When I first heard this song as done by the Dixie Hummingbirds on CKUA radio I was instantly blown away. Levon gives it a decidedly different vocal twist, but it is still great.
Definitely one to have playing on the day of your funeral if you are a believer.
when my brother passed away on labor day weekend he was listening to levon helm...i wonder if he was listening to this song.o dear god..what a bittersweet omen.does god speak to us through coincidences..love ya.from sis..ljumper
Hush you mouth superflous... Just kidding. If Leon were to fall over tomorrow he'd play hell out doing this one... He's emortal and still putting em out. BTW as of this post Leon turned 70
@xoTrinaxoMilfxo I DO believe in heaven.. Levon knows whats to come. Hes been bad, Ive been bad but....when it comes down to "forgiveness", we ALL have the chance . U just have to ask...
This is the shit, the background vocals rising like Mercury at just the right moments and the darker content elevated to celebration with effortless grace.
My 1st album I ever bought when I got my RCA stereo (this was 1967) for a Xmas present when I was 14....for some reason I took my $9 and bought Steppenwolf's 1st record and "Music From Big Pink"....weird that the picture called to me since I'd never heard of them.....what a ride (and mystery) since then.
This song makes all the boundaries between Gospel, Country, Soul, R&B fall apart. Levon Helm succeeds to unit all the greatness of American music in this song. Levon is a Treasure.
Loaded with meaning (espec..soulful) this fantastic explanation of understanding the reality ahead of us, is deserving of endless usage wherever meaning is required.
OMG. This is such a great tune!! I delivered pizzas last night and replayed this song for about 4 hours. I never had so much fun at work! PLAY THIS AT MY FUNERAL!! You were never better Levon!!
The Band, IMO, was the greatest band in the history of American rock n roll. No one else sounded like them. Levon's last two albums have been two of the greatest roots-music albums of the last four years.
Unfortunately, he had to quit singing again in '09, cos he began losing his voice again. Here's hoping he regains his voice sufficiently to make another record next year
Was this a Staple Singers song, originally? I will have to check. It was definitely a gospel song, it has that feel
The roots and spirit of Levon's music remind me of a towering old oak tree with its roots dug down into hard stony soil. the storms come and go but the oak tree still stands and it seems better wit each passing year.
Levon Helm is timeless. He's done so much it's hard to imagine. He was Sissy Spacek's daddy in "Coal Miner's Daughter", he was an old retired gunsmith in the Tennessee mountains in "The Shooter", he was Jesse James in a collaberation with Charlie Daniels, Johnny Cash and Emmylou Harris in the early 80s. What hasn't he done?
Please take a listen to his version of "The Golden Bird" and feel the sadness and remorse of a wanton act. Levon is a All-American voice. May he always be with us.
What a great album! got to get my hands on a hard copy someday soon. Hear the wisdom in the voice, and see it in the wrinkles on that sweet old face =D
what great song to take to jail with me when i start doing weekends next weekend ,,,thanks levon,,doing weekend s won,t be so bad with this song ,,,peace out
Although he went through the hell of cancer Levon ends up with a voice that sounds like it was seasoned to perfection in a whiskey barrel. He"s pretty much perfect on this song.
Name on this post is my friend's who passed away this month. I put together a photo show for his memorial tomorrown and this will be the background music. Thanks Levon!
Have given instuctions to have his played at my funeral/memorial! WONDERFUL!

This song was written by Levon Helm Band member Larry Campbell. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this.
