I know his current acoustic pedalboard includes a Fuzz Factory, Fuzz Probe, and Lo-Fi Loop Junky. On Several Shades of Why, he used a custom Jim Roth Tonebender copy.
@DigitalDogParty I think he is using a couple of fuzz units chain-connected. I've always heard that he uses the big muff, and the superfuzz, but it doesn't sound like any of those. He is also using a pickup mounted on the hole. Those pickups adds more gain than the regular acoustic microphone.
Yes, I have this guitar and it's great, although I think you have to look for it on e-bay now, since they are currently not selling them anymore.
This is a Gibson CF-100E. As far as that distortion goes, I think that's probably a Big Muff. Years ago, in a Guitar Center magazine, in an interview, he said that he's really big into the Big Muff pedal.
Long live J Mascis and all those who enjoy him and the lives that he has touched! Beyond amazing.
This is one of the best songs ever. It's like a puzzle, you don't take the words at face value, it's gotta mean something else. And the chords are beautiful, like usual.

Hm. I have a Fuzz Factory, but I have no idea how to get that sound through acoustics. It sounds real shiny and light. Hm.
