Now,You say that the village speaks Taiwanese and the lawyer is speaking mandarin, how come they understand each other so well then, is it normal for Taiwanese to know both languages?Also, are they speaking taiwanese in all the taiwanese dramas then, cause i always thought it was mandarin they spoke . my sister sounds similar, she's in china studying.

@meralys21 a lot of people in taiwan know both. i mean, most children grow up in households where their parents speak both taiwanese and mandarin. i'm taiwanese myself so i'm basing this off of my relatives. not all taiwanese dramas have spoken taiwanese in them but if you hear a language other than mandarin, it's most likely taiwanese.

and about your friend, maybe the people over there were speaking cantonese...?

@swimgrl626 thanks for the info. My sister is the one in CHina and she told me it is Mandarin what she's learning on the area she's at. I actually never noticed before a difference between the languages in the taiwanese dramas I've watched. To me it was always mandarin, even on this one they all sound the same language except for the way it is spoken by the town people. I just figured it was like in America we all speak english but different dialects depending on the part of the country .
