Great video!!!! I have a question though, do you ever have a problem with the fiber felting? I tried dyeing fiber in the microwave a few times and felting of the fiber was a real problem
Hey, another awesome video - I've been wishing there was a cheaper alternative to buying dyed rovings from other fibre artists but just didn't feel confident enough to give it a go. Well, thanks to your video I'm off to get some dyes when i get home from my holidays and watch out garage - there will be dye!
you can use sugar free koolaide and food dyes as a cheap and very effective alternative...a slosh of vinegar and a teaspoon of salt aid take up and setting and a little heat....thats it! its food safe too......not separate pots needed...
What type of dye is that anyways? I wanted to learn with easter egg dyes and your video was the most interesting...but what would you have to change if I wanted to use easter egg dyes? Any site suggestions to find written directions?
Do you ever have trouble with the dye getting to the bottom of the roving and creating a muck color?
LOL, wow I completely forgot to mention the dye type. I use Jacquard Acid Dyes.
Yes you can, but the colors will not be as bright.
Nope, never had mucky bottoms. Once you wring out your roving, it soaks the dye right up. Setting it with steam is what makes it permanent.
Best thing I could offer would be to do a google search. I'm sure there are plenty of written instructions out there, in fact I know there is but I have long since forgotten where I saw them.
Thank you so much for this great video.. I have never dyed yarn but so want to! now I am going to do it :) I have so many ideas flying around in my head for colors right now its crazy.. thank you so much. Could you make another dying video of how to make strips in the yarn for socks. ;)
Nope, Soda Ash is used for dying cotton because it is not a protein fiber. If you've ever tied-died a cotton shirt, you would have used soda ash water to pre-soak your shirt before applying a different type of dye.
Great video, thanks Rexene - reminded me of the things I'd forgotten and done wrong in my dyeing batch earlier today LOL. Next time I'll remember to prewet my fleece, although colours have turned out ok in spite of me. Personally, I have turquoise fingers today :)
The dye won't take as evenly as you would if it had been soaked a little. I have tried them there Dylons, but they don't work very well. I know the powders are a little pricey, but in the end it is so worth it. Don't skimp & sabotage yourself! You may also want to consider natural dyes. Walnuts are so fun to dye with & they make beautiful browns.
Less vinegar means not as much of the dye will stick to the fiber. That is why I use so much. Using more will not hurt the fibers...using less will make dull colors.
Rexenne You are AWESOME. I have learned as a beginning spinnner from you and now im onto dying roving, you make it simple. Thank you so much for informative videos.
So I assume I can do this to my handspun ramboulette........I want to do speckles of girly colors.....lavendar, pink, robins egg and buttercup with some of the white yarn color remaining.
Your videos are informative and humorious.....Thanks
LOL yes! I did do some for a while but our apartment does not get vary good air flow with only one opening in the living area ( a patio door) so I had to give it up...for now.
this is great! Thanks for the info. Say, I've got some huge bottles of watercolor ink that I want to use to color some undyed yarn. I know that alot of the color will come out, but do you have any idea how long to cook the stuff or the best chemical to set the dye with?
This is, hands-down, the most informative video on dyeing roving online. I just recently started spinning on a drop spindle. I ordered a ton of dyes, white BFL Top and had no idea what in the hell I was supposed to do with everything LOL Good thing someone linked your video on Ravelry.
Girl - you are CRAZY! And I LOVE your vids! You've got a new fan. ;) I'll be dyeing some roving today and will follow what you've shown here. Thanks for the instruction. ~L
been dying for years, but not handpainting. your demo really helped simplfy the process. you also eased doubts re: my techinque. now it's time to break the goodies back out. BTW, I love your sense of humor...gal after my own style
Just a note that Acid Dyes aren't food colouring - you should take safety precautions when using them and be very careful with the dry powder - wear a mask, gloves and covering clothes, you don't want to breath it in.
I never anything, nor implied, anything of the sorts. I also never implied that you should open the jar and inhale the power. I am sure people have the forethought to read the jars themselves and take whichever precautions they feel they need to. There is no need to lecture the intelligent crafters.
Thanks so much for all the postive feedback! If anyone is unaware, I am doing a fundraiser to raise the funds to replace a RAM chip in my puter that is crappin out, making it impossible to edit video to upload to youtube. I have two more waiting to be edited! You can find my fundraiser page at rexenne. chipin. com/ new-1gig-ram-chip (take out spaces). I appriciate every little bit that helps! Thanks for your consideration and support!!
Dear Rexenne, thanks so much, See my fiber videos too! Where do you like to get your best quality of merino roving from? Any at good deals? Have you tried any superwash wool? Thanks so much, grace
I get my Merino roving from fatcatknits on Etsy (link is in credits). I think she has it at a reasonable price for Ecre. I have recieved some superwash wool from swaps, but I usually do not buy it because it costs more. I have only accidently felted my wool once, and that was when I was learning how to clean raw fleece. :)
You totally rock! I love your videos. When I got an e-mail saying that I had new subscription videos at You Tube, I was like, "What did I subscribe to?" Then I remembered. Then I was like, "Rexenne! Woot! More fiber excitement!"
WONDERFUL! I always look forward to your videos. They makes me want to do more with my knitting and yarn, and stretch my horizons. I think you're the BEST! :0)

one more question rexenne.
What would happen if yo dont pre soak your fiber before dyeing? And have you ever used DYLON DYES for roving?

Hey rexenne. i love your video. your awesome and make it look really simple. I cant wait to try this at home. One question,
how many ounces are the sketti jars and do i have to use as much vinegar as you did. what would happen If I use less vinegar?
ceereese 2 years ago

rexenne 2 years ago
I think they are the 20 ounzers, but the measurements are not exact. You can use any size jar, just adjust the amount of liquid & dye.
