Why don't they just start putting Linux on all laptops they sell in stores... wouldn't that make them cheaper? Then for people who absolutely must have windows can just buy it.
@S0Iari Then no one would purchase a laptop with Linux on it, it doesn't play games, it doesn't have MS office/Photoshop 'Name brand' programs people are used to, plus linux is a hassel to deal with. No company would 'commit suicide' by doing such actions.
@iGarthi Linux has openoffice and libre office-clones of Microsoft office. Paint programs are available, GIMP is most popular, has a full suite of add-ons for media editing. Money would be made for packaging, and literature and/or tech support.
Linux isn't for everyone, but I say people should atleast check it out.
@upallhours9 Openoffice/libre office sucks, they can't be compared to MS office, you're stretching the word clone. GIMP isn't comparable to Photoshop, and Linux is an overall difficult operating system to use. No one wants to take time going through a command line interface to install programs, nor would they 'downgrade' to linux because it's free. I've checked linux ubuntu out from version 9.04(I believe), 10.04, then to the new shitty 11.10.
@iGarthi Yeah, without a doubt, open source software just develops slower in a capitalistic society because there is only loss of time when you could be making money... essentially you are punished in a monetary system for working for open source.... Windows is a much better operating system... and you throw even more money in the mix and you get Macs... so where there is financial gain is where we're going to see most progress until some day our economic system possibly changes.
@S0Iari I disagree. The difference between building open source and as a job, is people doing it as their job are doing it because they have to. Open source is doing it because they want to, and genuinely enjoy it in their spare time. I think Debian systems completely outclass Windows, at least for the things I do.
@upallhours9 I've connect to the internet with firefox, then I was like 'what next?' I then tried to install compiz fusion but it looks like ubuntu doesn't come pre-installed with AMD drivers. I couldn't use my WiFi card but that wasn't a problem as I had temporarily moved my computer next to the router. Compiz fusion installed successfully, started using the effects. No games, slow firefox, slow office programs. Installing applications far too difficult for me to continue using the OS. sudo? No
@iGarthi That's true, people are familiar with Windows and that does keep most people on it... I think Linux will always lag behind, I tried Linux and it just seems kinda like a Mac from the early 90's.
Holy shit! I have the same laptop!!!!!!!!!!!! I installed Xubuntu 10.04 and I love it. Sooo much better than when I had XP running. Only problem I had was printer drivers but I was able to fix that. I am now running the KDE environment on it and it works perfectly.
I have this same computer but I need to upgrade the RAM. So far I haven't had the money and the fact that I might be getting a new computer all together has been holding me back.
Currently I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and used Mac4lin to make it look like a Mac. I like the way Macs look but I hate the price. I think my next video is going to be price comparisons between Mac and other custom machines.
The worst experience was installing a printer, had to shutdown the pc, reboot, select printer from a list, shutdown again, try to print a test page-one attempt got it!
What peice of hardware are you referring to, specifically?
All 'buntus, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc, have similar habits.
Are you referring to scanner, graphics card, other? Perhaps I can help.
no man... it is not... if you want an all-working-out-of-the-box linux OS try linux mint based in ubuntu... or even better...Pardus! ir got my weird ass usb wireless adapter at once
I never used ndiswrapper. When things got to intense in past when dealing with UBUNTU family, i just re-installed the OS. Usually that fixes things.
The only time I had problems with Ubuntu series was getting my updates too often. Now I don't get every update as soon as it comes out. I now wait a few weeks and wait for them to go into double digits before I download them. Also, if I find certain hardware needs it, then I just wait for the updates.
I love LM but the only thing I hate about LM XFCE is you need a lot of ram to install it. I'm not sure why LM needs more installation ram than Xubuntu.
did you have problems with the wifi? if so, did you do the 'ndiswrapper procedure'? i tried for two days and gave up... nice vid btw, laptop still runnin' strong after all those years.
i have a gateway laptop running windows vista... now i am also running wubi linux... and ubuntu linux on it... but it has wire less internet connecting problems.

@S0Iari Excellent question. There is NO money to be made when stuff is given away for FREE.
I believe DELL has stepped up, and offered PCs with Ubuntu. Yes there is going to be a cost for the materials, and thats a start.
Don't forget,LINUX is FREE. There may be charges for configuring and supporting it.
More people should ask the same question you did.

@MrC0MPUT3R Hey- that's neat! I like KDE, but found it abit resource-heavy.
I also found KDE had some issues with dependencies, and repositories, currently running Ubuntu.
In future when I acquire newer, faster machines, I will give KDE another serious try.
My first stumbling block with KDE was printer drivers also, it was short-lived as the fix was simple enough.
upallhours9 1 year ago
To luckykingjordan, leonardo9338, et all others with resolution problems...the most popular culprit is un-supported video cards.
The most popular fix is to contact your video card manufacturer, visit the site, and check for updates.
Hope this helps.
upallhours9 1 year ago
i hav the same problem, it runs at 800 x 600 or sumin
luckykingjordan 1 year ago
i like xubuntu but i can get the resolution to work as i like 1024x768
leonardo9338 1 year ago
@leonardo9338 It may be an issue with drivers. Try checking the unrestricted, backport repositories in xubtuntu.
Look for "X" such as x.org repositories.
Also try ubuntu forums on ubuntu home website for similar issues.
Try the vendor's website of the monitor, and see if they offer Linux patches, drivers.
It may just be compatible, just try another suitable resolution.
Sorry, I wish I could help more. Please let me know how things work out.

Linux kind of reminds me of the old days when computers were fun back in the 80s, with the Sinclair ZX81 and Spectrum, BBC Micro, CBM 64, etc.
There's a real hobbyist feel to it but it's also very slick and professional these days.

Hmm I have a 60 GB hard drive on my laptop, and I was thinking about installing Xubuntu. Do you recommend dual boot?
cheadessolupa 2 years ago
Dual boot is fine if you have the patience and know-how to do it.
Frankly, I just backup all my Window$ stuff, then do a straight install of xubuntu, erasing the hard drive.
60GB is plenty!
I believe xububuntu is just less than 5GB, the more apps, etc you add, the more it takes up.
upallhours9 2 years ago
yea my ubuntu hd is 200gb and it only takes up about 10 and i have tons off apps :D
itsbrad212 2 years ago 2
yes. Here are the official specs. 256mb of ram is reccomended ( thats like Nothing) for install and ONLY 1.5 gb of installation space.
marcher22 2 years ago 2
Dual boot is fine.
I recommend whatever works best for you, because it's something you will use every day.
Try dual boot at first, and if you like it, -keep it.
If it doesn't work out, try a standalone install.
Good Luck!
