a pick jus hes thumb people tell me i should use a pick but i never have done, word mr mullen peacenlove

  • Wow!Jim just fantastic!Hope to catch up with you one of these days. love from Molly Duncans little sis.

  • phenomenal!

  • What a guy. He should be much more well known than he is, though i am sure he is among the people who matter.

  • The ledgend that is Jim Mullen!

  • Nice!! And his quotes are cool too

  • sick technique, kinda like john abercrombie
