The Israelis used the -E model to devastating effect during the 1973 Yom Kippur war. Bear in mind, however, that the Vietnamese pilots were far better trained than their Arab counterparts.
Funny, in the English dub, every time they fire a missile it's: "Fox 2... Splash 1, etc." I think it's funny, because not everyone uses that lingo and they're mercenaries, so I wouldn't expect them to say anything at all.
By the way drdormin, inert missiles have all fins, as only serve to point the target in training ... In addition, the L model sidewinder missiles are, so are blue.

@drdormin well, dropping wing tank before dogfight is usual, to reduce wing load and drag. also mig21 without flare is normal. mig21 in vietnam doesnt have it, they usually surrive by out ran a missile going to mach 2 dive. however, ridiculous part is when f8 got hit by 23mm only leaving bullet holes. russian gun is usually fitted ammo config like this, HE,AP,HEx2,TracerAP for each 5 rounds being fired. 23mm HE shell would ripp that f8 into peices if it hit its just too unreal! but i like it:D

For a BVR combat plane designed without a gun F4 was armed with nothing but malfunctioning missiles, it shouldn't even be engaging a dogfight normally.

Yes migs have shot some F4 Phantoms in Vietnam but for only one reason: the first Phantoms sent there had no machine gun,they only had long and middle range missiles so if the Migs could get close enough the Phantoms were defenseless.That's why theyve "fixed"gun pod under them but there weapon system was not built for it so it was not really effective.

I'll say it again, the anime is depicting an Extemely famous F-8 tactic used during Vietnam against Mig's of all types. By going verticle Shin plays to the advantages of the F-8 Crusader with its superior weight to thrust ratio. Shin first plane in A88 is the F-8E.. then after he looses the F-8 he buys a F-5E.. then from here it differs acording to the version. Manga and Ova says that after he losses the F-5 he gets an F-20 Tigershark. In this anime he simply buys another F-5E. In the Manga while he waited for either the F-5 or the F-20 Saki lent him a F-15
Why did that f-8 pilot had his hair in front of eyes. It was probably decreasing his ability to see MIGs better and one reason why he ejected. Also why there wasnt visors in his helmet? In what year that area88 takes place?
As you know "good guys" pilots never use visors... visors are for bad guys ^^
As for the year its more or less believed it takes place in 1984. A calendar is vissible and while not year is vissible you can say day placing.. and its either 1979 or 1984.. In the original OVA F/A-18s could be seen and the Hornet entered service in 1983 so 1984 is acepted

It can shoot missiles at rangers greater than 10+ miles and has an enhanced ECM system. Cambodia is planning to upgrader their 20-24 MiG-21bis to lancers. I think romania has already done that.

For a BVR combat plane designed without a gun F4 was armed with nothing but malfunctioning missiles, it shouldn't even be engaging a dogfight normally.
History Channel documented lots of F4 dogfight where their missiles just drop dead or fail to explode, didn't they?

I'm not talking whether F8 is good in dogfight, just stating the fact F4 designs were plagued with serious and stupid problems.
So, F8 is a better plane than F4 by default. Not that I think its better in a dogfight but it IS a better plane.

In Vietnam the F-8 had a shotdown-ratio of 18:3! And this was the best ratio of any amerian plane!! So, for me there`s no doubt about it, which was the fighter over Vietnam!! It´s also called the MIG-Master!!

The first to introduce heat seeking missiles into active battlefield... By then the Mig-21 had only the main gun and unguided rocket propelled ordinance pods... It was outdated at the vietnam war, and I think that cause of it's mass production was later updated, with better avionics... Check wiki for sure....

Yes migs have shot some F4 Phantoms in Vietnam but for only one reason: the first Phantoms sent there had no machine gun,they only had long and middle range missiles so if the Migs could get close enough the Phantoms were defenseless.That's why theyve "fixed"gun pod under them but there weapon system was not built for it so it was not really effective.

The one MiG-21 was PO'ed that his wingman was shot down and tried to avenge him! Makes me wonder that if shin did decide to bug out would they have pursued him and tried to shoot his ass down.

I'll say it again, the anime is depicting an Extemely famous F-8 tactic used during Vietnam against Mig's of all types. By going verticle Shin plays to the advantages of the F-8 Crusader with its superior weight to thrust ratio. Unfortunately for Shin his parts dealer McCoy is rather shadey at times and has sold him a defective compressor.

Trust to weight ratio:
F-8E Crusader : 0.62
MIG-21 : 1.02 (1.13 with the "emergency" power)
the MIG-21 literally PWNS the Crusader in power to weight ratio and speed.. the Crusader is more agile tought. A crusader pilot must keep the fight in the horizontal turn where the MIG-21 lacks and avoid going vertical .. Thats basic ACM theory

Shin first plane in A88 is the F-8E.. then after he looses the F-8 he buys a F-5E.. then from here it differs acording to the version. Manga and Ova says that after he losses the F-5 he gets an F-20 Tigershark. In this anime he simply buys another F-5E. In the Manga while he waited for either the F-5 or the F-20 Saki lent him a F-15

Different versions of MiG-21 had different gun arrangements.
MiG-21F had two NR-30 cannons on the sides of the fuselage.
Vietnam-era MiG-21PF had no internal gun, & often carried a 23mm gunpod on the centerline pylon.
Post-Vietnam MiG-21MF has an internal GSh-23 slightly ahead of the centerline pylon.

Why did that f-8 pilot had his hair in front of eyes. It was probably decreasing his ability to see MIGs better and one reason why he ejected. Also why there wasnt visors in his helmet? In what year that area88 takes place?

As you know "good guys" pilots never use visors... visors are for bad guys ^^
As for the year its more or less believed it takes place in 1984. A calendar is vissible and while not year is vissible you can say day placing.. and its either 1979 or 1984.. In the original OVA F/A-18s could be seen and the Hornet entered service in 1983 so 1984 is acepted

The MiG-21 Lancer could kick the MiG-21-93's butt! Play some ace combat I see? The Lancer was an Israeli Aerospace Industries MiG-21 modernization project. It can shoot missiles at rangers greater than 10+ miles and has an enhanced ECM system. Cambodia is planning to upgrader their 20-24 MiG-21bis to lancers. I think romania has already done that.
