What the movie doesn't mention is that grizzlies also will eat their own cubs when they are starving. The fact that the adult bear protected the cub at all here is surprising.

@markus777 Wow... Male bears will eat cubs if they are Starving. Female bears are highly defensive of their cubs till they are 3 or 5 years old and protect them from Male Bears.. You make it sound like their own mothers eat them rather then go find food and never protect them at all.
