  • valentina according to you, is this the hardest chopin etude? many people say it is.. i just wanna know ur opinion. THX vanessa!!!!

  • beautiful hands <3

  • @bilibalala the point of the piece is that it's at an extremely fast metronome marking of half note=69

  • JHigland 1 ... to play with the speed and dexterity that Valentina plays with, watch her hands carefully. They never seems stressed, they are almost limp.

You must totally relax your hand. Try it. Your hand will feel like a wash cloth at first, but later, you should develop some sort of muscle memory. Don't force it and it will come. The descending minor scales in this etude are not easy. But if you learn them well, an entirely new world of advanced piano literature will be within reach.

  • In the original Edition there's A sharp, probbably an error. I believe the correct is "A" without any accident(02 min.)

  • this... just defies physics. i have never seen chords played like that on one hand, at that speed, ever. you glide across the keys, the piano is just there for you to dance on. kind of brings me to another dimension when i hear it.... *drifts off*

  • It looks like she hovers her right hand over the keys and just commands them to play.

  • A bit rushed in my opinion. This song should be enjoyed slowly.

  • does anyone have any tips for the descending g sharp minor scale in measures 11 and 13??

  • @JHighland1 But there is couple more things to think. Have your knuckles at the same line anywhere at the keys. Meaning pinky's knuckle is not at lower level than index finger's knuckle. See valentina's knuckles especially at 0:02. Also the best position for your hand doesn't always feel to be the best position. When right hand is playing descant the elbow is following the wrist, which u can see at 0:14. I hope u got something from this and you will be more aware of your body!

  • Holy first thing i see is fricken crazy runs

  • Brilliant!!!!

  • at 0:02- is it supposed to be an A flat or A sharp?

  • @EJLIU92 A Flat

  • Hi I'm also practising this song and I'm having trouble with the pedals. Mainly at he beginning. Can someone tell me or give me some tips about using the pedal??

  • @Esdess At the beginning of the piece, first measures, I put the pedal plainly on the G sharp and I lift it on JUST BEFORE (it's important since it's not indicated on the sheet) the F double Sharp and then I put it back on the G sharp of the next cell. I do the same with each cell on the left hand. On the descending chords (left hand), change it every time you change harmony (half pedals may be used too). don't listen to those who tell you not to work with the pedal. it's absurd.

  • can someone tell me what fingering does she use in the beginning?

  • @pinkstrawberrymuffin haha that's what I"ve been wondering as well

  • @pinkstrawberrymuffin she first uses 1,3 and 2,5 and then 1,3; 2,4; 1,3; 2,5 for the up and down. i've observed a lot of times for that!!!

  • your hands fuckin hurt cuz you a noob

  • Your technique improves the more you play it though so it's worth the time it takes.

  • I am doing this piece for 3 hours a day until I get it perfect.

  • She needs to take on Nancarrow........

  • OMG! valentina lisitsa is that you who typed chinese 肖邦24首练习曲 in the title? thank you so much for your typing my language!! i really appreciate!

  • OMG! valentina lisitsa is that you who typed chinese 肖邦24首练习曲 in the title? thank you so much for your typing my language!! i really appreciate!

  • Where is left hand?

  • @volodya2

    Where are the thirds? :)

  • @volodya2

    Where are the thirds? :)

  • @pupulique - notice double thirds (thirds in each hand) 0.40 - 0.43 or is she playing the thirds too fast for you to notice them all the way through?

  • extremely polished!

  • This woman rocks my world!

  • arm stroke is all important....you are correct

  • i want you all to focus on the position of her arms, that's obviously the secret of her success in piano. my teacher, in america (sob, incompetents!) whom I paid 50$ per lesson, wanted me to move my wrist at everything I did. But the 'american' wrist overmovement is just for scene, it ruined me...incompetents incompetent americans!!

  • Thalberg once said something like they used to teach their pupils on making the less move they could with their wrists. From that soberty would born their technique.

He was on truth. Actually i laugh from people making crazy movements or strange eye whiping...That's Not funny but useless

  • My hands hurt from just watching this video

  • Thank you very much, Valentina, for brining Chopin back to me. When Valentina plays Chopin, she transmits her feelings about Chopin to the listener. When you play a difficult Etude, such as Opus 25 # 10, 11, and 12, I can feel your intensity and love for Chopin. Keep up the excellent work!! I hope to hear you in person, someday.

  • o_o it doesn't even seem like she's hitting the keys. If I tried playing that lightly on my old piano, no sound would come out >.>

    Bravo Lisitsa! *claps*

  • oh my got! i want to

    play like her

  • superjam18...I can see that you have no idea of what you are saying...playing isn't onely about the notes...it's about feeling the music!

And to play this like Valentina plays it,it takes hard work! And you can't play it like this if you practice just one week!

  • stupendo 0:00 - 1:37 XDXD

  • I bet it only takes her 1 week to learn these.

  • on my piano is so hard to play something fast because the claviatura is pooshing very hard but here i fill the light of pooshing

  • ha una tecnica mostruosa....e bravissimaaaaaaaaaa

  • Riesco a fare le prime due terze...poi boh.

  • This is the most demanding of Chopin Etudes.

    Next comes Op.10 No.1..

    Valentina plays veeeery good...!!

  • mi chiedo ancora come diamine si faccia a raggiungere una tale perfezione...

  • concentrazione, tanto di esercizio e disciplina.

  • Eu assistiria mil vezes vc tocando sem enjoar!!!

    Por Deus... é apaixonante!!!

  • My favorite etude is op 10 n 12 but this etude here is my favorite Valentina etude!!! this piece is exceedingly difficult and she makes it look like the C-minor scale! What amazing skill!!! How come I haven't heard of Valentina before? By the way, the youtube refresh rate on the video is way too slow for us to be able to appreciate the true genius of the performer.

  • It takes a true freak of nature to play pieces this challenging with such effortless ease.

It can't be TAUGHT and it can't be LEARNED. Either you have it or you don't --- Alas!

  • You shouldn't make out that it's impossible. I couldn't play this piece when I started and it's gradually getting faster.

  • That 'effortless ease' of course comes with a lot of difficult practice

Still, she is clearly immensely talented

  • I definitely can be taught and learned. Sure, maybe if you don't have fingers or something.

  • anything can be taught. anything can be learned.

  • "thirds" is really difficult

  • I adore your interpretation of this, your hands are so fluid! (As said a million times)

I find it really difficult to play the trills and getting the thirds up to speed.

Really lovely performance. (I just wish the very beginning and end were in the clip! Hehe)

  • In Chopin the bass is as important as the treble. Almost ALL pianists neglect the bass (not only in Chopin). The wonderful dotted quarter/eighth note melody in the bass of this Etude is sadly smokescreened out of hearing by the treble.

  • My teacher says this is a left hand etude and the right hand is just filler.

  • yo teacher's wrong

  • Have you seen the right hand?

Well she is right in a way. The melody is in the left, but the study is for the technique in the right hand.

  • you may need a new teacher

  • Yes it is, but the right hand is still immensely important. Take away the right hand and see how it sounds like. No where near to how it sounds with the right hand. The notes that the right hand plays fills in the gaps left by the left hand.

  • her fingers aren't flying it's probably more due to the lightness of the keyboard

but daym those are long fingers

  • She does this one so seemingly effortless that it almost looks like its fake...... fantastic!

  • it feels like her fingers are flying and they are so light

  • the make it look so simple. really impressed!!

  • ovkenike -- Wrong, her talent is God-given!

  • OH MY GOD WOW

  • Wow, you look like an angel but you must have sold your soul to the devil for this kind of talent!

  • @ovkenike or her wings :)

  • 0_0

  • thats what i said

  • Marvelous!!! A total enjoyment to hear !!!! Never had I heard this piece played so delightfully until this video. She made me totally relaxed. I'm adding this video into my favorite folder.

Never mind that she emphasized the right hand, because the left hand melody is pretty iffy, nothing much tto the melody. Everything is about the right hand movement and its butterfly - like sounds.

  • I actually enjoyed the begining etude. It's lovely, fun, and a delight. I never heard anyone play this piece which gave me a smile till this youtube.

  • the right hand it's just more spectacular but the whole action is at the left hand:)

  • she won't get pinched in this vid she is wearing green..

  • you are just fabulous

  • Nice vid, but the cameraman didnt know that a pianist had a left hand

  • because this piece is focused on the right hand...

  • funny though...the melody is in the left hand

  • all of her etude videos are like this. They purposely only focus on the hand that can show off more. On etudes such as Op. 10 No. 4, it switches between hands to WOW the viewers on the speed and accuracy. On this etude, since the hardest stuff is in the right hand, it focuses on that.

  • Where's the last chord?

  • omg she makes it look so... effortless.

    its magical.

  • she is so wooooow.maybe i can do that in 10 years to come.... and only maybe.

  • Wow so quick!!!!!

  • Bravo!

  • Adoro essa pianista! Na minha opinião a melhor interprete de Chopin. Apesar de achar que o Yundi Li tem mais técnica, a Valentina tem mais coração.

  • allucinante.

  • Ótimo!!

  • Jeez, wow! I'm not a big fan of her recordings, but this one is so fluid and awesome that I can't not like it!

  • she has a very strange posture. she kinda "stay away" from the keyboard and that's something my teacher always told me not to do 'cause you waste a lot of weight (like shoulder's or amrs') and the sound isn't good.. this rule can't be applied to her.

  • oh my god! is this reality!

  • umm, how? No tension i her right hand, no strain. It's like this piece is easy for her.

  • You do it with your arm, I have been playing it for a few weeks now and you can't rely on your fingers too much, there's a lot of arm work in it too.

  • +10

  • good sound!!!

  • 1st finger in right hand)) lol

is it transcription without 1st finger?

    very musical)!+5

  • this is enormously great.

what an effortless flow, chopin would love her...

  • How I wish I could play like her

  • this bösendorfer has beautyful character. as beautyful as the pianists

  • me as your new fan

  • She isn't an human!!

  • i agree

  • She is my favorite!!!

  • Just listening to her makes my wrist hurt in thirds. I wonder the pain I will feel if I practiced it.

  • Music like this makes me wonder if a frustrated student of Chopin did him in. (Judging by the difficulty of this piece, it's not impossible.) However, this etude is made lovely once again by Valentina Lisitsa.

  • This piece is hard to play, for me that is :-)

  • no...for ALL of us. funny thing though...Valentina isn't one of "us".

  • crazy

  • am i the only one who has a ridiculous amount of trouble with this etude? third trills are so hard for me! the hardest instance of them i've seen are in stravinsky's "trois mouvements de petrouchka," final movement. you have to trill 5-3 / 2-4 on your left hand! plus there are notes for your thumb too

  • Don't complain. You will learn that not everyone has what it takes to be pro.

  • i will be pro.someday.i want to major in piano and do any job that is about my piano.hope my dream come true.wish me luck.

  • put the work in and with the right approach you can archive anything that you believe you can.

  • this has to be the hardest etude for the right hand that chopin wrote because its played in thirds

  • the sixth etude is harder.and op.10/2 is not easier than the thirds.

  • op 10 no 2 is MUCH harder than this one

  • she plays op 10 n 2 veery well

  • ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS! although, I did think that the left hand in 1:00-1:06 should have been brought out more, is so beautiful

  • that looks insanely hard..playing two voices on one hand at that tempo

  • Valentina is YT's Queen !!

  • Effortless

  • I admire your technique.

  • Beyond belief how well, how musical, how completely she suffuses herself into (as well as plays) this piece.

  • Awesome!

  • AMAZING!

  • She is insanly talented!

  • This performance sort of reminds me of the Josef Lhevine recording.

  • No one on earth can play this etude better than Valentina, What a beauty to see her fingers with such ease slide on the piano keys!!!!!

  • Wonderful! Really wonderful!

  • It seems so easy for her!!!

  • Perfect! It seems so easy for her!

  • I would be hard pressed to find a better study in economy. A lot can be learned from watching this. You know, sometimes you just have to sit back, cross your arms, let out a sigh and say, "Well, there you go."

  • Valentina Lisitsa is an inspiration to me(and I'm sure to many others), and she looks so young for such amazing talent! She's just overwhelming, I wish I have the opportunity to see her live someday, I'll have a heart attack but I'll be happy to =)

  • brilliant! also listen to sergio tiempo's study on this :)

  • yea... but she does not play what Chopin has written... It's completely re-done... half easier!

  • Wow! You do not know anything at all!

  • I guess you refered to "effortless";-)

  • No, that is an answer to user Lezginka.

  • It's unbelieveable how fast and calm she's playing it.

  • wow!

    you're really

    talented.

    XD

  • can i please borrow your hands? :p

  • her fingers are so independent! i'm trying really hard to reach that state but i've got to practice harder and harder!!! thanks for posting this vid!

  • This is arguably Chopin's most fiendishly difficult etude and among the top 5 hardest pieces he ever wrote. I have been playing piano since I was 7, reaching Grade 10 conservatory, and I can barely play this etude at HALF-tempo, let alone full. You sort of have to learn how to prevent the different fingers of the right hand from influencing eachother. Good job, Valentina!

  • sheeeet, you must be something. What would you say were chopins most difficult pieces? Which conservatory u from?

  • I know enough about piano to know how beastly difficult this piece is (a study in "thirds"). She's got the fingers!

  • Hello, will u tell me please what a

"study in thirds" is, if u were so

kind?? I dont know much about this

stuff, so i really would appreciate

    your help in this...

    danyipod.

  • the power is not so much in her fingers as it is in her biochemistry. She has a stronger body/mind. Higher/purer hormone levels, strong internal organs/bones. If you can increase the integrity of your body, conserve and cultivate your internal energy, you will increase your bioelectrical output and consequently improving your technique. Good diet/exercise is a start.

  • .... or maybe she just has better genes and practices a lot.

  • Ah, come on. She just slept at a Holiday Inn Express the evening before she recorded this.

  • @R3venton You can practice all you want. Your born with talent and touch like she has. Amazing relaxed hands. I want to see her play the rach. It would probably sound amazing with those soft hands.

  • Okay, Doctor. Thanks for the diagnosis of her well-being and all that contributes to her ability to play the piano so well. She is absolutely amazing!

  • I don't think diet has anything to do with Piano technique.

  • The one possible way that diet might inhibit technique is overeating or obesity. Legend has it that Scarlatti grew so fat that he couldn't play the cross-handed leaps or passages as well, so his later sonatas don't have as many. Of course Ms. Lisitsa has no such issues!

  • I know, she is bony, you can see the bones poking out in her wrists.

  • Her hands are like butter!!!They just gently graze those keys...she makes it seem so effortless!!Very beautiful!!!Valentina You Go Girl!

  • Great!!!

  • can anyone give me a list of the world's best pianist? cuz this girl rocks! and i'm making sure that nobody would go beyond valentina!!!

  • Thank you for sharing with us. I admire your technique.

  • Please come to St. louis and give a concert

  • thats incredible! it seems to be so relaxed!

  • It's her finger strength, as opposed to using force from the wrist and forearm.

  • what a pianistic find! absolutely staggering.

  • Dear Friends,

Somebody pretending to be me goes around leaving nasty comments on YouTube. The impersonator's user name is VaIentinaLisitsa - the letter "L" is replaced by capital "i".

If you see this person's comments on other people pages - please let me know . I am trying to stop it and already complained to YouTube . This person is disgusting !!!

  • I had the same problem and now have my YouTube master controlling my music. YouTube folks don't do anything about these people.

  • I, for one, will; for Valentina!

  • Lovely, Valentina! Happy holidays to you, and keep up the fine work.

  • effortless technique

  • Hi Valentina, I've seen some of your videos and I love the way you play, you make everything seem so easy... I've been looking for your DVD but here in Colombia is not available still. Will you come to give us a Concert here? If you don't please tell us for put us in contact. thank you for Your

    music.

    Cristian García

  • Beautiful work, Valentina...I'm currently working on a transcription of Chopin Prelude 15 for vibraphone (4/5 voices), and am watching as many different pianists play it as I possibly can. Do you have a video of yourself performing it, or can you recommend one similar to your style and clarity. Would be a huge help...thx in advance!

  • bosendaurfers(sp?) are like that. my teacher has one and if you barely touch it you'd get about a mf.

  • it's Bösendorfer and yeah it's such a beautiful piano. I went to a piano store and was just absolutely blown away by the sound and feel of it.
