@olwltd lets see widely considered biggest band of the 70's, Jimmy Page always considered by peers and polls as one of the10 greatest guitarists ever, Rock n ROLL hof, 2nd highest selling rock act ever behind Beatles, shattered every attendance record in the 70's, influenced nearly every major rock act that followed them, oh yeah they were way overrated. Are you on drugs?
@plantationful I agree with you that Jimmy Page is a better guitarist than Richards and I know Zeppelin has sold more records but that dosen't make them a better band. I would say Jagger/Richards is far better songwriters than Page who stole some of his most famous riffs, lyrics from black music. Stones has a more varied sound unlike Zeppelin (most of their records is musicaly pretty close to eachother). Both are great bands through.
@olwltd Hey man, sorry to go off on you. I love the Stones and know all their music too. Zep gets a bad rap for stealing the blues. Sure they did not always credit lyrics but the arrangements and riffs were usually very innovative. I think Zep had a much more original sound than the Stones. That being said its very hard to choose between the bands in their primes. Zep 1,2,3,4, Houses, and Physical or Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers, Let IT Bleed, Exile, Goats Head Soup. Both great I agee
Just like saying the Rolling Stones is Keith Richards........BULLSHIT. Sorry Keith but I think your full of shit also. Led Zeppelin was a powerhouse group. All 4 members was absolutely phenomenal. They show what you can become when 4 elite musicians come together.
Keith tries to catergorize Zep. This is impossible. Led Zep were completely unique and broke so much new ground. All anyone has to do is look at the enormous influence Zep continues to have on rock n roll. Go through any high school and you will hear all about Zep, not much about the Stones. I think the Stones are great, but they were overtaken by Zep. Page had more skill than Keith, great player, writer, and producer, Keith largely just a great songwriter.
The Rolling Stones are just a white Blues/pop band. Great showmen, great theater, almost a parody of what they do. @kingsindiandefence At their worst they were a white parodying blues pop band. At their best, they were extremely moving and exotic. Whats your point? Zeppelin is better? Shit, I dig them both at different times. Opinions vary. I do actually think Zeppelin is better. If I have to say. Lets not completely stone the Stones though. They are very intriguing despite our annoyance because they just wont go away! And, this jerk is too fucked to be talking at this time apparently ;)
@AbsintheColour I think The Stones are very good, great in fact. As someone said they were in the right place at the right time. With Jagger they were a very exotic band, without Jagger they would have been a good solid white blues band. Jaggers bad boy, rebel pouting, arrogant sexual strutting, the honky tonk lyrics, back door men, booty shaking mommas all set loose on 60s teens free to shake off prim. But it was nothing new, just blues, Jagger was a lightning rod.
@AbsintheColour Zep, though not the only ones were doing something with the blues and changing them a little. For this it needed a group of tight musicians, not just Jimmy P. Plants vocal was unique at the time? Jimmy explored and improvised, Richards is just a solid Riff player, nothing great. This is just answering Richards and the implication the Stones were an all round band and Zep were Jimmy.
@AbsintheColour Zep had a bigger influence on up coming bands than The Stones who were just a great white blues band with a sexy singer, though great media, great stars. I assume each member of Zep had an input into the part their own instrument played in making the overall sound of Zep and then had to play this hour after hour on stage. So they are great as a group or not at all. What is Richards talking about? He should know one bad musician makes a bad band.
Poor old keef, i love him but he's a likkle out of sorts there. A line from Zep unplugged "beautiful people , there quiet council keep" Or if you would like it from the Toe te Ching, it go's like this.
Led Zeppelin is a collaboration of 4 extremely talented musicians. Each member had almost magical ability, to say that Jimmy Page was the band is just pure ignorance
He doesn't know anything about music and he proves it right here.. How the hell he dares to say something like that, while at least half of the people on the planet that hold a drumstick today are influenced by John Bonham. Not to mention JPJ and Plant..
Jimmy Page is my favourite guitarist and all, but if Led Zeppelin is Jimmy Page then why did Led Zeppelin die with Bonzo? Plant is doing his solo stuff, Jones had Them Crooked Vultures, they're doing fine on their own. But Jimmy... Jimmy is just busy getting old and gray. I want a new Jimmy Page album!
Keith Richards seems to be jealous of Zeppelin's musical prowess, Led Zeppelin were a super group..the rolling stones were just around at the right place/right time....Keith Richards is average guitarist @ best..nothing more
what an ignorant statement. especially coming from such a talented musician. sounds like he is bitter because Led Zeppelin sold more records in the 70's. and The Beatles sold more records in the 60's. They were never on top (as far as sales).
@ivar3145 if the uploader hadn't cut the video you would have heard him say "they never took of for me musically" which is a subjective answer that he is entitled too have. Personally I dont agree with him since Zep and Stones are two of my favourite band. By the way do you mean that a band like Led Zeppelin cant sell records even though they disbanded long ago?
@Rifflead Balls and vigor with no heart behind it is just pointless strutting: Plant's vocal gymnastics, Page's multi-layered masturbation with mindless xerox-repeating riffs, Bonham's neanderthal pounding. For soul, and not just stealing old blues and folk songs from Willie Dixon, Jake Holmes, Ritchie Valens, Spirit, etc., and turning up the volume, see Wild Horses, Gimme Shelter, You Can't Always Get What, etc.
Their music started as a gruffer, faster version of Chicago blues, but eventually the Stones pioneered British rock's tone of ironic detachment and wrote about offhand brutality, sex as power, and other taboos..
After the Seventies, the Stones lost their dangerous aura, but it didn't hurt their popularity: They've become icons of an elegantly debauched, world-weary decadence, elder statesmen..
@40AcreMule The Beatles held the top band honors in The NME annual poll throughout the duration of their existence as a band. LZ got theirs right after the Beatles broke up but sadly lost it in 76' while they were still active, touring & recording. That's halfway their time. Talk about accomplishment.
@40AcreMule Typical zep fan, I couldn't expect any less. Well the Beatles (like it or not) are still considered THE greatest band of all time. LZ was never able to beat them. Actually you're talking about LZ 2 knocking off "abbey road" off the #1 spot. Yeah but every Beatles album was knocked off the top spot at some point, no great accomplishment there. LZ have been beaten too you know so what's your point.
)) guys it's simple ... This guy is guitarist )) that's why he thinks that led zeppelin is Jimmy Page.. I love Led Zeppelin and I like Rolling Stones. They are good but far from Zepp )) And in the and i have to say that Rolling Stones is Mick Jagger ))
My love of the Rolling Stones knows no bounds but each member of Zeppelin possessed more musical tallent and passion in their little finger than the Stones put together. Sounds like someone has some jealousy issues.
Its only the people who are bitter about their success that talk about them nicking stuff. And Keith din like any music that would not be world weary and a smooth tune for a crackhead! The artist is always the poor ruffian, the outsider to him. And he thinks that's how they got to stay forever- always done in by the world. He din like Sir Mick Jagger being Knighted either!
@Rifflead Yeah keith seems bitter. That's his loss, there's no need for it. Same can be said about zeppelin particularly jimmy being a bit bitter about the beatles being the biggest band in the world. He seems to want to be beat the beatles but he can't & never will however zeppelin is an amazing band no question. I'm not bitter about their success but I'm not blind either. They did nick stuff from blues & folk artists. No one with half a brain could deny that, they just got away with it.
@fairyfellermaster Keith ain't bitter - he just knows that Zep is basically Tenacious D without the jokes, a ridiculous adolescent, D & D imagery band that confuses showing off with soul and couldn't find the heart of the blues if it was beating in front of their faces.
@fairyfellermaster Page has never expressed any bitterness about The Beatles. Indeed, LZ has beat The Beatles at a couple of things. In 1969 LZ's first album out-sold The Beatles last recorded album (Abbey Road) in the US by 2-to-1. After almost 40 years, LZ still has the most requested song in radio history (Stairway to Heaven). The Beatles most requested song? Yellow Submarine. And its not requested that often except by 5 year-olds.
Listen to House of Blues release: This Ain't No Tribute Blues Cube. And, you will know how many old Blues reappeared in Zeppelin catalogue and how many reappeared with Rolling Stones, how many with Dylan, how many with Janis Joplin, and these are only the known ones or taken in entirety. There are so many bits from here and there too.. Look, it all came out of blues, and these are very good artists, and they could take it forward. LZ was most innovative, multifaceted and original of all!
You gotta wonder how hard it is for Jagger to play in a band & have a relationship for decades with this dude. Vica versa for Richards with an ego maniacal narcissistic dude like Jagger. Spare a thought though for all the other poor bastards who've had to play for decades in the same with both of them!!!
Imagine, If it was decided that Willie Dixon will write all the songs for all the bands in the world.. so, everybody is playing the same songs.. Led Zeppelin will still be the ultimate rush, will still fill all stadiums more than any other band, will still be the greatest of them all. They will be better by far. 'cos THEY GOT SKILLS! THEY ARE A BAND OF BETTER MUSICIANS! That would have pissed off Keith and Pete Townsend even more! (Songwriting: Mick/Keith, John Lennon got to be best)
Stones were never like the Zeppelin in many ways. Which is great for rock and roll- it makes it bigger! BUT Keith Richards is so narrow-minded. As of the Stones themselves, their best music is from when Mick Taylor was in the Band. And did Keith get along well with Mick??
Keith Richards pretty much thinks he invented rock n roll...Led Zeppelin are a much better band than the Rolling Stones ever were...he's probably just jealous and cannot admit it
@marbleheadband How can you call Keith a "rippin off mofo" when a loooooooot of LZ best work was "borrowed" then credited as something they claimed as an original song they wrote. Not trying to break your balls man, just being honest.
@tomtom255 But Keith did make a lot of money by playing old blues. And if you try playing their covers, you would realize they took more than you thought. But there's got to be nothin wrong wid that- growing from blues to Rock n Roll! Keith 's got to have been really smart about it. If you are stones fan, how would you rate Mick Taylor's work? And how many credits did he get wid the Stones? Its always got to be who performed.
@tomtom255 NIN has done a ver of Immigrant Song. And you think.. it doesn't blow your mind like the original. It doesn't even measure up! But when LZ took something from Willie Dixon and made it their own, they even topped the original. I mean if you leave out the old heads or the honors students of old school blues, the rest of them born in the last thirty years have gotten to know the blues and respect it through bands like LZ. And LZ is the Best. Somehow, so far, their power is unmatched.
@tomtom255 ....just my dumbass opinion,.......nothing personal either.. just our different attitudes towards rock....i love the stones & played them for years in cover bands because i coudn't play a lot of what jimmy page was doing at the time...but i learned & i'm amazed at the chord structures. just listen to 'four sticks' or 'kasmir' or 'achilles last stand'.......unbelievable...... while keith sucks on ciggies & booze playing G,C,D & getting a tude about it......
Hes a prick. He thinks Hendrix stole the Purple Haze riff from him. And here, apart from Page he writes off Zeppelin. He didnt like Hendrix becuase Jimi was a better guitar player than him and Jimi got the right Chicks and he didnt.
@capetown99 ha, right on cape town. he is right about one thing. If you want to cut the story short Led Zeppelin is about Jimmy Page. His comment about them never taking off... its like WTF are you talking about? Jealous much Keith?
I thought Plant, Jones and Bonham were just as much about Led Zeppelin as Page was.
Thats why they broke up after Bonham died. They couldnt continue without him. But Keith is too ignorant to even mention that. He just sees Page as a threat.
@capetown99 I think if you read some of the biographies of the band that are out there , and see what occurred to bring them all together , and keep them all together producing music at such a high level you would agree that it was Jimmy Page that made it happen. Not to detract from Plant, Bonham and Jones ability they were all the best of the best, but Page was really the leader of the group and the man who put the band together.
i disagree with Keith Richards.....i mean yeah jimmy is one of the most influential guitarrists and stuff. but john bonham is also a huge influence on drummers, just like robert is an influence to vocalists, and john paul jones is a great influence on bassists and was a multi instrumental musician.
also when bonzo died there was no more zeppelin,so you could also have said bonham was zeppelin, or any other member.
Led Zeppelin is all four members together. that LED FUCKING ZEPPELIN!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Rock'n'roll like Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith and a lot of other bands, but the Rolling stones is not a band I really like, their songs don't make me dream like Stairway to heaven or Dream On for instance can do to me...
Morover, with a statement like Keith's here, I don"t regret at all
@jackgingeranderic - WHAT? JPJ is one of the greatest and most influential bass/keyboard players ever, John Bonham's drumming set a whole blueprint for metal and grunge, Plant's dynamic range remains one of the greatest ever, along with Maynard Keenan, Chris Cornell and Ronnie Dio - if anything Page, who was sloppy and unreliable, was the weak link in Zep. Bit like a more capable Keith Richards, really! Zep DID take off - even more than the Stones. This is what envy does...
Keef is Keef. What kind of statement did you expect? Something rosy and articulate? I love both the Stones and Zep! I tend to think that Zep did indeed take off... but that's my opinion. I do, however, agree with the statement that Page is Led Zeppelin. HE formed the band out of the last remnants of the Yardbirds and invited the others in. That doesn't diminish their contributions, and Keith didn't say that whatsoever. So just relax. It's Keith for crying out loud!
@RFreigeldorff your rite but thts not sayin shit led zeppelin is incomparable to any other band stones are good their singer mick jagger is good just not as good as plant guitar i mean come on who can fuck with jimmy paige except hendrix drums they got my favorite drummer of all time john bonham people say they zep was workin with supernatural forces and when you watch them live i can c that but their amateurs musically next to hendrix he had more soul than anyone ever to live
hendrix is out of reach, no question. but that is as an individual - it is a sad thing that he never quite got the co-musicians he would have deserved.
as for zep, I believe the supernatural force was bonzo, quite simply. powerful and swinging, plus a taste for good sounding sets. if bill ward only had had a bit more taste and focus..
@RFreigeldorff no they aren't, you are comparing a band that made 9 albuns to a band that made almost 30 albuns. Stones were the rivals of the Beatles, the bad boys of rock and roll, you can't say a thing like that, but yes, richards was stupid saying that.
i see your point and agree it is impertinent to try and pee at the leg of someone like keef. my respect for him just grew while reading his autobiography. nevertheless, musically at least, i never quite understood why the stones were considered rivals to the beatles. this is simply not the same league. bad boys yes, but i just don't see the musical genius. lennon/mccartney, brian wilson and page if you wish, were in a different league.
@steveconn you are absolutely correct the Stones are a great, great band. I cannot stop listening to Sticky Fingers. Have you really heard all of the Zep's work because it sounds like you are dismissive of them. Part of music is showing your skills and writing about what any 20 yr. old might write about. Zep has great acoustic, understated music too. Give it a chance, its ok to like both.
@plantationful I've heard everything of Zep's, from the early blues covers albums to the later stuff, and you never get the sense all their multi-layered rock, arabic, celtic, etc. explorations were in service of anything except to say "look how great we are." Just showing off their skills rather than getting to the heart and meaning of the music. That's great when your 20, but when your over thirty it's sad. And on the acoustic stuff Plant sounds lost, like he's just waiting to screech again.
@steveconn so zeppelin has no heart or feeling in their music ok WHY THE FUCK AM I BODERING TO ANSWER TO A FUCKING IGNORANT THAT HAS NO CLUE WHAT MUSIC IS?
@steveconn 1st english isnt my mother language so if you wanna show how superior you are make a post in portuguese and then ill be here to mock you...2nd if you think that your ability to write good english is correlated to music taste then you just proved what was already impolied you know 0 about music(comparing tenacious d with led zeppelin just stupid)
@10004m Why? Tenacious D just like Zep - pompous adolescent visions of Dungeons and Dragons fantasy worlds that takes itself too seriously, no lyrics about adult issues, loud and stupid. And if your english is too bad, stay on portuguese sites.
He got one thing right. LZ is Jimmy Page. No Page--No Zeppelin pure and simple. All the rest of them would have had great careers without him for sure. But Jimmy and that Hammer of the Gods Les Paul of his would have found some other mates to get on with and there would have been a LZ with or without the other cats. My God U can hum those mother fucking licks of his. Every fucking guitar player on the planet is jealous as hell of JP! Not only the licks but he WAS the Epitome of A ROCK STAR!!
I think what Keith is saying in a fairly undiplomatic way,is if there is one player that Zep could have never done without it would be Jimmie Page whose writing and arranging is second to none in rock music and an indispensable signature element of the band's sound.
Both great bands undoubtedly. Richards and Page are both amazing guitarists as well. I don't think you can compare either bands. John Paul Jones is an gifted man who definitely deserves more credit in Led Zeppelin.
i wished there would of been more songs like the lemon song, where its a lovely drum and bass groove shared between the best rhythm section of a rock band to ever have lived
John Paul Jones didnt have a lot of the limelight, but when he got it, he nailed it
fuck you keith. disappointing to hear this and pete townshend says near the same thing. for guitar players like them to say such bullshit. zeppelin is on its own no band comes near
Zep just show-off adolescents compared to the feeling and depth with which the Stones interpreted the blues. Gimme Shelter and Moonlight Mile have adult power; Stairway and Kashmmir is ultimately some fifteen year old banging his head in his room.
@andrea585ny Zep's first 2 albums were blues covers (though they credited themselves), but the point is even their forays into middle eastern and folk, with their layered melodies and endless changes, is basically about Zep showing how great the band is, not them getting in touch with actual meaning in the music. That's why songs like Gimme and Moonlight are better-not because they're more complicated musically, but because they get to a root of deep adult feeling beyond just D & D showing-off.
PFFFF.... Obviously never heard John Paul Jones play his badass basslines, Robert Plant's unique voice and John Bonham's awesome drum solo's. I'm not hating on Jimmy Page, I love the guy, but stating that Led Zeppelin was just Jimmy Page is ridiculous.
Led zepplin are the better band, best drummer (RIP), third best guitarist ever ( behind Hendrix and Clapton) better vocal artist and an excelent all round support bass/mandolin/keyboard/piano player. They were wilder and wrote better. The rolling stones are now shit, all they do is go around gig to gig in their 70,s trying to get with 18 year old groupies, Zeppelin lay back and resurface for a private session now and again :(
I agree that Zep is way more than just Jimmy but, for cats whose feelings Keith hurt that are saying,"Mick is the RS". You are either in complete vertigo of the world or, you never heard "The bitch is back" or Mick's other solo stuff that just totally flopped in comparison to the Stones. Try listening to Beast of Burden with no guitars in it and only Mick singing and POOF! There no longer is a song. one love
lets face it... keith richards is overrated. He never was a great guitarplayer and will never be. He wrote some nice songs with jagger, but thats it. In addition he seems to be restricted in terms of bands and music at all. Led Zeppelin was jimmy page? Of couse jimmy has his own sound and was very special... but you can never reduce a band like LZ on one musician.
It's pretty arrogant to be so dismissive of a band on a level with your own but he knows what he knows and that is the Rolling Stones and blues history. Zep was a band where all four were important, the Stones,...well only two were. Long live Keef!

Rifflead 1 month ago
@Rifflead Yeah keith seems bitter. That's his loss, there's no need for it. Same can be said about zeppelin particularly jimmy being a bit bitter about the beatles being the biggest band in the world. He seems to want to be beat the beatles but he can't & never will however zeppelin is an amazing band no question. I'm not bitter about their success but I'm not blind either. They did nick stuff from blues & folk artists. No one with half a brain could deny that, they just got away with it.
fairyfellermaster 1 month ago
@fairyfellermaster Keith ain't bitter - he just knows that Zep is basically Tenacious D without the jokes, a ridiculous adolescent, D & D imagery band that confuses showing off with soul and couldn't find the heart of the blues if it was beating in front of their faces.
steveconn 1 month ago

LZ was most innovative, multifaceted and original of all!

tomtom255 1 month ago

I thought Plant, Jones and Bonham were just as much about Led Zeppelin as Page was.
Thats why they broke up after Bonham died. They couldnt continue without him. But Keith is too ignorant to even mention that. He just sees Page as a threat.
capetown99 2 months ago
@capetown99 I think if you read some of the biographies of the band that are out there , and see what occurred to bring them all together , and keep them all together producing music at such a high level you would agree that it was Jimmy Page that made it happen. Not to detract from Plant, Bonham and Jones ability they were all the best of the best, but Page was really the leader of the group and the man who put the band together.

Give it a chance, its ok to like both.
plantationful 1 month ago
@plantationful I've heard everything of Zep's, from the early blues covers albums to the later stuff, and you never get the sense all their multi-layered rock, arabic, celtic, etc. explorations were in service of anything except to say "look how great we are." Just showing off their skills rather than getting to the heart and meaning of the music. That's great when your 20, but when your over thirty it's sad. And on the acoustic stuff Plant sounds lost, like he's just waiting to screech again.

Zep just show-off adolescents compared to the feeling and depth with which the Stones interpreted the blues. Gimme Shelter and Moonlight Mile have adult power; Stairway and Kashmmir is ultimately some fifteen year old banging his head in his room.
steveconn 2 months ago
@steveconn Strange comment, when you stop to consider
that most people think of Zep as a blues band. Also strange that you picked
Stairway and Kashmir - two of their least bluesy tunes. Stairway starts out
slow and folky and ends as straight rock. Kashmir has a middle eastern
sound that is somewhat subdued and melodic it is also more musically
mature than either Gimme or Moonlight. The Stones and Zep are equally
great bands, denegrating one to elevate the other makes no sense to me
andrea585ny 2 months ago
@andrea585ny Zep's first 2 albums were blues covers (though they credited themselves), but the point is even their forays into middle eastern and folk, with their layered melodies and endless changes, is basically about Zep showing how great the band is, not them getting in touch with actual meaning in the music. That's why songs like Gimme and Moonlight are better-not because they're more complicated musically, but because they get to a root of deep adult feeling beyond just D & D showing-off.
