This movie is an unsung masterpiece and deserves to be brought back ( the original NOT NOT NOT a remake) This is true horror, as opposed to the silly,formulaic crap that passes for horror these days( the endless Saws, Halloweens, Friday the 13ths and on and on and on.) The folks who praise this movie obviously haven't read the book. Compared to the superbly written book the movie is complete garbage. I don't think a movie could do it justice, but they could have done much better.

Niles played the game on his evil twin after Holland was dead and he "became" Holland, just as he became the crow and the magician Chan Wu (that might be the wrong name)BTW before Holland died he killed his father to possess the peregrine ring. (the one which Niles carried around with Holland's finger still in it)
This movie came out when I was 13 and I loved it! I remember having a crush on 'Niles' and 'Holland'. .Wonder what they look like now? I hope a remake isn't done..it was done right the first time. It has been shown on Turner Classic Movies only once. Sure wish they would show it again!
There was an episode of the incredible hulk TV show that stole this plot. That show also stole a plot from the 70s movie "Duel." I like the Hulk but it stole too many plots!
This movie is worse than a horror movie. It really hurts. Ask the actors who played in it. And this is by the same director Robert Mulligan who directed To Kill a Mockingbird who is brilliant at directing children. The Russian woman looks like the old Mrs. Folgers woman. That is what "The Other" is. It's an awful mystery in the Deep South rolled up in a terrible enigmatical freakshow. "Scream!" Where is the baby! Holland! Oh no you didn't! Tell me you didn't write that!

The rate of change towards the end of the movie doesn't match up with how it evolves throughout the rest of it. Therefore it went extinct as it disturbed a lot of people. The shocking part exposing the truth shouldn't have been divulged two-thirds of the way through at the cite of the grave.

@cullmurr Remember the baby in the bottle at the freakshow? The mentioning of the story "the Changeling" while on the swing with his mother? There are clues as to how its going to end. This movie is a mystery on top of being one of those many child / devil movies that came out during that time (The Oman). Psychic ability aside, this story is possible on the psychological level. It is a tragedy. The mother at the beginning of the movie was devestated because of Holland's death.

@brabon1 It should be left as it is, why touch it? This is such a stylish and beautifully shot and told story, not to mention the fine performances, none other than the great Uta Hagen! Today, they would turn it into another cheesy gore-fest with a loud busy soundtrack, and cheap tricks. Niles played the game on his evil twin after Holland was dead and he "became" Holland, just as he became the crow and the magician Chan Wu (that might be the wrong name)BTW before Holland died he killed his father to possess the peregrine ring. (the one which Niles carried around with Holland's finger still in it)

This movie is worse than a horror movie. It really hurts. Ask the actors who played in it. And this is by the same director Robert Mulligan who directed To Kill a Mockingbird who is brilliant at directing children. The Russian woman looks like the old Mrs. Folgers woman. That is what "The Other" is. It's an awful mystery in the Deep South rolled up in a terrible enigmatical freakshow. "Scream!" Where is the baby! Holland! Oh no you didn't! Tell me you didn't write that!

The rate of change towards the end of the movie doesn't match up with how it evolves throughout the rest of it. Therefore it went extinct as it disturbed a lot of people. The shocking part exposing the truth shouldn't have been divulged two-thirds of the way through at the cite of the grave.

@cullmurr Remember the baby in the bottle at the freakshow? The mentioning of the story "the Changeling" while on the swing with his mother? There are clues as to how its going to end. This movie is a mystery on top of being one of those many child / devil movies that came out during that time (The Oman). Psychic ability aside, this story is possible on the psychological level. It is a tragedy. The mother at the beginning of the movie was devestated because of Holland's death.

@brabon1 Naw, they should leave this alone. Hollywood has screwed up too many classics with bad remakes like their Black X-mas one long starring michelle Trachtenberg and even the Friday 13th remake. Even the Willa Ford character "kill" in that movie couldn't save that film. Hollywood has too much money, rely too much on special effects and production is rushed too often to make much good stuff. Let The Other stay the way it is!

@brabon1 It should be left as it is, why touch it? This is such a stylish and beautifully shot and told story, not to mention the fine performances, none other than the great Uta Hagen! Today, they would turn it into another cheesy gore-fest with a loud busy soundtrack, and cheap tricks. If you havnt read the book, the scene in the barn with the pitchfork , is one of the most gruesome things I have ever read. I could only imagine how graphic they would make that today. Not neccesary.

Be on the look out for John Ritter (AKA Jack Tripper from "Three's Company") in a bit part as well as Victor French (from "Little House on the Prairie").

And it was Holland who murdered their father to get hold of the "peregrine ring before he fell down the well( shown in a flashback). I admit the movie ( and book, to some extent) is a little confusing on first viewing but it's worth seeing again

@chyrd My kids are in bed when I take the 30 seconds or so it takes to create accounts. You take nothing away from me, though you'd like to think so. Just because your wife left you and you are adopted might explain your behaviour, it doesn't excuse it. You hate everyone who has what you can't have. See a counsellor and get over it. Shit happens; it just seems to happen more to you than anyone else. That's why you're such an active atheist. You can't believe that God would be that cruel to you.

Just imagine when you report me for cyber-bullying you and it's in the local paper: "43 year-old man cyber-bullied on YouTube!"
