Great review, you give some really good points (the sudden shifts in control style needed to complete the game are something I hadn't really considered before). I must say though, I adore this game, and I love the edge-of-your-seat slippiness of the controls. When you finally have your strategy for the tougher levels down, my feeling of satisfaction on completing them is duly increased. Challenging, but not overbearingly so. Still one of my most frequently played SMS titles.
galera'm from Brazil, has zeroed wonder boy, the game and very good, but very digio controls are slippery, you have to be very abildade able to finish it ... well that's my opinion, the master system and a thousand times better
galera sou do brasil, ja zerei wonder boy, o jogo e muito bom, porem muito digio os controles sao escorregadios, tem que ter muita abildade para conseguir termina-lo...bom essa e minha opiniao, o do master system e mil vezes melhor
You might be interested to know that Hudson basically stole the game. It wasn't really a shake hands and agree deal, they pretty much underhanded sega to make Adventure Island, but it wasn't 'illegal' per se.
Great review, i have new adventure island on the turbo grafx, and it is so hard in places, especially when enemies come at you from behind. The wonder boy/adventure island series ran for quite a while.
Although the trial & error is extreme and the control is somewhat more slippery than in smb, the collecting of hidden dolls to unlock the real final levels was a unique touch and when you do memorize the levels it feels awesome to speed through them on the skateboard because, most of the time, the game has a great flow to it. smb is very much the same, only a lot less frustrating to master.
I'd love to see a review of the third game, Dragon's Trap. It's one of the most loved games in the series and yet i haven't seen any reviews on youtube.
ET was not a classic. Just a games old doesnt make it a classic. Wonder boy is a great gaem heralded by the community. James you have no idea what your talking about.
This was my very first video game i ever played on my own console (I was about 6 or 7 years old *g* ). So I just love it and just downloaded it for the Virtual Console. It's a bit hard, but I completed it several times and I just like it like at the first run :-)
You are wrong only on one thing that Adventure island was more know or famous than WB. That is probably becouse you never went to an Arcade place [maybe you were too young just like me]. This was one of the most famouse Arcade games back then my Brother and his friends played it there alongside with ghouls n ghosts and several other games which were released to home consoles later. This game was good & hard but too repetetive. Back then 9/10 today 3/10 overall list 4/10.
Cyrus your from Germany. Wonder Boy was an awesome game, but it did flop worldwide. Sega was bug in Europe and Brazil so Wonderboy did good there, but not the rest of the world.
I think you misunderstood. While on the SMS it was a big hit but SMS didn`t had a large number of Good Games. But overall compared to NES Games it was not that much since the NES came way earlier and had a largeer nr of released Games. Nevertheless This game was a Big Arcade hit back then . Back then People loved to play Arcades and spend their money there today Arcade Games are just not worth it since most games are released in the same quality or even better for the consoles.
Not worldwide. I loved to go to the arcade when I was a kid, and we had them everywhere. Never saw a wonderboy arcade here in the states though. IM sure there were some, but capcom, and Neo geo were kings, all sega had here was racing games, and golden axe.
Not slippery at all unless your on ice. The NES version was pretty slippery though. It is hard as hell to avoid rocks on the NES. On master system you can stop on a dime. Though the NES version had alot more to it, and was more memorable.
@neverchris It is slippery yes, but I find the controls are way tighter then in Adventure Island. I can barely get half way through AI, and I grew up playing it. I just got Wonder Boy a few months ago, and I beat it on day one.

WonderBoy1 has always been a bit crappy - and not that popular, really.
The sequels were far better. Try WonderBoyIII. Now... that's a great game, and a lot better in every way.

Does it control like Mario Bros.(Not Super Mario Bros.) where the controls where slippery.

Yeah, in a way it's a classic but I put a lot of effort into making sure that nostalgia doesn't determine my grade.

Whoa, a 4 out of 10 sounds pretty harsh. I still the game was at least passable.
