@TheKyomu2010 This is sad. A man with such a gift pushing it to the brink. Surprised he could hold it from the way he was pushing though around 2min in. Singers have to be careful - if we break this instrument, we can't go and buy a new one no matter how much we're willing to pay.
Yes, in many ways I feel sorry for him. What nature failed to provide he sought to obtain by misguided means. He so desperately wanted to be a heroic tenor but it was not his calling.
as odd as it may look, I like Jose Carreras more than Luciano Pavarotti. Yes, Pavarotti has the mightiest voice ever, but the Spaniard's voice is much more beautiful.
Carreras looks and sounds so wondefully touching, sincere - but there`s nothing womanlike in him. Awesome artist. I only heard something of that kind - that soft poetic charm combined with manly colouring - in the wonderful timbre of my native folk-singers, in Georgia. Hamlet Gonashvily, for example.
For a "personal favorite" interpretation of Mario, I find myself always drawn to Mr. Carreras. Besides the beauty and power of his voice, it seems to me that he has a special affinity for this role. I hope somebody in a master class he gives picks that up!
Thanks for giving me a chance to listen to Mr. Carreras' Tokyo rendition of this aria!
Este solo de JOSE CARRERAS es ùnico...tiene una voz poderosa y muy dulce... le da unos arpegios a su voz excelentes...es un lamento que llega al alma...HERMOOOOSOOOOO!!!!!!
Breathtaking and moving. Carreras is definitely one of the best Cavaradossi in history. It's a shame none of his performances of this role is available on official videos!
What an overwhelming, heartfelt and heartbreaking singing and acting!I wonder, if that emotions are just simulated or if Carreras himself really goes through that feelings evoked by that music, athmosphere, fantasia,...?
This is gorgeous, of course! I like this version - he sings it a bit softer than some of his other versions of this same aria, and it works much better. The natural beauty of his voice can be heard.
@inmylife9 (I recognize you as an uploader - lucky for me) This song was the same for me, then learning he sings all songs with feeling. He will always be the the greatest singer to me....
oh God...soo damn good...i'm sure that if he hadn't been ill he would have been the best tenor in the world, better than PAvarotti. anyway he's definetely one of the greatest and of course my favourite one!
This is how a lyrical tenor destroys his voice. Carreras is the greatest exponent of vocal destruction!

And to think he disliked the role! Said it was "unrewarding"! Fantastic stuff.

This is by far the best!!!
He is Mario Cavaradossi
This is "E lucevan le stelle"
For me, Carreras is the best Mario, Don Jose and Rodolfo.

People should be watching DVD or listen to CD first, practise the time they clap
before they ever buy a damn ticket into the opera house.

I think non of you had ever heard Bocelli...
ayseaysea 4 years ago
Are you kidding? Bocelli? He wished he could sound half as good as Carreras did!
donatello1 4 years ago 9
haha i think that person was just being sarcastic, highlighting how bad bocelli is in comparison. thats why i think they put the "..." at the end.

I wanted to shout Bravo at the end as well. Very expressive; right up there with Placido Domingo in terms of expressiveness and power of voice.
