what about the motor and wires, don't they get damaged by the running water? I researched and everybody suggest using a HVAC cleaner....I'd rather use your method though...
@labilab Nope. Just make sure the unit has no power going to it. Unplug it and you'll be fine. And if it has electronic controls, or even this type of unit, make sure everything in it is DRY before plugging it in. And you should be fine. I was.

@TheHvacdude101 regarding the smell. the styro foam traps dirt that makes it smelly , unlike in LG its made of plastic and not styro foam.
