The message I get from this is that terrorism works. You can blow up a hotel and kill 5 people, get 14 years and air time or blow an airplane out of the sky and serve 7 years, as long as your conviction is true to your beliefs then its alright. Despite the violent history of their country in Ireland the English are fundamentally a decent people and I say that as an Irish citizen. We cannot hold the current English generation responsible for the sins of their fathers and likewise it is very humbling to see Jo and Harvey display such humanity to Patrick Magee. Pat was an honourable IRA volunteer and cannot be faulted for his beliefs indeed militarily Brighton was a very clever and brave operation. Hopefully we can ALL move on from this.

You can blow up a hotel and kill 5 people, get 14 years and air time or blow an airplane out of the sky and serve 7 years, as long as your conviction is true to your beliefs then its alright. Let's hope all warring communities can draw inspiration from the solutions found to the seemingly intractable "troubles" in Northern Ireland, and also become reconciled.
If people try hard enough, solutions can be found to all conflicts. It's just a question of stopping the hatred, and trying to build bridges between people.

Pat Magee would not achieve any more if he asked for forgiveness or expressed regret any more than jo Berry would achieve anything he she called Pat a bastard and murderer. During the struggle there were members of the IRA who were thinking, feeling human beings just as there were in the security forces. The north may one become part of a united Ireland and it may not but Pat and Jo have started a process that will help to heal all of the lives blighted by the war.
