What has 1969 got to do with anything? it wasnt a year that stuck out for Skinheads, 1967 was bigger for Skins musically, as was their numbers.

Sham 69 was the first time I saw that year connected to Skinheads, despite them being punks.

So can someone tell me what the 'spirit of 69' means (apart from oral sex of course), its relevance to Skinhead culture, and why?

@dortyhoor 69 was the year that skinheads got their name after an article in the daily mirror naming them so, agree about the spirit of 69 though a phrase overused by thick yanks

@brikel They were called that before 69, I had a West Ham programme from 1968 that mentioned Skinhead Hooligans, I gave it to a friend that treasures it. Cant remember now who they were playing now though.

Maybe the year that the scene broke into the public mind via the papers?

@dortyhoor they may have been known as skinheads before 69 but they were also known by other names such as peanut boys as well, the daily mirror article sort of made the name official. that being said ive been a skinhead since 1976 and i still have no fucking idea what the spirit of 69 is supposed to be

@dortyhoor Not true mate. There were very few skins in 67. They hit the news in '69 and by '71 towns up and down the country were full of skinhead/suedhead fashions. By 73 that first wave had disappeared.

good old Joe hawkins,Top days top music , still got every richard allen book all good, although Dragon skins was a bit dodgey, used to get em from woolies while we were nicking fishing weights to fish off the pier the good old 70's

Peopl tend to buy the dodgy fake once from the market round the corner. i still try to support the small business.
