I get really sweet clean tones from the amp itself with the built-in reverb and chorus, however when I use my DS-1 for distortion, mild or heavy it has this disgusting low-watt practice amp sound, which is unusual to me, since this is a 65-watt amp. Would a pre-amp processor like a Boss GT-8 or Line 6 POD 2.0 help with the distortion sound/shaping?
PS should I run the output for guitar rig 4 from an interface into the amp's input?
OK...I'm a bit confused because you keep warning that I'll damage my amp if I play into it while the speaker is disconnected -- but isn't that exactly what you're doing in this video? I have a DeVille as well and I'm wondering if there's a way to use it as a preamp without potentially destroying it in the process. Maybe you could explain your signal path in a bit more detail? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Can you talk without saying "uhhh" every second? is it possible? and smacking your lips every sentence doesnt make you more intelligent or important. "and uh" "and uh" i cant think before i speak "uh" i... uh... uh... god shut the fuck up.
DUDE....what was the jazz/blues stuff u were playing with the guitar clean around 3:00 ... it sounds INCREDIBLE...im actually a big fan of guitar rig 4 myself :)
@DIYMusician m8 i m playing through pc shity speakers and headphones sometime.. My card is USB M-audio fast track ( not the pro ) that means its not worth to get monitor speakers? cause i dont have the pro and it destroys my quality?ty
What about plugging into the amp and using the SEND of your effects loop to the input of guitar rig? What tubes are you leaving out here? The power tubes?
I plug in a dummy (blank 1/4 inch adaptor) to the power amp in channel. This way, I dont have to keep on unplugging the speaker cables at the back. Anyone has experience using this method?
Interesting concept and a very good result but I am cautious about using my expensive tube amp for this purpose. Would my sound be improved by sending my guitar signal through a dedicated tube preamp? Currently I am going straight into my interface but I am thinking about buying a tube pre amp for vocal recording. If I could improve my GT3 sound with a tube preamp then all the better. Please advise mate.
The only only time there is any reason to be cautious is when playing through the amp whithout the speaker plugged in. And that I do not advise anymore. Otherwise there is no downside at all. Though running through a tube preamp would work better than just going direct into your interface going through your amp is your best bet for real guitar tones.
In a preamp you'll have 1 to MAYBE 3 preamp tubes, a normal guitar tube amp will have two POWER tubes and three preamp tubes in addition to all the circuitry the signal is running through. Why try to emulate the sound and feel of a guitar amp when you can just have it?
@DIYMusician Most preamps have 5 tubes. Even the MTS modules with 2 preamp tubes in the modules have 3 more in the actual box. Some have 7 like the Mark V
wont you blow up your amp if you unplug the speaker outs? I know that if you run a tube amp without a speaker you will blow your amp, but im not sure if a combo is different.
Thanks a lot for the post. I've done some research and you are right. The speaker acts as the load for the amp and without it you can fry the amp. You must keep the speaker connected to use this technique or have a power attenuator to act as a dummy load. Thanks again.
Question for you.
I have a 65 watt acoustic Laney amplifier.

Input/Gain = Preamp Gain
MasterVolume/Out = Power amp gain
Just turn the master down and crank the input to where you want and then you don't blow your amp
Won't affect sound at all and isn't a compromise.
