  • Power wasn't going to be able to get back in time to return the shot so he deliberately bumped into Nicol to try for the let.

  • Clearly A LET!

  • its a LET, nicol made no attempt to allow power unrestricted direct access to the ball... he stood there admiring his shot :D very poor judgement by the ref. on the plus side what a fantastic rally!!!

  • Comment removed

  • he got tired so instead of angling his run he just went in to him. Oldest trick in the book :) used it a few times myself

  • hahah what a fanny, chucked a little tantrum!

  • clearly... It's let...

  • bull shit it was a clear let wat are u talking about !!!! do u even no how to play squash to comment something use

    less??????

  • @akashcoolable Playing squash and knowing the rules are two different things.

    It was a NO LET.

  • it was a no let.

jonathan had missed the ball...he was caught off guard when peter attacked his cross court mid way....he bumped into nicol on purpose...to get a let. . we squash players do this all the time..

  • That particular female ref has always been crap, but that call could well have gone either way.

  • this entire game has bogus calls. the referees were trying to make it so they wouldnt call minimal interference lets, but they were a bit too strict at some points.

  • hmmm looked like a let to me

  • anyone got the final point of this match to upload??

  • No Let! That's my call!

  • I do not know what it is, but for some reason sports like Squash and Racquetball do not seem to be too popular compared to Football(Soccer), and Tennis.

I live in the USA and am a big fan of R-Ball but it's just too damn difficult to find courts and partners to play with. As someone said in one of the comments below, the local community needs to get free access to such courts if these games are to grow!!

  • thats not going to happen. squash courts are expensive and for this reason i dont believe it will ever become as popular as football. if it joins the olympics.. it will grow.

  • "Oh my God referee what are you doing?" One of the most classic lines from a commentator. Priceless.

  • Power vs. Nicol surpasses Agassi vs. Sampras.

  • Jonathan Power is the John McEnroe of squash. Complete artistry and passion.

  • This match between Power and Nicol seems to be quite incredible and intense. I want to see it completly, has anyone got the enire video?

  • I played a little squash many years ago. Basically, I am a tennis player. Do you think squash can get bigger than tennis say 10 years from now.

Also, how is the sport "racquets" different than "squash".

  • I don't think squash could become as wealthy as tennis, but I don't care, I play squash because I love it, its got more action, you have to think faster, be strategic etc. tennis has a slower pace and its much more expensive for people like me who are not members of a club. that sport you call ''racquets'' I asume its racquetball, wich is played inside a different court, with different racquets and a different ball wich bounces a lot more...I don't like ir either.

  • From my research on Wikipedia, "Racquets" is actually is the same shape as a squash ball but much harder. It was actually more dominant in the US 20 years ago, but is not played too much.

    Advantages of Tennis over Squash

    1) Is best played outdoors (I hate indoor tennis)

    2) Better on TV

    3) More international

    4) More variation in types of surfaces

    Advantages of squash over tennis

    1) Time spent collecting balls

    2) Faster workout

    3) More variety in shots

  • i think you missed the main advantage of squash over tennis, that being the movement. modern tennis they stay at the back of the court allmost all the time (personally i find that boring but thats my opinion)

  • Is squash played on different surfaces?, ie clay, hard and grass in tennis.

Can and is squash played outdoors.

Favorite tennis players are Pete Sampras and John McEnroe.

  • Last few questions/comments:

    1) Is Squash played exclusively with a Continental grip or is Eastern also used?

    2) Are shots hit exclusively with slice, or is topspin and flat also used?

You mentioned cost. Tennis can be a very cheap sport when played outdoors. I play on public courts with no cost whenever the weather allows it (hard courts). Indoor tennis is relatively expensive. I string all my racquets (break strings due to hitting topspin). I would say tennis is cheaper than squash.

  • Your body must be trained at an absolutely superb shape in order to play 20 + minute rallies like the professionals on the video here, you are constantly running in squash, theres no stoping to catch some air as in tennis where shots are slower, also the court maintenance in squash is quite simple, unlike in tennis. this debate could go on for ages, and I've never played tennis in my life so I don't have the two sides to the situation.

  • I think the one advantage tennis has over squash is that it is best played outdoors. If tennis was strictly played indoors, I would never play the game. My eyes struggle with the indoor lights. I love the intangibles of playing outdoors - like the wind, sun, heat, etc. Indoor tennis is sterile, and is also very loud. Because of the outdoor aspect, tennis does have an advantage over squash. Squash should focus on promoting the game thru outdoor squash.

  • I simply prefer squash because it requires more in all aspects except the economic one. also its independent from the weather wich is very convenient for me since I live in a cold rainy city.

I don't live in that country so I woudnt know for sure, I assumed it was just racquetball wich is played inside a larger court with another racquet and with a ball that bounces a lot.

  • tennis cheaper than squash?? never heard that one before. tennis memberships are about 3 times the price (where i live anyway). the rackets and balls are more expensive too. although iv never seen anyone smash up their racquet in tennis so its cheaper from that point of view!!!

  • What country are you from? As I mentioned to jdcontrol, in my hometown of Louisville, KY USA, tennis can be played outdoors from March thru November, with some mild winter days. Our winters can get very cold, so playing indoors is required. I hate indoor tennis, so this is why the interest in squash. But honestly, in my hometown, tennis is cheaper than squash since there are no public squash courts.

  • Colombia is my country. we do have public tennis courts but no public squash courts...a shame really, since our country is one of the better ones regarding squash in Latin America.

  • Tennis in my hometown of Louisville, KY USA does get expensive when you use a teaching pro. Generally, they charge $25 a half hour for one lesson. When you add all the teaching and training for a junior, the costs can really add up - into the thousands a year.

  • My squash coach charges the equivalent to $7.50 for an hour, playing at the university's court. I take lessons three times a week. the rest of the week I get to play for free at a friend's court, I just buy him a gatorade and we play for hours.

  • Manchester, England

  • Manchester sounds like a great town. Obviously famous for the football team. Is squash or tennis more popular?

In my hometown of Louisville, KY (hometown of Muhammad Ali and the Kentucky Derby), tennis is far more popular. It seems women, in particular, prefer tennis - especially doubles. If squash could move out of the "elite, rich" club environment and into outdoor public parks, the sport could get huge rather quickly. It does offer a more strenuous cardio workout than tennis.

  • That is the main problem with squash, that sort of 'elite' factor there is to it. public courts are mandatory for squash to grow, the problem is that some greedy people dont want it to grow...

  • I agree. It seems like outdoor squash courts can be built. Shouldn't be that complicated. Tennis courts have to be resurfaced around every 5 yrs. I am talking about hard courts. But your right, the "elite" factor needs to go away. Tennis got rid of that image back in the 1970's.

  • tennis is much more popular. the club i play at in a town called bolton (outskirts of manchester) the squash team is tiny. their having trouble keeping it going unfortunately.

  • I thought squash was huge in Britain. Look at all the great players like John White and Peter Nicol. Is squash considered an "elite" sport in Britain?

Squash is a great sport even if I do not play it. I played 20 yrs ago. Spending most of my time playing with my two sons. The ten year old is fast and has great hands. Unfortunately, he is very small. Still crossing my fingers when he will grow.

  • Squash is in deed huge in the UK and some European countries such as France, Holland, Spain etc. however it never gets close to tennis' popularity no matter where in the planet...you never see squash on television, or being talked about on the radio, its mainly on the internet where everything happens regarding squash.

  • it used to be big, but after the squash boom in the 80's its been losing popularity and now i its considered a bit geeky. its nothing but soccer these days

  • In squash, I know the basic grip is a Continental, both on backhand and forehand. But do you ever use an Eastern grip (ie the shake hands grip) to hit it flat or with topspin.

  • jdcontrol, tennis is free in my hometown if you play in the parks. In my hometown of Louisville, tennis can be played consistently outdoors from the beginning of March thru the end of Nov. However, there are days in Dec-Feb that are fairly mild in which you can play. I am sorry to deflate your thoughts, but tennis is very cheap in my hometown, unless you are playing indoors.

  • haha. does he mouth "fuck off" as he throws the raquet

  • No es let ni en sueños.... Power siempre se deja morir en el cuerpo del contrario por si suena la flauta y le pitan let.

  • Thats a let...Plain and simple

  • Certainly a 'let'.

  • i think it shud be a stroke to power cuz nicol made no attempt to get out of the way he jus stood there after the shot

  • Not a "stroke to Power", because the ball could only have been played as a boast or after it came off the backwall. Not a "no let" either because the ball wasn't dead in the back. It's a let because Nicol didn't provide a direct PATH for power to play the ball.

  • clear no LET - power got himself in that situation and nicol played a tight ball and dead lenght...simple

  • Power could have got that.

  • such a let. fail ref

  • dear god hes dead right thats a simple let. amazing gets though

  • looks like a let to me, though i wish Power had been more gentlemanly about it.

  • that was a let because nicol didn't clear power's path to the ball.

  • refereeing in squash is the worst of any sport in the world.

  • Yeah, it kind of is... what's needed is pro refs or former pro players to ref.

  • that was a let. i would give him it. still good playing from both players

  • haha fuck off on powers lips

  • nicol is one of the best retrievers the game has seen hands down. as for the let, i think the video quality makes it too hard for us tubers' to make a definite call. its a case of 'u had to be there to see it'. personally, i thought the ball was dead, and im a big power fan so no bias!

  • I have the match on DVD and the ball rolls out of the back corner, so no let, otherwise it was playable and again no bias as this was a fantastic match and Power won it in the end anyway, but other than this decision, the refereeing in this match was unbelievably hurrendous

  • Can't tell from the clip if the ball died ungettable in the back corner, but if it came up and was playable, that should have been a let at 1:10. Trust me, I am no Power fan.

  • I agree, it was let, everyone can see it.

  • i think he would get the ball if nicol wouldn't be in his way -> so i would give him a let

  • id have given a let but i can understand why they didnt, power would have played the balll if it hadnt died, he keeps going after contact wheras he shouldve stopped earlier.

  • In addition the striker of the ball must give the retreiver a clear path to the ball and Nicol did not clear.

  • That is a let all day, he was able to retrieve everything else during that point, why not that shot?

  • No let, Power saw the ball die in the corner just after contact (watch his face) and asked for an easy way out of loosing the point. Shot was a winner before he asked for a let. No let!

  • that's a let, has to be.

  • I dunno Power totally body-checking Nicol isn't going to gain him any sympathy from the judges. If the ball caught the nick he wasn't getting it back - presumably the judges saw something we can't because of resolution.

  • i love this vid. power is a little bitch, but he's amazing.

  • Let because he could of got to the ball if he had really tried

  • dnt u mean no let cauz he could of got the ball if it was a let thn nicol would have to serve again

  • why is jonathen power always angry, his like a little girl.

  • Why does everyone you know say you're a little bitch?

  • who thee fuck are u u stupid ass bitch.

  • ...era let...video stupendo!

  • I think it was no let. Because Jonathon was out of position because he played the previous shot in the middle of the court and was stuck in the top right. He created the interference by making the loose shot. Great retrievals by Peter but I think Jonathon eased up on the gas too much during the rally.

  • It was yes let. Dude you don't play high calibre squash, I can tell from your answer. Power could have got that... Nicol should have protested and gave him the let.

  • That's quite an assuming statement, I'm glad you know my level of play from one comment post. Wish I had your psychic ability.

I never said JP couldn't get the ball, but IMO it was created interference. If you do actually know the rules, you'd see that if you create your own interference, it's no let.

  • it's a simple let. he was going straight to the ball from his last get...hardly "created interference".

  • Power is allowed a clear and direct path to the ball. Nicol was in the way. Had Power been allowed to go stright through he could have got the ball.

I know your level of play from the way you read that situation.

  • I agree that power could have got that but you can't tell how someone players from how they read situations.

I know many good players who are absolutely rubbish at telling between a let and a stroke.

  • what match was this? super series which year?

  • Anyone got a clip from this match of 5th game, 14-14, set 1.....?

  • Definately a let

  • Hard to tell from that clip if the ball was gettable, or dead in the back corner. But if gettable, or the ref is unsure if gettable, the correct call is Let. Nicol did not make any attempt to clear, Power was moving directly to the ball in the back corner.

  • that sould have been a let, nicol thought he had a winner n didnt even move out the way

  • peterdoes, its not shabana and i think its a clear let

  • brutal call...how can the refs suck so badly in pro squash?

  • def no let, shabanna chose the wrong way around, its his own fault.

  • that was a let- he couldn't have made that volley

  • i thin that was the right call, there was definetley room to get that he just ran into him

  • that was a let

  • jp is too cool
