Diamond Dave rules! He's the frontman that makes Van Halen alive again, fitting like a glove. Hagar was okay, really not bad at all, but Dave is colourful, having charisma, enjoying it, making martial art jumps and as a matter of fact, I love the way he sings and screams. That guy is ALIVE! Wolfgang is doing a tremendous job! Not many if you out there, who only seem to care about his weight, can say that you're playing bass with Van Halen, when you're 17-years young...

@kevinnotevan Mike's just not a very melodic player. He added nothing to VH's rhythm section, which is why a 16 yr old could fill his shoes. Also bass and drum solos are relics from corporate stadium rock at it's most bloated and self indulgent (Spinal Tap). Mike's "solos" were little more than feedback and theatrics. That said, MA's backing vocal is key to VH's distinctive sound. His harmonies allowed VH to reach both hard rock and pop audiences. Without him, they're not the same band, imho
@DarthKazi Agreed. He's almost invisible on some of their earlier records and is a very generic player. No distinctive style, melody lines or rhythm patters. MA's secret weapons and the main reasons he lasted so long in the band are his vocal harmonies and personal temperament. He seems like a guy who knows his limitations and therefore stays out of the way until he's needed. And who could blame him? He's probably set for life financially, even though his creative input was minimal at best.

I'm really glad I got to see them on their last tour with Diamond Dave (in 2007). IT was great and they sounded fantastic. I have a feeling, thoguh, that this won't happen again. I tell ya, people like to bust on these guys (and just about any touring band over 50) for being "old" but I don't know many 50+ guys who are as whip thin as Ed or as energetic as Dave. Rather, the majority are slow, bald (i realize dave had hair transplants) and doughy (if not morbidly obese). They also didn't spend decades drinking, smoking and whatnot. Most of them seem like they peeked in high school and have been coasting on fumes ever since. I think this tour was a success

@fgtrdes Genetics. Wolf got his body type and metabolism from his mother, who has had a lifelong struggle with weight. Eddie and Alex on the other hand have always been naturally lean and muscular regardless of lifestyle (Ed lived on McDonald's in his early 20s). Ed's half Indonesian, if I'm recalling correctly. His mother was a tiny woman who was also very thin and muscular. The longer I live, the more I respect genetics. Ed's father developed oral cancer (same as Ed) and was a heavy smoker

Eddie Van Halen has influenced a generation of guitarists, in the same way as did Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix and Jimmy Page in their day. He is one of that rare breed - a ground breaker. And I must add - RIP Gary Moore.

Diamond Dave rules! He's the frontman that makes Van Halen alive again, fitting like a glove. Hagar was okay, really not bad at all, but Dave is colourful, having charisma, enjoying it, making martial art jumps and as a matter of fact, I love the way he sings and screams. That guy is ALIVE! Wolfgang is doing a tremendous job! Not many if you out there, who only seem to care about his weight, can say that you're playing bass with Van Halen, when you're 17-years young...

@kevinnotevan It isn't like it takes a damn virtuoso to ride the E and A strings on 8th notes, which is the primary duty of MA in the old days. Mikey did some tasty embellishments here and there, but we aren't talking about Victor Wooten kind of stuff. I'd wager to bet Wolfie can hang with best rock guys though, based on genes alone and the fact that he's been playing since he could hold a guitar. People need to shut it until the record comes out. ;)

@DarthKazi course mikey's bass solos are missed, i mean I never was able to witness them but to me they seemed intense and awesome. Wolfie is fine! I saw VH in 07 at the staples center, my first VH concert, and they blew me away, I had almost completely forgotten MA wasn't there. did you hear about MA saying that if VH asked Chickenfoot to open for them he'd do it? that would be super awkward but who cares! haha

@kevinnotevan Mike's just not a very melodic player. He added nothing to VH's rhythm section, which is why a 16 yr old could fill his shoes. Also bass and drum solos are relics from corporate stadium rock at it's most bloated and self indulgent (Spinal Tap). Mike's "solos" were little more than feedback and theatrics. That said, MA's backing vocal is key to VH's distinctive sound. His harmonies allowed VH to reach both hard rock and pop audiences. Without him, they're not the same band, imho

@DarthKazi Agreed. He's almost invisible on some of their earlier records and is a very generic player. No distinctive style, melody lines or rhythm patters. MA's secret weapons and the main reasons he lasted so long in the band are his vocal harmonies and personal temperament. He seems like a guy who knows his limitations and therefore stays out of the way until he's needed. And who could blame him? He's probably set for life financially, even though his creative input was minimal at best.

@ecoloqua Eddie didn't want him because he wanted to jam with his son, Anthony was actually supposed to be gone in 2004, but Sammy Hagar wouldnt perform without Anthony, so he was around for the 2004 tour, then once Hagar left, Eddie decided he didn't want Anthony, and Anthony wanted to be with Hagar (and still is). Now we have Wolfgang

@bandit7498 Nah my point is that the band seems to be playing to pre-recorded Michael Anthony bass and backing vocals. I hear muted 8th and I'm seeing flimsy pick strumming. MA talks of this in a recent interview too btw. He used to play to them...now it's the opposite. Shameful for a classic rock band I think. I read Ed didn't even have bass in his monitors before!!

I'm really glad I got to see them on their last tour with Diamond Dave (in 2007). IT was great and they sounded fantastic. I have a feeling, thoguh, that this won't happen again. Does anyone else feel that way? It seems as though Dave has gone into seclusion and Eddie's just enjoying life, which is great, but I think many of us were anticipating a new album with Dave. I really hope something happens....soon. Surely they've got one left! Come on, guys, give us a break.
