  • The Replacements, greatest band of the 80's.

I like REM and all but I consider The Replacements to be the godfathers of alternative/indie-rock

  • Smashing Pumpkins > Everything

  • HANDS ALL OVER THE WESTERN CULTURE

  • Hair bands are good laugh..but what ever said and done, Van Halen will remain as one of the best bands of all time..as much as I hate David Lee Roth, he was the best front man they ever had...

  • arrghhhh whats the song 2.26 to 2.44

please. something i've been listening to but cant put my finger on ... sonic youth maybe?

  • @fatchino Hypserstation

  • arrghhhh whats the song 2.26 to 2.44

please. something i've been listening to but cant put my finger on ...

  • the replacements dont get enough respect all.

  • Hyperstation!

  • Michael Stipe looks odd with hair!

  • did anyone else get goosebumps @ 2:56

  • How does this not make you want to start a band?

  • I liked the Damned at the beginning

  • Whats that song at the beginning with the shots of Seattle and the guy on the radio "This is the rock sound of seattle"

Please anyone? That feedback and shit sounds amazing

  • 'mats are the best

  • Nothing really has changed in the past 20 years. Instead of hair metal, it's auto tune, poppy, "the world is A-okay let's have butt sex with hos and go out clubbin' gettin' ripped and having more butt sex with more hos" type "music" that's grabbing the chart today. My question is where the fuck are our revolutionaries? Our generation Y? Where's that scene? Come on something has to give eventually.

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1 Way to stick with your instincts, man. Better choices as far as I'm concerned.

  • where's the mats

  • @Eltroim 5:08 Here Comes the Regular off of Tim

  • What's the name of the song in the intro. I like it :)

  • @FearThisChannel its 'in a jar' by dinosaur jr.

  • @ILICKdogs Are you sure? I listened to it but it doesn't really sound like it.

  • @FearThisChannel oops i was thinking about the song after that, sorry. its new rose by the damned.

  • @FearThisChannel New Rose

  • What? What happened to Dennis Hopper nararating this?!

  • What happened to Dennis Hopper narrating?!! What the FUck!!!

  • Respect to BBC.

  • The song you hear at 5:40 is from the Minutemen

  • @ZalbNacho what's the name of the song please!!!

i've been trying to find but i can't, it's too difficult

i depend on you long live to rock!!!!

  • @themightycheff1 The name of the song is Cohesion

  • I actually like some of the hair bands (and Ted Nugent, and I know Henry loves them and Van Halen as well), but I could see why kids like Kurt and Krist couldn't relate to them, because they were the complete opposite of hair bands. Pretty good doc, but the rest of Seattle doesn't get enough of a mention here, they act like Soundgarden and AIC were footnotes. Is there an American Indie doc. out there that represents everything that was going on?

  • where the fuck was radiohead on this series? they weren't on alternative OR british indie! Bullshit.

  • Stone Roses were more better than Nirvana...later, Oasis too

  • I love Nirvana, and all.. but they REALLY needed more Pearl Jam, and add Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Alice in Chains, Malfunkshun, and the other grunge bands..

  • THEbrick28. the song is trilogy (the wonder-hyperstation-eliminator jr.) by sonic youth. it's on the daydream nation album

  • yea thanx....awesome

  • They forgot Falco!

  • you rock pretty much a lot for putting this up. I appreciate it

  • does anyone know the song at 2:23 to 2:44??

  • modest mouse??

  • a person can work up a mean mean thirst, after a hard day of nothing much at all.

  • thanks for posting!

  • LOL they forgot nu metal cause its easy to forget

  • As enjoyable as I have found this series one major disappointing theme continues throughout each episode as i watch every week - why is it apparently Rock only happened in America and Britain? Now I'm sorry but so much was going on in the rest of the world in countries like Germany / Australia / Canada etc that had a huge impact of Rock guess it was hard to fit everything in?

  • I think its because so many bands of those countries that were big, usually left their home country to become famous.

  • @MDFMKisKMFDM yea, maybe bcuz this was made in america?

  • btw kurt cobain was murderd not sucide, 1 he had enough herion to kill a horse, so how could he grab the shot gun and kill him self? 2 the finger prints where wiped clean of the gun, plus the writein on the paper wasnt his writing

  • u forgot NU metal but your preety right though, how cum they did'nt talk about slipknot? btw punk rock, heavy metal, alternative rock, rock 4 life!

  • Motley Crue kicked ass. 80s get a bad rap

There was more then Hair Metal

There was New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Thrash Metal, there was great experinentation and development of Death Metal along with other forms of Extreme Metal

I wasnt even born at that time, and I relate to that musical era better then any other

The youth of America in the 80s were already rebelling with Slayer and Judas Priest before Kurt came out

  • in the 80s american youth rebel out with hardcore punk

  • Not according to Twisted Sister videos

  • Hi someone noes what song is the one beetween

    5:38 and 6:06 minute?

  • @daniel93daniel Cohesion by The Minutemen

  • ah man, david fricke is on the completely opposite end of that shmoozer charles cross, go dave!

  • Ya know where they talk about the age of people no-one gives a shit about.. Its right at 5 minutes... Well the guy you guys so happen to show is my father and i think its fucked up you guys wanna talk shit bout someone who has a family that does care about him so maybe you shouldnt just video people when there not knowing your filming them

  • Don't be dense, he was refering to honest people feeling alienated, that has nothing to do with family, he was reffering to government and society. If anything your father was potrayed as a working class hero.

  • why does the narrater have an english accent, on the version i saw on tv he was Dennis Hopper.

  • it was originally aired in England first

  • crap doc.

...they turned the 90s into a soap opera.

where are radiohead, pavement, beck, nin, etc etc

  • The next part of this SERIES of documentaries talks about Raidohead (response to fdopcs)

  • SY! or the 'Mats!

  • yeah rest in peace kurt

  • Im sorry but REM were vastly superior songwriters to Nirvana yet because of Kurt Cobains death they still have widespread commercial appeal. From Murmur to Document REMs mesmorising guitar sound is still not gettting enough credit to this day.

  • are you saying nirvana didnt have widespread commercial appeal before kurt died? haha, how old are you? seriously, nirvana were HUGE before kurts death, absolutely HUGE one of the biggest bands of all time, ever, thats not even opinion. even if i didnt like them i wud admit that. kurts key was his voice, emotion and aggression while REM were focused on the more standard melody and lyric

  • i liked the book heavier then heaven, but im sick of seein charles cross in everything when it comes to nirvana and kurt!

  • to me the 80's was the best AND worst decade for music, which this past of the documentary shows

  • God, I hated those hair bands in the 1980's. They were almost like cartoon characters to me. They didn't reflect anything about life as far as I could see it. In my house, my brothers were into that kind of music. Me, I was a fan of REM, Husker Du and The Replacements. You can imagine what THAT house must have been like.

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1 I know how you feel, nowadays i listen to alt music, such as Black Keys, Nirvana, Silversun Pickups, stuff like that my bro on the other hand listens to really-really bad pop music makes me wanna puke. I almost did once.

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1 feel ya man! i also listen to undeground indie music and hardcore while my sister listens to like realy crapy pop bands.

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1 im sorry but hair bands produce one of the most touching and powerful ballads , listen to steelheart's she's gone , still loving you by scorpions , every rose has its thorn by poison , amanda by boston .......etc , they'll make the hair's of the back of ur neck stand . i love alternative rock too but hair bands were also gd :)

  • @soulbirds Power ballads are the worst, sappy, hypocritical shit i've ever heard.

  • @aqweaqweaqweaqweaqwe maybe they're not ur thing , but each genre has its ppl and has its meaning to someone . alternative rock to me is philosophy and how u look into things from a different perspective . ballads r more associated with feelings ppl go through or experience

  • When this documentary series came to America, they cut so much out of it and had Dennis Hopper narrating it. It was awful. Now, watching the original BBC version, I can see how good the series really is.

  • Great doc, but it needed more Pixies and Sonic Youth!

  • While I understand that the BBC only had so much time to talk about this, they could have diversified better than this. They focused on like, 3 bands: R.E.M., Black Flag, and Nirvana.

I'm not even going to bother list what bands should've been mentioned. The Pixies should have had more recognition.

And screw Dave Grohl. I bet Kurt is spinning in his grave now that his good buddy became the very thing he despised: a corporate careerist.

  • Definately agree with you about the Pixies.

  • so your logic is, kurt would be pissed at dave for pursuing a career after nirvana, which happend to become successful?

  • No. Kurt would have been pissed that the same friend who moaned and groaned that Nevermind was "overproduced" and "too polished" would later go on to make some of the most polished and radio-ready rock of the last 10 years.

Success isn't the issue here; it's how that success was gained. Grohl abandoned his roots and now makes methodically uninteresting and calculated post-grunge nonsense.

  • VERY VERY VERY TRUE....

  • honestly u can blame dave for the success he became...im not a nirvana fan but i respect their music and what they brought to music....dave has taken a complete 180 maybe because he doesn't want to "touch" Kurt's stuff....sort of like how Metallica didn't play ORIOn completely until the 20 year anniversary of the realease of MoP...they dont wanna touch cliff's stuff as Dave doesn't wanna touch Kurt's stuff or anything near it...

  • That's bull. If respect were really the issue here then Dave wouldn't be making mind numbing MTV filler rock that Kurt would've rejected in a hot second.

And just what did FF bring to music anyway? Tired dynamics? Predicable chords? Anthemic sing alongs? Not only were they not the first band to do those things, but the fact that they're STILL doing them just makes FF that much more retarded.

  • whatever dude, maybe if you liked nirvana youd get it

  • I do like Nirvana. Not the multi-platinum Nevermind band you consider Nirvana. I like the Nirvana that got drunk with Sonic Youth, mocked Top of the Pops, and screwed with MTV.

That's why I get it better than most.

  • @kyotokombat

"That's why I get it better than most."

My vote for douche bag statement of the year.

"I've seen it all. I was here first." Guess you weren't paying attention while you listened to the "real" Nirvana.

  • @kyotokombat You are so special.

  • does anybody but me think rem sucks. i mean their music just sounds so gay and corny

  • This narrator dude sure likes to make out as if people from generation X came from Ethiopia and struggled to find food and water.

  • I think I must really love alternative rock, or just the two main bands here, because there are moments of this video series I can watch over and over and get the hair on the back of my head going up.

Like then Kurt does that jump, and the guys goes, in Kurt Cobain, Nirvana had a unique artist who gave a voice to a generation.

And also when Dave goes at the end, 'If I could change anything, I'd wish that Kurt was still alive.'

  • can someone get it into my head........i respect COBAIN and his music and influence....BUT i just dnt like NIRVANA.....i have a problem block.....dnt that make me a retard..or a douche....i bleed THRASH maybe thats y....

  • BLACK FLAG!

  • u had me till u went redneck on us

  • u dont have to be a redneck to recognize that. any educated person could see that

  • true

  • They really should've extended this to feature influential bands like Pavement, more Husker Du, Radiohead, they hardly even mentioned The Smashing Pumpkins.

  • that's true, maybe even other good bands from seattle or the meat puppets and stuff like that...and more punk bands.

  • Well at least they mentioned my favorite band....Black Flag

  • i was sure theyd do pavement

  • Id like them to release this on dvd, it was a good series

  • I know I'd buy it and wear it out so fast.

  • Alternative owns

  • i swear the t in Krist is meana be silent

  • It's short for Kristjan or Kristijan, the croatian version for Christopher or Chris. So yeah, I agree it's meant to silent, don't know why he kept it.

  • he changes it all the time

  • Perfer the VH1 showing of this with Dennis Hopper.

  • what does politics have to do with it?

  • i thought this series was ok... got a bit over-sentimental at times as these kinds of things always do... but it did cover the most important and definitive bands in a correlated and chronological way. and with some good interviews ect. i'm quite grateful for stuff like this.

  • wat was that one song at 1:00 ?

  • smells like teen spirit-Nirvana

  • kk thanks =D

  • Please someone tell me the name of the song begining at 4:57

  • Here Comes A Regular by The Replacements

  • indeed. I was shocked how they did not mention My Bloody Valentine at all on the british indie episode. Let alone the whole shoegaze movement

  • well at least they mentioned the flag...

  • their will always be great underground bands, the 80s will always be the greatest time for alternative rock

  • studio polished rock.... omg this show sucks a dick. they love every band they focus on.

motley crue wasnt a dick suck band. poison were

  • i was just fucking watching this like 10 mins ago!!!!

  • if you noticed o nthe punk episode, they belive punk died in 1979.

point is, this is from a mainstream british point of view

def not from the american underground eyes.

Kurt even admits his band just uses the sounds of husker du, dinosaur jr, mudhoney, black flag, sonic youth, minutemen etc.

  • yes Nirvana didn't invent the grunge genre, but they made it go popular. I mean yeah Bon Jovi didn't create the hair metal, but it's still a good band, the same for Metallica or Led Zeppelin. Whatever. It's not about who did invent the music, it's who made good music.

  • Grunge was just applied to punk-inspired bands of seattle by the mainstream.

some of the greatest bands are earth never went onto MTV, infact, its mroe likely a band like Husker Du is more well rembered than the #1 bands of there days.

Point is, fuck the mainstream. Underground music will. Kurt kept saying he hated how people though he was an alt rock god, and the whole point of In Utero was to isolate fans who were into the more mainstream sound of "nevermind"

  • This is so true

  • I get it: Nirvana was an important part of the alternative scene. But come on! The Replacements, Husker Du, The Minutemen, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Gun Club, Melvins, etc. Where were THEY? "Let It Be" and "Zen Arcade" influenced more bands than we can count, and yet this segment of the documentary would make you think they'd never even been recorded!

Not minimizing Kurt's/Nirvana's importance but they did NOT invent the genre. Lots of great bands came before :/

  • yeah also, it annoyed me they played some of trilogy the wonder by sonic youth, used footage of nirvana from the documentary that sonic youth filmed and were in (91 year punk broke) and they dont even show sonic youth one of the best and most influential alt bands ever.

  • @xxlesslikeitsmathxx Hey dude, yoo obviously didn't watch part 2? They mention all those bands in there

  • 5.18 how old was Kurt?

  • 27 I think

  • where was the Minneapolis scene in the 80's before Seattle ???

The Replacements were mentionned, but no Husker Du ??? what is that...

  • Husker Du and Pixies are fuckin the best

  • Husker Du are mentioned but only briefly.

  • Whats the song called at the beginning? The one during the opening credits?

  • New Rose by the Damned

  • to thatrottenzombie thats grunge this is overall alternative rock and as far as that goes nirvana is the best and by far the most influential and pearl jam nor stp had any where near the influence or impact

  • Kurt Who??

  • this segment focused way too much on Nirvana and and REM and shouldve talked about pearl jam and STP a little bit more

  • I'm suprised they didn't focus completely on Nirvana. I like Nirvana, but they are way too over hyped. They usualy just talk about Kurt Cobain and Nevermind. They should talk more about Bleach and their early years. Besides they're other bands that deserve more than a mention: Mudhoney, Blood Circus, Tad, Skin Yard, Dickless, Green River ( the true first grunge band), and others. Check out the Hype documentary if you want to hear more about grunge and less about Kurt Cobain and Nevermind.

  • i miss kurt..

  • fuck u Missbunglee liam gallagher is fuckin boss

  • liam gallagher is not a rock star at all!

  • I think british rock is much better than that of united states. and that the british accent is much better than the american

  • You got that right, and I am an American.

  • the accent is not the most important.

the really important is the will.

    kurt has that.

  • It sucks that Kurt's gone. I really think he was murdered too. Justice For Kurt

  • who sing on 5:05 minute????

what is the name of that song??

  • The Replacements - Here Comes a Regular

  • i Dont agree much, he had plnety of tours 89 94 so they jusd didnt coicidice, and I dont know how drugadiecte he actuaky was more than the cliche abitu it, psibly murdered whwen treaveling to stipe, Croos sunjevtive´biographer, cool fotage of CObain 86´, I dont thkin he even cared´about shcool so his inventing ther, liek typycal on him justyfitn the su´posed suicidde, seein novo now and then kurt back then its frersingepxerince

  • kurt is god.

  • the last great rock star no way, ignorant america what about pete doherty, liam gallagher

  • are they relly great ??

doherty is a copy of Sid vicious.

and liam is a copy of johnny rotten.

    i really like them though.

  • remember that for Americans, America is the world

those are the cunts that make "world cups"

in sports that are only played by American teams

  • I think that GNR should have appeared in the episode of rock of stadium and not just be mentioned

  • yeah , good question, What is the song @5:06

    anybody?

  • ??????????????

  • what's the song a 5:07 that says "after a hard day of nothing much at all"?

  • Here Comes a Regular by the Replacements

  • WTF!!!! no Pearl Jam??!!!

  • yes...check the next parts. patience please

  • motley crue suck balls. lmao.

  • Thanks for uploading this!

  • I'm getting sick of this shit. Either Nirvana is the worst band in the world, or the only band in the world. Is there no middle ground?

  • i like Nirvana, not on my top ten but i like em

  • yeah, Nirvana's one of my favorite bands, even though they're so good, they're also very overrated

  • the 90's were awesome

  • Don´t watch TV!!!

  • I remember that stupid Reagan commercial. I still liked those metal bands, but bands like Nirvana, REM and those indie bands brought something more to the table that I think will be remembered in the USA for a longtime.

  • whats the r.e.m song at about 4:10?

    <
