  • the reason there is a diesel behind steam locos is in case the steam loco breaks down

  • Mallard is in need of exactly the same treatment The Flying Scotsman got. A full complete stripdown & heavy overhaul, including a new boiler. The tubes now will be completely rotten sadly, and the cost to get Mallard running again will be in the millions

  • Flying Mallard and a Tornado look

  • Why is there always a diesel behind Tornados train or any steam loco on the main line?

  • @5786Dan Assuming they're expensive to actually repair (which might actually be a stupid comment for me to say because I think everyone assumes that D:) and that in the event of it having to stop it won't obstruct the mainline as the diesel can push it away in case.

  • @faggotcracked Thanks. Not ideal but it's the best option at the end of the day.

  • That is one heavy coach. It needs two engines and a diesel to haul it.

  • @ryanlim2002 mallard aint in steam!!! tornado is pulling it and the diesel wont be doing anywork its there so if tornado fails or something is wrong with mallard so they can still move the train out the way so they wont be blocking the main line!

  • @joshwellburn Chill. Twas just a joke lol.

  • now thats a sight to behold

  • Do you know where Mallard is now? Im sure I saw her by a storage shed yesterday somewhere between Slough and London?

  • @63lozzy You probably saw Dominion of New Zealand - have a look at my other video "steam and fire"

  • I just don't understand why they just don't fire up Mallard and steam it over there?!

  • @fudgebaker Well, Mallard hasn't steamed in 20 or 30 years, so making it steamable just for this occasion would be very uneconomical. The last time Mallard was steaming, it didn't even generate enough revenue to justify its renovation, same with Green Arrow unfortunately :(

  • @fudgebaker It doesn't have it's main siderods on it. And it hasn't been in steam for around thirty years. As said by 59n1tr0n72, it would be very uneconomical and unsafe.

  • @crazyracer12 The siderods have only been removed for transit. They'll be either in the can or the Support coach. Any steam locomotive (or diesel shunter) will have it's motion removed if Dead In Tow.

  • My Favourite loco inside shildon is 4771 Green Arrow.

Good to see 4468 Mallard out on the tracks! Fantastic Loco!

  • @d60163 ok
